About this property
Nob Hill 4 Bedroom 3 Bath Neo-Victorian Home
Welcome to Ben Lomond House! Guest reviews confirm that this is an ideal family gathering spot for family get togethers, relaxation, or work. The well appointed kitchen with granite slab, comfortable beds in large bedrooms, fireplace, grand piano, and numerous spaces for relaxation make this home very desirable. Past guests include multi-generational families, professionals, and recording artists. The home is very centrally located on a quiet, secluded street in a neighborhood that is a mix of historic homes including the Governor's Mansion as well as other nice homes built during the 20th Century. Adults tend to comment on the master suite with with view of the gardens through the bay window, numerous dining spots, beds and linens, and genuine works of art adorning the walls. Kids are drawn to the lofts in the upstairs bedrooms, the tower room, balcony, and toys and games. Half a block away is a nice park adjoining a one hundred year old school with playground; four blocks away numerous dining options can be found, including Salem's best coffee house and crêperie and a restaurant with 20 beers on tap. Wine country starts just outside city limits and Portland and the Oregon Coast are a one hour drive away. It is my hope that you will feel completely at home here.

This home was perfect for our family’s stay in Salem. Great location, plenty of room, and very friendly and helpful owner/manager. We’ll stay here again.
We really enjoyed our time in this house. It has a great porch to hang out on, and room AC units to keep things cool in the summer. Rooms were comfortable, and the kitchen area worked great for our group to make meals and eat together. Also, parking was plentiful for accommodating our groups multiple cars.

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness, listing accuracy
The architecture and grounds of the home are beautiful and much to be admired. However, the property appeared to be undergoing repairs or renovation during our stay, and several listing details were inaccurate. The posted pictures, room and bed descriptions do not match the current setup, and common areas lacked adequate furnishings for a group to comfortably gather, watch TV, or play games. There were holes in walls, a missing light fixture, unfinished trim around the back door, and visible dirt/mulch piles in the driveway area. One dining set had loose seats that felt unsafe to sit on. The towel rack in the master bathroom kept falling apart. Cleanliness was also an issue. The kitchen cupboards, drawers, and oven were dirty, expired food was left in cupboards, and the refrigerator/freezer contained someone else’s food, limiting usable space. The ice maker was broken, and ants were present throughout the kitchen and parts of the house. The upstairs shower curtain was moldy. Closets were largely filled with owner belongings, leaving limited guest space. The loft areas described for children needed vacuuming and contained garbage. The home has a lot of potential, but it did not feel fully prepared for guests during our stay. The owner offered to come fix areas for us, but we didn’t feel he would be able to do enough in the time we were there. He also stated he had the flu and we didn’t want to be exposed during our vacation, so we turned down the offer.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s important to me to stay on top of any problems that might crop up with the house, as well as to know how guests perceive their experience. I’ve hosted guests for nearly 10 years and have consistently received excellent reviews. (I am a Superhost on air bee n bee and have a 4.86 rating, for example).
At the time of Carrie’s stay, the property was undergoing some minor cosmetic updates and preparation for sale, including new bark dust for my extensive flower beds and some touch-up work. The “holes in the wall” consisted of a handful of patches that hadn’t been painted yet, such as the spot where the old thermostat was before the new furnace and air conditioning were installed. In hindsight, The TV has been moved back to the living room and the house has beds in all fice bedrooms plus a futon I should have paused bookings until every detail was fully completed and refreshed.
That said, I did reach out the morning after check-in to ask if there was anything I could do to improve her stay. She did not respond. When Carrrie mentioned the ants the afternoon before she checked out, I offered to come over immediately to take care of the ants, which come into houses in Oregon when people leave sweets out on the counter. At this point she said that she did not want anyone (including an exterminator) to come into the house. She then immediately complained to corporate and mentioned the other issues without giving me a chance to address them and she asked for a full refund. I offered to refund the cleaning fee, which she refused.
Since then, the items referenced in this review have been addressed, including additional deep cleaning, repairs, and updates to the listing details to ensure expectations are fully aligned for future guests.
I appreciate the feedback and remain committed to providing a beautiful and welcoming experience for guests visiting the home.
This property is gorgeous, clean, well equipped, and a perfect location. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas (inside and outside). We truly felt that we were home for Christmas. It is a great location, walking distance to many locations, and minutes from downtown. Great communication with Matthew, the property manager. We would definitely stay here, again.
Very comfortable place for the 9 of us to relax and eat and sleep. House was well equipped. We could easily park 4 cars in the driveway. Great location. Would stay here again!!!!

It sure would be nice to understand about me down from a five rating to a three rating.
Past reviews will confirm I have almost always received five ratings over the last two years.

Perfect
Matt's home was perfect for our family of five. It is nicely remodeled while keeping some of the quaint charm of yester-year. The beds were very comfortable. Mathew was very accommodating as it was a last minute booking.

Perfect House
This house was perfect for our group of high school students. There were plenty of rooms, cool little additions to rooms, plenty of Nerf guns and plenty of room. Great location in a quiet neighborhood.
Matthew, the owner, was excellent to work with, and I appreciate all he did for us. The kids loved the house and enjoyed exploring all the nooks and crannies.
My hope is that when we come back next year this house will be available and we can stay here again.

Of course you can stay here again! It was a pleasure having you and it’s nice to know the House was apprecisted.
I cannot say enough positive things about our experience with this home. The way it is set up allows ample private space for multiple families. The downstairs has many inviting gathering spaces where adults could chat. The kids were delighted with the upstairs “tower” rooms and foosball table. There is so much character and charm to both the home and the neighborhood. Matthew went above and beyond as a host and our trip could not have been better as a result. I would highly recommend this property and feel incredibly thankful we had this space for our stay in Salem.
We loved this house! It was so interesting and spacious and met all our needs. There was lots of room and the four of us each had our own room. The beds were quite comfortable. We would absolutely stay here again if we were in Salem.
Among many great things about this house my favorite was the view out the master bedroom window while drinking coffee every morning. The kids loved the upstairs area and the fun lofts.
Do not book this nasty place!! Horrible place and host is horrific!!
Beware!Don’t book this dump!Greeted by host at checkin,as cleaning lady was leaving.Home has musty smell of fried food&cat urine.Home didn’t smell fresh, clean,&sanitized.Host informed us dishwasher wasn’t working&was leaking on floor. There wasn’t a foosball table in home as pictured in VRBO listing.Host informed me it’s no longer offered w/home.FALSEADVERTISING!Stay only declined from here.Went to cook a meal in kitchen, all dishes I took out of cabinet were dirty w/ dried crusted leftover food on them.Utensils in drawers &on counter were in same condition, dried leftover food stuck on them.Dishwasher continued to leak on floor the duration of stay.Told by host he would have handyman come look at it,but never happened.Host text me asking me to crawl under cabinets&disconnect pipes to dishwasher.I was not comfortable doing this.Dishwasher issue was going on before we arrived ¬ fixed.Discovered ALL beds had not been cleaned between guests.Beds had crumbled chip pieces all over covers when we pulled down the blankets, black hair all over pillows&sheets, as well as dried crusty looking stains on under side of the quilt&other blankets on bed.Other bed we found another guests dirty nasty socks in sheets of made bed.Not surprised socks were dirty nasty, my kids feet were black from walking around on floor of this place.Found wet bath towels from previous guests shoved in random cabinets throughout house&used, wet bars of soap w/some of the dirty towels.Looked like they reuse bar soaps for guests. All hand soap dispensers were empty.Home had terrible curb appeal, not as pictured. Backyard filled w/piles of brush, rundown&dirty.Laundry room was filled w/clutter,buckets of water w/wet socks floating in them&nasty trash all over.Huge hole in upstairs bathroom.Large ant problem in dining room, couldn’t eat meal at table w/o having to fight off ants.No where in booking stated a cat lives in home.Wouldn’t of booked had this been disclosed.I’m extremely allergic to cats&spent my time in home covered in itchy hives from cat.Reached out to host w/list of issues, giving him chance to correct things. He said he would see if cleaner could come clean. After several hours he replied she wasn’t coming. No other issues were discussed.Host stated all he could do was apologize.Requested partial refund&host blocked me on VRBO messenger.Contacted VRBO customer service who attempted to reach host multiple times via phone&email, host never replied.I have pictures of all this filth!

I think my reviews vouch for the cleanliness and overall desireability of this peopeety. 48 of the last 50 reviews gave me straight 5’s, and the other two gave me 4’s. I’m having a very difficult time understanding where Glenna is coming from. I could venture a guess, but I will not. I will say that I refunded the cleaning deposit because she said that she was not happy.
House was very nice. Lots of room. Wonderful communication with the host. Highly recommend and will stay again if needed and available.

Why they chose this property
The home is located in what is arguably the best neighborhood in Salem. It's on a peaceful, quiet street that also happens to be four blocks from great restaurants, shopping, and public transportation. is also within walking distance of Bush Park, at the edge of downtown and the university.
My home is 20 minutes from Wine Country, 55 minutes from downtown Portland, 65 minutes from the Oregon Coast, and the Cascades lie to the east with dramatic Silver Falls State Park in the foothills and 35 minutes from here.
What makes this property unique
You will feel the comforts of home as you eat al fresco on the back porch or cozy up on the couch in front of the fireplace to read a book or watch a movie. This home is very popular with adults as well as children.
