About Merigwen Kawakami
My husband came to Juneau as a foreign exchange student from Japan at the age of sixteen. He was the momentary envy of his classmates when during a school assembly it was announced that the country he would be going to was AMERICA. Envy turned to laughter when the state was announced. He wouldn't be going to California or New York but ALASKA. The perceived notion and disappointment of being sent to a frozen wasteland ended when his airplane landed and his love of fishing began. After marrying and living in Japan for several years, we decided to return to Juneau to be closer to family and fishing. My husband is a business consultant. I'm a former teacher who now works seasonally for the Alaska State Legislature. We have three children and a small dog, Mr. Tubbs.

Why Merigwen Kawakami chose North Douglas
When looking for a place to build our home we both wanted to have a view of something. This location offered not only a view of water and mountains but the Lemon Glacier, as well as beach front. In the summer we see a lot of rainbows and in winter the Northern Lights. Canadian geese and swans stop by as they migrate. Ducks and Bald Eagles are always about. On occasion bear, porcupine and deer wander through the yard.
What makes this Apartment unique
In addition to being in a quite location and having a beautiful view, fishing is only minutes away. King salmon fishing can be done off of the rocks at False Outer Point or in the stream at Fish Creek. Starting about mid-August Silver salmon can be caught right outside the front door and then grilled. A small boat is available if you care to row about during high tide. Hiking and the Alpine Zipline are available at nearby Eagle Crest, Juneau's winter time downhill and cross country ski resort. Or do a short hike on Outer Point Loop Trail or Rainforest trail. A twelve minute car ride to the south of Douglas Island puts you at Sandy Beach and the trails that wind through the ruins of the Treadwell gold mine. Or cross the Juneau-Douglas bridge and be in downtown Juneau in 10 minutes to shop, eat, visit museums, historic sites, ride the tram or hike Perseverance and the Mount Roberts Trails. The Mendenhall Glacier is about a 20 minute drive, as is Auke Bay.

Perfect location! Everything we needed for our quick 3 day trip!
This was our first time visiting Juneau and we planned this trip in a bit of a rush on a whim! It turned out that we picked the perfect place to stay! There wasn't anything that we needed aside from a couple of more days to relax! The apartment was very clean and comfortable. The apartment was cozy but felt very open and spacious for 3 guests. Our bed was very comfortable and our guest commented the same for the sofa bed. I always sleep a bit cold but this place was very well insulated and we never even touched the thermostat. Having a washer and dryer was great as well. On the downside I was not a fan of the stairs to the entry. They were quite steep for lugging suitcases and gear up and down. Not sure I would trade it if it meant that we would have to give up that view though! Everything else was dang near perfect! I would not hesitate to book with Meri again if we had just a few in our party.
I wasn't sure when I read that this place is on Douglas island what that would really mean for us getting around. As it turned out it was just far enough from downtown for us to not care that there were 3 cruise ships in the harbor! Crossing the bridge out of town and just a 5 minute drive and we were there, We chose to rent a car but realized that we could have probably Uber or taken a taxi just as easily. Overall great location! We hope to be back soon!
Thanks very much for sharing your home Merigwen. The view from your home was just like the pictures online. Just beautiful. Your home was very clean and provided all that was needed for our stay at your home. We ate some meals at your home and some meals at restaurants. This was a trip to spend time with our family that lives in Juneau so we were already familiar with the area. Our granddaughters enjoyed spending time with us at your home. My son and his work our just across the channel from your home. Yes we would stay in your home again. Thank you so much for providing a home away from home. Fun trip from Oklahoma, Nancy
This was a wonderful place to stay for our week long vacation in Juneau. The bed was comfortable. The place had everything we needed. We couldn't have picked a better spot to enjoy ourselves.
Simple, spotless unit with gracious, responsive owner
The unit has everything needed and all was impeccably clean. Shortly before our arrival I asked about public transportation options because our flight was arriving late and I was concerned about not making it to the car rental desk before it closed. The owner offered to come pick us up if we ended up being stranded. We ended up not needing it, but it was a most kind gesture. Also, during our stay there was a minor plumbing issue that happened late at night and the owner immediately responded and corrected the issue. Finally, we left a sweatshirt behind when we left. She notified us immediately and personally delivered it to us on our way back through the area on our way home. We would gladly stay here again if we are ever back in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Thanks for your review (and the Starbuck's card). Wish your sons the best at school.
A quiet retreat in the woods
Convenient to all locations on Douglas Island and Juneau. Sparely furnished, but with a lovely view. The bed and pillows were especially comfortable. Owners were friendly but not intrusive. Would definitely go back here.
Thanks for staying and for your review. If you come for another visit it would be great to see you again.
