Escape it all in our much loved country house, available for weekly let’s with changeovers on Fridays. West Steel has something for everyone. For the adults in your party we offer beautiful panoramic views, wildlife and migratory birds in abundance, luxurious surroundings, peace and tranquility, open fires and log burners, large spacious rooms, a dining room to comfortably seat 12 for those country suppers and a spacious dining kitchen complete with Aga. Plenty of beautiful footpaths and byways within easy reach. Evenings on the patio watching the bats and later dark skies accompanied by the owl soundtracks.

The younger visitor will delight in the freedom our 11 acres of pasture, anciemt woodland, pond, dene with gentle stream, rustic climbing frame, hot tub have to offer.

We can even keep the teenager happy with plenty of space, separate lounges, wifi and sky tv.

We welcome well behaved dogs and can even cater for horses, both by prior arrangement and with additional costs.

West Steel is an extended Northumbrian hill farmhouse that can sleep 10 (potential for extra small children), set adjacent to an organic hill farm above the beautiful Allen Valley. The house boasts five bedrooms and four bathrooms two of which share a jack and Jill shower room and can therefore make a family suite. Three of the bedrooms have fantastic views of the valley below and surrounding fields allowing you to wake up to lambs and calves playing in spring, buzzards circling overhead in summer and picture postcard crisp frosty mornings punctuated with proud pheasants in the winter. Of course everyday you will wake to the delightful dawn chorus of our resident birds and maybe glimpse the woodpecker family who visit the garden.

Downstairs the living accommodation comprises a very large day kitchen with Aga, granite work surfaces, Belfast sink and a stripped pine kitchen island. A large table sits in the centre which easily accommodates 8 for breakfast. At the far end there is a living area with stone fireplace, log burner and sofas. The back door leads out onto the patio with coffee area and outside dining table, here you will find the conservatory hosting our hot tub. Back inside the impressive dining room with dark wood furniture can comfortably seat 12 possibly more if required. There are two sideboards and a heated hostess trolley to help when feeding a crowd. Off the dining room you will find a utility room again with Belfast sink, granite surfaces and a Sheila maid, this room hosts the washing machine. Through the other door from the dining room you enter our snug/reading room this has a log burner and comfortable chair. There is traditional living room with open fire in soft warm muted colours housing my small collection of painitings and prints again with lovely views. There is also a cool porch area for wine housing a second fridge for storage of cold drinks. To the rear of the house there is a downstairs toilet with cloakroom and a boot/dog room which can be set up with dog crates if required, we also have a gun cabinet for any shooting parties. Outside the house boasts large gardens, paddocks, woodland areas pond and stables

About The Owner

We are a family of four who love being outside in the countryside, we spend much of our summer up the coast at Beadnell and have therefore decided to share our lovely country home with others so that they can enjoy the house and fabulous surroundings. Oliver and Millie say the best thing about West Steel is the outside and particularly the dene where they have spent many days adventuring and have enjoyed memory making camp out cook out nights with friends and parents. West steel was my parents home until they moved to Hexham for a property with less land. Guy and I were married in the local church at Beltingham and held our reception at home with a huge marquee lining the cattle shed. West steel is situated next door to an organic hill farm run by Trevor the farmer and we enjoy seeing the animals in the fields particularly in spring. We are also lucky enough to have a small art gallery in the old farm buildings housing some fabulous work particularly sculpture pieces. Guy is a farmers son who now works in renewable energy and as such we have installed solar power and an air source heating system at the property. Oliver (14) is a classic car enthusiast and is very proud of his collection of two reliants, one robin and one rialto. Millie(11) is sports mad and loves squash, riding her pony up the hills in her pyjamas and collecting eggs from the hens. I (Sarah) am also a keen horse rider and just love the peace and quiet the area offers. the clear skies, bird noises, wildlife and the feeling of perspective walking or running to the top of the hill gives me. We hope you enjoy our home as much as we do and leave hoping to come back. Sarah, Guy, Oliver and Millie Dacosta Evans

Wonderful country location but close to lots of places of interest.

Mixed age group family reunion was the reason for our stay and West Steel suited everyone - beautifully appointed, plenty of space, kids loved the hot tub, the running about space and the wildlife.

Good walking and cycling in the area, Hadrian Wall sites within 20minutes, Hexham a good shopping visit. Excellent house for family groups, sporting parties or chill out.

Beautiful house, well equipped

  • 5 of 5

The location of this house is rather remote, but the views travelling anyway in and around the area are certainly worth it.

Lovely welcome pack on arrival, quality furnishings. I did feel that the photos on the Home and Away site didn't do it justice at all.

The farm dog did have our little mutt incensed that another dog had invaded 'her' space, but it seemed friendly enough.

Our party consisted of two couples, one mother and one grandmother and there was plenty of space for all of us to be together or apart as we wished. Lots of leaflets for local attractions which we added to, and an ordnance survey map too which was useful for the map lovers in our party!

A lovely home at a really reasonable rate.

Great location away from it all.

  • 5 of 5

The house is well equipped. We were two families with young children and there was enough to keep them busy. They particularly enjoyed collecting eggs from the chickens. We experienced all kinds of weather including being snowed in one day but, the snow being expected, it was great just to spend time away in isolation. It is quite a drive from the main road but that was expected. There are a couple of neighbours, one an artist and the other the local farmer, both of whom were extremely friendly.

Welcoming rural family home from home. Beautifully presented and equipped. Great holiday base

  • 5 of 5

Group of eight 'bus pass' friends in four cars, wanting to explore Northumberland, found West Steel to be a superb base. The house is newly decorated; many of the carpets, and much else, are new. This home is very well equipped for living, eating and sleeping, and easily accommodated us in great comfort. The kitchen is one we all would like in our homes: big enough for eight of us to live in comfortably during most of the waking hours we were not out exploring this wonderful county. The owners were very responsive before and during our stay and had left a generous welcome pack including a large and very tasty fruitcake. The September week we stayed was not the greatest for weather (thank you Aileen): the AGA was a constant source of warmth (and coped easily with our breakfast and dinner cooking requirements) whilst the rest of the house was always maintained at a comfortable temperature. Bedrooms were all equipped with comfortable beds and quality bedding. Nice touches like the plug-in night lights on the landing.

The weather also restricted local exploring (except the Hot Tub) and outdoor activities at the house, although there was one night when we could watch the stars. Wonderful! Days out took in Hexham Abbey, Durham Cathedral, Cragside, Willington House, Hadrian's Wall at Houseteads and even the local Whitfield Fair. But this just scratched the surface of what is there, and there are always those lovely Northumberland vistas.

A great week we would be very happy to repeat - but probably not in the winter as we don't have 4x4's! But the house would undoubtedly welcome you warmly.

Car: necessary

West Steel is ideally situated for exploring Northumberland, its beautiful coastline and fabulous castles at Bamburgh, Alnwick and the renowned Alnwick garden, Hadrians wall, the lake district, Scottish borders, the Durham dales. We are centrally located to explore all these areas easily in a series of day trips. A perfect place to walk and bird watch we have migratory visitors all around in fact curlews, oystercatchers and lapwings can be photographed within minutes walking from the doorstep. The local hills and quiet roads make this an excellent site for a cycling holiday for those who like the challenge of steep hills. Walkers will enjoy the many walks in the beautiful countryside. Kielder water and its fabulous dark skies are nearby for any astronomers amongst you. We can cater for shooting parties and those who wish to visit the area for equestrian pursuits and can even provide stabling and grazing. The fields, dene, woodland and stream make a fantastic play area for kids, there is plenty of space and wood for building dens and you could even enjoy a night camping out under the stars. There is a trampoline in the garden and an undercover hot tub for relaxation. Please feel free to collect eggs from the resident chickens for your breakfast.
