The Elk Meadows Lodge is located in Forbes Park, which is a private, gated neighborhood on 13,000 acres in the south of Colorado, 12 miles East of Fort Garland between Walsenburg and Alamosa and about 90 miles north of Taos, New Mexico.
Winter is our favorite season. We get moderate amounts of snow, the temperatures during the daytime are mostly in the 20-30 degree range. We have on average 300 days of sunshine per year and the winter scenery is just stunning. Snow-shoeing or cross country skiing on undisturbed powder snow right out the door is an experience you will remember forever. Snow shoes for 3 persons are available in the Lodge. There is a ski rental place in Alamosa (Kristi Mountain Sports) for ski’s, boots and poles. For downhill skiing the Ski areas of Taos, Monarch and Wolf Creek are about a two-hour drive, so you can be on the slopes at 10:00 am, great for a day or more of skiing or snowboarding.
The roads in Forbes Park are being plowed in the winter, yet you will need either an AWD or 4WD vehicle and good all season tires or you’ll have to bring some snow chains for your car to get up some of the hills that will bring you to the Elk Meadows Lodge.
The Elk Meadows Lodge is built on top of small hill at 9000 Ft. in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and offers spectacular views of Elk Meadows to the South and three 14K mountains to the west: Mount Lindsey (14,042), Blanca Peak (14,344) and Little Bear Peak (14,043).
No hunting in the park, but hunting is allowed in the neighboring San Isabel National Forest, only a 20 min. drive from the Lodge with an abundance of elk and mule deer.
The 1900 SQFT living space on the lower floor of the Elk Meadows Lodge has three spacious bedrooms, it sleeps six people in total. The spacious living room has beautiful aspen paneling and a wood stove. The kitchen is well equipped with a two burner gas cooktop, a small refrigerator, a microwave and a coffee machine and a toaster. There is one full bathroom with a shower, 6ft bathtub, toilet and double vanity. The exercise room has a rowing machine, an exercise bike and a 3 person hot tub.
The entire lower floor of the Lodge is available for our guests, which includes a large living room with open kitchen, three bedrooms, a full bathroom, a sauna, a recreation room with exercise equipment and a three person spa. Our guests will have their own entrance.
Forbes Park has lots of wildlife like deer, elk, turkey, coyote, bears, beaver, many bird species and all kinds of smaller animals. There is nearby fishing and hunting. The Sand Dunes National Park with artesian hot spring pools, Lathrop State Park, the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad, the Rio Grande scenic railroad and the picturesque towns of Fort Garland (with a Pioneer village and the old Fort where Kit Carson once resided), La Veta (lots of arts stores) and Cuchara (visit the Dog Bar or Timbers restaurant) are all within a 30-45 min. drive. In the winter you can go cross country skiing out of the door and for downhill skiing the Ski areas of Taos, Monarch and Wolf Creek are about a 2 hour drive, great for a day of skiing or snowboarding.
We invite you to our Mountain Lodge and enjoy the peace and quiet of Forbes Park.
The owners of the Elk Meadows Lodge are living on the first floor of the Lodge and will welcome you with a drink at your arrival.
Note: In June 2018 the Spring Creek fire went through Forbes Park. Fortunately the fire did not affect the Elk Meadows Lodge and the trees surrounding the Lodge.
