About Ken and Valerie Swink
Ken and Valerie- We've been married 33 years, 2 daughters. Valerie is a jewelry and tile designer from San Diego and Ken, her husband and business partner, is from Burbank. We reside in the San Diego area. Now retired, we have time to manage this vacation rental on our own after having not-so-good experiences using property managers in the past. We like to rent homes through Vrbo when we travel, so we know what it's like, and what good service and comfort is. Guests have told us the kitchen is the best equipped they've ever seen, even over their own home's. That was the goal. And beautiful furnishings, too.
Ken and Valerie Swink purchased this House in 1995
Why Ken and Valerie Swink chose McCall
McCall is a magical place. It hit us like a thunderbolt in 1994 when we first drove into town. Not that we had planned to buy a second home, it's just that we HAD to once we felt this place. Over 24 years later, it's still heaven to us. The lake, the trees, nature, and the locals - all enchanting. If we weren't such weather wimps, we'd probably live in McCall year-round, but Southern California and the ocean makes a great combination with magical McCall. We found this house on a beautiful spot in Rio Vista overlooking the Payette River. The original house was built by Corey Engen, the Olympic downhill medalist who was part of the group that started Brundage Mountain Ski area. He also developed Rio Vista and kept this lot for himself. A bit dated when we bought it, we loved it regardless, and family vacations were blissful. And then it burned down. An electrical fire started when we weren't there. After the initial shock and tears, the loss turned out to be a blessing. We were able to completely rebuild, redesigning the floor plan, adding on a luxurious master suite, and buying all new furnishings. It's so much more beautiful now. The forest around it didn't burn - we were so lucky. We put in a circular driveway and lots of custom features. Valerie used bronze tile from our art tile line in her floor and wall designs. We love the Craftsman style, using fine touches like quarter-sawn oak cabinets, Arts and Crafts lighting, and warm wall colors. Big log homes have their charms, but this has a special quality to it that feels cozy, warm, refined, and peaceful to us.
What makes this House unique
Being outdoors in the forest is so wonderful that we made part of the deck covered so we could go outside whatever the weather. Especially when it rains - we love to go out and watch the downpours which usually occur in May and June. We also wanted a protected outdoor eating area with a gas barbecue. Two steps down is a wide deck with neither a roof nor high railings to block the view. We line up the chairs, feet on the rail, and toast our blessed life. One more tip: Morning coffee out there in a warm jacket is heavenly.

House is beautiful. Saw Deer everyday. If you are looking for a home to truly vacation in and get comfortable this is the one.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house was fully stocked with everything we could possibly need. Thank you!
Beautiful home overlooking the river.
We enjoyed our family get together in this beautiful home. The accommodations, kitchen supplies and resources were fantastic. It had everything we needed plus a beautiful view.
Beautiful winter get-away!
Our extended family of 8 spent 3 nights at this beautiful home right after Christmas. It was even more beautiful than we expected and so well stocked with everything that the owners could thoughtfully think of. We had so much fun cooking our meals in the gourmet kitchen and enjoying the magnificent views of the Payette river out the back. The beds and bathrooms were very comfortable and we loved the heated floor in the master bath. The snow covered U-shaped driveway was well plowed and it was easy to drive right into the garage. We would love to return and maybe try a summer or fall get-away. Thank you!!
Perfect Winter Retreat
We absolutely loved our week in this beautiful home. It has many attractive design features and is beautifully furnished and very well appointed, with every pot, pan, dish, and kitchen utensil a gourmet cook could want. Our party of 5 adults spent a wonderful winter holiday here. Although we spent a lot of time cooking and eating and reading in front of the fire, we had plenty of time to enjoy the other pleasures of winter in McCall: watching the snow fall along the river, building a snow man, going downhill and cross country skiing, visiting Gold Fork hot springs, riding a sleigh thru an elk herd (and having them eat the hay bales from under us), shopping, and playing trivia at one of the local brew pubs. The home is just about ideal for a Christmas/winter holiday. Our only caveat is the water heater; it is undersized for a house full of apres skiers. Fortunately, the fireplace hearth provides a cozy spot to wait for the next hot water shower.
What a beautiful well equipped home!
If you are planning a trip to McCall, put this house on your list! The home is clean, the views are beautiful, and the kitchen is beautifully equipped. The view from the deck is spectacular. We saw a full moon rise, and a black bear down by the river. You will feel right at home in this house. Plenty of comfortable sleeping room and heated floors in the bathroom. Super close to downtown McCall, but you won't want to leave the peaceful atmosphere this home will offer you. I have rented many properties over the years and this one goes to the top of my list. We will be back!
McCall is a four-season resort town on Payette Lake surrounded by high mountains and forests. The Payette River flows from the southern end of the lake, and our home is about 1.5 miles down the river. Besides the incredible beauty of the area and close access to nature everywhere, the people of McCall are warm and friendly. There's a feeling to the place that makes you want to stay forever.
Our favorite things to do, besides sitting on the deck gazing at the river, are hiking to the many high mountain lakes (we have trail books for you to use), fishing, swimming in the lake, North Beach, skiing, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, the Activity Barn for wild tubing rides, the Winter Carnival (last week of January/first of Feb.), and going to the local shops and restaurants.
