About this property

Griswold Bed and Breakfast's main character

WELCOME TO HEAVITREE B & B

A Connecticut Bed & Breakfast

Our ancestors settled here in 1635 from Heavitree, England, thus the name. We are one of the few and longest living farms to continue in the founder's name "Geer". The Heavitree is an original 18th Century building that was saved and moved to its current location suiting its surroundings, a 140+ acre farm started by their ancestors in 1700.

"The house should suit the land, and the furnishings should suit the house".

The original structure was a tavern located in Rhode Island, which had plans to be destroyed to make way for new construction. At this time, the owner Charlotte Geer was looking for an early farm house to compliment her families' historic farm land. This tavern is the treasure that was sought after for two years.

When you walk through the doors you are taken back in time yet with all the modern amenities of today. There are twelve rooms including four sleeping chambers (three of which have private bathrooms), central air, Wi-fi and large rooms for private parties. Our spacious quarters consist of the unique 18th century Parlor, Dining Room, Keeping Room, Tap Room (which is part of the downstairs tavern) and the addition of The Great Room – completing the 4,780 sq. ft. farmhouse. Stroll the vast lawns, fields, gardens and take in the beautiful views. The expansive grounds are private and offer beautiful vistas.

A quiant home in a beautiful setting
Charlotte was great at communicating in the weeks prior to our arrival, and she was a wonderful host during our weekend stay. She and her partner prepared a delicious dinner for our family’s celebration, and their hospitality made the experience very special. - just keep in mind that toiletries are not provided.

Love this place!
We can't say enough good things about Charlotte, her farm and her lovely B&B. The accommodation is a lovingly relocated and renovated historic tavern, with modern conveniences like a-c, furnished with antiques. She has brought her vision of a house that fits her family's farm, where the Geers have lived for hundreds of years, to life piece-by-painstaking-piece. Now she hosts small weddings and events, and runs a great B&B. I was blown away by her reaction to the news that I don't eat animal products for breakfast (or any other time). Instead of the usual 'well, that's a nuisance - how about this box of cereal?' she made a wonderful fresh vegan breakfast for me, as well as a perfect eggs-and-bacon meal for Dan. The location is beautiful with great views and lots of birds. We and our two dogs had a great time and will be back. It's a shame there isn't a decent restaurant in a 50 mile radius, or at least we couldn't find one. Charlotte should start one, for sure.

About the host

Hosted by Charlotte Geer

Host profile image
I had always dreamed of owning an early home, and I got my chance when I came across this building in Rhode island, which was set to be demolished. At 26 I made it my mission to save the building and started my journey which continues to this day. I purchased the building in 1978 and the process began first dismantling the building , the building was carefully dismantled by Hopkinton post and beam with every piece being numbered, so it could be reassembled on its new site. it was reassembled in Griswold where it currently sits on land gifted to me by my father on our family Christmas tree farm, land my family has owned since immigrating to this county from Heavitree, England in the 17th century, hence Heavitree in the name. I first dug the basement which is now the tavern suite and had a temporary roof put over, this is where I lived for the first year and throughout most of the process of making my home which is now the B&B. I worked two full time jobs and was able to save up enough money after one year to have the frame constructed, and over the next 15 years, mostly by myself using my income and the help of some wonderfully talented craftsman who through the process became life long friends, I went room by room carefully recreated and adding to the beautiful interiors you see today. after many happy years in the home raising my family, I decided to realize my dream and utilize my passion and natural gift for hosting, and opened up my beautifully curated home as a bed and breakfast and event facility. my mission was to share with others what I have spent years creating with the attention to detail I put into everything I do. and committing myself to making my guests time here special and memorable, and after 40 years of hard, loving work I am still constantly improving on the building that I love, and adding to the experience I've created.

Why they chose this property

Heavitree is truly an experience, stay in a house form 1795 surrounded by antique furniture while having access to all modern amenities, with ultra speed wifi walk around our 60 acre tree farm. with unobstucted views of the surronding countryside. conviently 2 minutes away from 391 with nearby shopping just one exit away in Lisbon CT, close to Mystic CT, Providence and the RI coast line. the Foxwoods and Mohegan casinos are both located only 10 minutes away. Heavitree is the perfect place to relax.
