About David McLaughlin

I actually purchased the land, built the house and lived there for 5 years. Our daughter was born there in our home and it's very special to us. We moved to Boulder in 2006 but wanted to keep the home in the family and now it's available for others to enjoy. Many families have found out what a special place it is.

David McLaughlin purchased this house in 2001

Why David McLaughlin chose Nederland

What's great about this property is that it's very private, with no drive by traffic and surrounded by national forest. There's hiking and biking trails from the home and we're close to Nederland yet it feels very remote.

What makes this house unique

Our home is unique because you can actually hear the river while enjoying the huge view of the mountains, (continental divide) Since we're surrounded by national forest, we have many animals come visit and that's what inspired the hand carved 20' Totem Pole that stands in front of our home. If you want privacy, this is it, you can barely see a unoccupied cabin through the woods and that's it, no other homes in sight.

We offer a custom gourmet chef for private meals. Organic or not, vegetarian or not, great for family dinners or private parties.

Spring Break 2009

  • 5 of 5

Our family including 3 adult children, 1 spouse and 1 boyfriend = 7 total extremly enjoyed our spring break at this property. We put the free lift tickets to very good use everyday that we were there and soaked our sore muscles in the hot tub each evening. The two living areas were nice and many games were played on the upstairs table along with a few movies viewed on the TV downstairs. We used the kitchen and grill to fix almost all of our meals which saved us on food.

Comfortable home with majestic mountain views

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I and her sister and husband had a fantastic time staying 4 nights in this comfortable home. The views from the deck are truly majestic! When we were at the home we spent most of our time on the large deck. The weather was so nice, a high in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Quite a reprieve from the 100 degree weather back home in Texas and Oklahoma! The home is a short 10 minute drive from Nederland, where we ate most of our meals. We highly recommend Backcountry Pizza and Ned's. Backcountry has a nice selection of craft beers on tap for $5 and their pizza is so good. Ned's is great for breakfast. The main reason we do not give this home a 5 star rating is because there is only 1 TV in the home (a small one in the basement area). It would be a huge improvement if the owner were to put a TV in the den in the main living area of the home. The furniture is very comfortable in the den and it would be very relaxing to be able to watch TV from that room and look out at the mountains. Another issue with the house is the steep stairs leading to the basement bedroom and the upstairs master bedroom, as well as to the house from the driveway (three sets of steep stairs). My brother-in-law has arthritis and had a difficult time managing these stairs. For those in good health, this should not be an issue. There is not much that can be done about the stairs. We realize the home is built on the side of a mountain and you are going to have stairs as a necessity. One last small issue is the house is located relatively close to train tracks actively used throughout the day and night by trains. On a few of the nights the trains passing by would wake us up. However, overall, we liked watching the trains roll by and this was not a big issue for us. Overall, we would highly recommend this home for its majestic mountain views and great location in the mountains near Nederland. The owner is very helpful and easy to work with.

Quiet, serene, lovely house

Beautiful location to hold our Retreat. House was comfy, and the views of the Indian Peaks were stunning. Good hiking nearby and very quiet. David, the owner, very friendly and cooperative.

Ahhhhmazing! We just spent a week at this lovely home and everything about the experience exceeded our expectations!! Our clan included 3 families, with kids ranging in age from 7-18. The "dirt road" leading up to the home was a little daunting at first, but was we drove it over and over, our mini vans had no problem "off roading"! The house is about an hour drive from literally everything. We couldn't have picked a more centrally located home base! The house itself has everything you could possibly need and/or want. No need to overpack, the washer/dryer was one of the best amenities! There is a guide on the table that explains everything you need to know about the house, and local secrets (the sun dance cafe has wonderful breakfasts - share a plate, portions are enormous & delicious). Owners are super attentive, we had (what we thought was) a problem mid week and the owner had a maintenance man on the property nearly immediately (turns out we were just idiots 😬). The views from the balcony are unbelievable, there are a couple of elk that frequent the train tracks below, and you can easily hear the crick babbling. Two giant thumbs up from Themis crew!!

Birthday Trip

  • 5 of 5

I rented out this property for the weekend of my birthday so some friends and I could easily access skiing and gambling. The location was great! It was about 15 minutes from Eldora Ski Resort and 30 minutes from Black Hawk casinos. The views were incredible and we loved spending time in the hot tub looking up at the stars. Please be careful if you come in the winter, one guest had a 2WD vehicle and had a lot of trouble getting up the hill and ended up parking at the bottom of the driveway. We've already talked about renting it out again and hiking around the beautiful mountains nearby!
