About Doris & Bill Shank
We have enjoyed the property which was built by our son who at that time was in construction. He designed the house with a few extra suggestions from us so that it could sleep 9 comfortably & have an extra bathroom. During my family's early years growing up we spent many memorable summers at the Bay in a cabin named Bears Den, which is how we came to choose the name for our new cabin at Raystown. That meant I needed a bear theme to go with the name so it was designed to have a shelf above the closets to be wide enough for a mounted bear plus other animals. Soon after we finished the cabin we decided to rent it out to others for summer vacations. It has been an enjoyable experience to have new guests & repeat guests come and go each spring, summer and fall to this beautiful area.. We hope everyone has a chance to visit the Raystown Lake Region soon. Thank you, Doris & BIll Shank

Why Doris & Bill Shank chose Huntingdon
The Location was the key to building on this established lot. Driving up Piney Ridge Road for the first time was an adventure in itself, with the curves in the winding road & being able to look down over the ridge into the towns & valleys below was just beautiful! There is so much to do in and around this area of the Raystown Lake. The town is just a few minutes back down Piney Ridge Rd to Rt 22, close to groceries, gas, pizza shops, shopping, walk in medical center at the Lake Raystown Shopping Center. Having access to cable TV & the Internet and cell phone reception were a few reasons we chose to build on this lot. The nice wooded setting has privacy even after the leaves fall. We welcome you to spend time here to unwind and relax in the comfort of our rustic home decorated with a bear theme. Parks Road is a dead end road with a path to hike down to the a no wake section of Raystown Lake which is maintained by the Army Core of Engineers which is an added bonus. Raystown Lake Visitors Center and Seven Points Marina and the beach area & Allegrippis trials l are within a short drive from the cabin down Seven Points Rd. We hope you will choose to stay at our property and see for yourself the comfort and beauty this area has to offer. Thank you, The Shanks

We really enjoyed our stay at the Bear’s Den. The accommodations were excellent. We really enjoyed grilling out, s’mores by the fire pit and dining on the screened in porch. We even got in a couple of games of pool. Everything was perfect. We also enjoyed walking down and swing at the bottom of the road as well as the super flowy mountain biking in the area. Will definitely return!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Being your first trip to Raystown Lake we are happy to hear of the fun and enjoyment your family had! We enjoyed having you.

Wonderful cabin. Great place to stay
We spent a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend at the Bears Den. The owner was so accommodating and helpful making sure everything was there to prepare the holiday meal and make our stay as comfortable as possible. Communication was stellar. Check in was a breeze.
The cabin was clean and spacious. The beds were super comfortable. Plenty of seating for dining and lounging. The setting was tranquil. This cabin has something for everyone!

Perfect home away from home
We were looking for a nice house for a family gathering. Bear’s Den was the perfect home away from home. It was clean, spacious, and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the family room with the big screen TV and pool table. Had great fun having a pool tournament between our family. Another great feature was the fire pit where we roasted mountain pies and s’mores and just enjoyed some excellent family time. The house is a short 5 min walk to the lake and about a 10 min drive to the marina. Raystown is a beautiful lake with so much to do and see. We had a great time hiking Trough Creek State park and toured Lincoln caverns. ( the Halloween tour was a bit hookie but ok)
Bears Den provided just what we needed for a great weekend. The owners where very easy to work with and very quick to respond to any questions we had.
I would highly recommend this house!
Thank you for your wonderful review! It was a pleasure working with you and glad to know everyone had a good time! Thank you, Bill & Doris
Parks road is located half way across Piney Ridge Road which runs about 8 miles long from Rte 22 aka William Penn Highway to Seven Points Road. Seven Points Road takes you down to Seven Points Marina & swimming area.
You will pass Seven Points Visitors Center which is a must see stop, Summer months stop by Tuesday Mornings to enjoy the Wake up reception with refreshments and give away's.
The Seven Points Visitor Center is just a few minute drive from the cabin on Seven Points Rd .
A must see is the visitors center with large deck overlooking the lake, don't miss taking time to see the Lake Map and how the lake was built. Many mounted animals from around the area. Stop by the gift shop with many souveniers to take home, many brochures of things to do while you are in the area. Driving on past the center will take you past the Allegrippis mountain biking trial entrance than on down to the swimming beach area with snack bar. Next is Seven Points Marina with a seasonal restaurant. At the Marina you can rent a pontoon boat and slip for an overnight stay . Call ahead for availability to rent a boat slip for a rented boat or for your own boat during your stay. There are also kayak's & paddle boards to rent.
The lake is a first class fishery hosting many fishing tournaments & pleasure boating events & is well know for it's stripped bass.
The Allegrippis Bike Fest is held annually in May & has become the largest in PA.
Juniata College is just a few minute drive from the cabin in Huntingdon.
Penn State is within 45 minutes to enjoy sports or plays or many fine restaurants.
Close by in Tipton is DelGrosso's Family Amusement Park fun for the whole family, ride the new wave or the lazy river. Swimming pools w/water fountains and many great rides for kids. A beautiful drive to Tipton, it's worth the 35 minute from the cabin.
Enjoy the view of the lake from Henderson Overlook than walk 300 yards to the Hawn's overlook to view the Dam & lake and possible spot an eagle flying by. To date 5 nests have been spotted. Don't forget to take binoculars along. I have directions to the Overlook in our welcome book back at the cabin.
Also, a must see is to drive out Rt 26 S than left on Rt 994 E, turn left on Little Valley Rd/Trough Creek Drive, about a 30 min drive along the beautiful Trough Creek State Park which surrounds a scenic gorge created by the Great Trough Creek, in my opinion one of the prettiest scenic areas to drive or hike through. Any day of the year the sights are spectacular!
State College is 45 minutes away for sporting events & many fine restaurants & play houses. In July take a day trip & enjoy the annual week long arts & crafts Festival.
In Sept and early October, rise early & drive 2 hours to visit the Elk Country in Benezette. Tour the visitors center & get a map of the viewing areas to stop and view and listen for the elk. Remember to take binoculars along. In Benezette stop by the restaurant /tavern before heading back to huntingdon. In September you will probably see and elk or two laying relaxing along the road on someone's lawn.
Back in Huntingdon enjoy many fine restaurants, Mimi's Rest & Martini Bar in downtown Huntingdon's Historic district or Edgewater Inn & Riverside Grill in Alexandra are a few great eating places & many Pizza shops.
Tour Swigart's Auto Museum or the Isett Heritage Museum.
Or the Station General Store in the former railroad terminal in Huntingdon's Historic district for Antiques & collectibles.
Golf on the many golf courses.
Clifton 5 movie theatre downtown with shows daily.
Best of all - just relax & spend time in the screened in porch or inside the cabin, you can call OIP for meals or pizza & meals delivered right to the cabin.
We have plenty of brochures in our welcome book to look through for ideas of places to visit.
Please do not hurry during your stay, we welcome you to relax and enjoy a little slice of heaven!!
