About Tom Kusel
We are a retired couple who fell in love with the Flamingo-Potrero area about 10 years ago. As the former owners and current managers of a highly popular beachfront house in Potrero (VRBO #80803), we've settled on condo 500 as our personal home-away-from- home, and are very excited to offer and share it with select guests.
Tom Kusel purchased this Condo in 2016
Why Tom Kusel chose Playa Flamingo
Unique Comfort and Safety in one of the most beautiful spots in the world! Condo 500 is nestled between two fabulous beaches: PLAYA POTRERO to the North, awarded the prestigious "Blue Flag" designation as an outstanding ecological beach: renowned for its soft volcanic sand and gentle warm ocean water-- a perfect swimmer's and walker's beach. And to the South, the spectacular white sands and clear blue ocean of the famous FLAMINGO BEACH. And there are many other world class beaches nearby: TAMARINDO for people-watching and shopping, PENCA and PRIETA for secluded "back to nature" experiences, CONCHAL for unparalleled scenic beauty, SUGAR BEACH for secluded love and romance, and PLAYA GRANDE for some of Costa Rica's best surfing. In short, CONDO 500 is perfectly located for the best SUN-SURF-POOL-BEACHES-RESTAURANTS-BARS-and NATURE experiences Costa Rica has to offer!
What makes this Condo unique

We loved our stay at your condo. Playa Flamingo is a beautiful place. We will be back.😁
A great stay!
Clean, relaxing, comfortable condo with amazing views! Washer/ dryer, personal safe, books to read, boogie boards (that we did not us), AMAZING wrap around balcony to enjoy the INCREDIBLE VIEWS, comfortable beds and Saioa (Shea) was great with recommendations (including a hand drawn map with points of interest / great restaurants etc.). Did I mention the AMAZING VIEWS! We did go on a disappointing ATV tour with Zero-sense-of-Adventure John (thru Wet 'n Wild). It may be good if you don't go with John (or if he doesn't bring his cell phone). Other than that, our stay in Playa Flamingo was awesome!
Fantastic Condo and location!
We had a phenomenal stay at Sunrise Heights. Tom was quick to respond and very helpful. We also loved Saioa who was there to greet us and answer all of our questions. The condo is perfect for a family of 4, lots of space and the views are breathtaking. Playa Flamingo has one of the most beautiful beaches and includes fantastic sunsets. I highly recommend Sunrise and we will be back again!
We had a fabulous time at Play Flamingo. We loved the wrap around porch and view! The kids loved the movies and boogie boards! It was so nice to have the beach towels and a washer and dryer to use! Our favorite restaurant was El Castillo in the nearby Surf Side area.
Great condo with spectacular views
The condo was perfect for our family of four. Everything provided just bring your toothbrush. The balcony alone could rent this place with the views it provides. Kitchen well stocked with even some handy small appliances. Short five minute walk to beautiful flamingo beach with its white sand. Small market at the bottom on the hill from the condo which helped. Also loved the gas grill on the balcony which we used more than once. Two pools also made for chilling out. On to the host who runs things down there Saioa. She is an absolute gem. From the moment we booked both her and the owners were very attentive to our questions and needs. Saioa answered back with in minutes if we ever had a question and gave us a great tour of the place with a personal map of the area since this was our first time down. Would definitely book again....
Well maintained house with ocean view
Our stay was wonderful! Everything in the home is in great order. Plus, this house has a great ocean view. The location was awesome--there was a lot of shopping and restaurants down the street and beaches were in walking distance.
500 Sunset Heights sits nestled high in the lush scenic hills of Flamingo. Featuring gorgeous panaramic views of Potrero Bay and the surrounding hills, "500" is only a five minute walk from Flamingo Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica-- white sand, clear water, shade trees, and delightful waves!
At the far end of the beach you'll find "Coco-Loco." Don't miss this popular restaurant! The tables are on the sand, and their signature "Coco Loco" drink is definitely something to be experienced (especially at sunset!).
Just a minute's walk up the road from the condo is the Paradise Resort. It's open to the public-- luxury amenties, swim-up bar, Casino, and unparalleled views from the tables of their exclusive outdoor restaurant.
In the other direction, down the road you'll pass La Cuchara Verde, a vegetarian restaurant next to the small convenience store. Try their wraps and smoothies-- aboslutely delicious! http://lacucharaverde.blogspot.com/
Past the nest of Car Rental Offices (Avis, National, and Economy) and on the right is the Flamingo Plaza. There you'll find a pharmacy, a gift shop, and two great restaurants, the iconic "Marie's," and Angelinas. Marie's was one of the first restaurants in Flamingo, and started off as a little shack on a dirt road in the jungle. Now at its new location, it still offers a fabulous breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu, and the best margaritas in Flamingo. http://mariesrestaurantcostarica.com/
Angelina's answers the need for a "fine dining" atmosphere. The tuna "tartar" is our personal favorite, but all their selections are scrumptious, including their unique Pizza selections.
At this point we've only covered half the fun!
On the other side of the Flamingo isthmus, along Potrero Beach, you'll find an entirely different community of casual restaurants and nights spots. One of our favorites is the "Tico" restaurant Pleamar, (and its super-casual "sister" restaurant, Cafe Azul, next door.) The food in both restaurants is outstanding and reasonable! But the experience of sitting at ocean-front tables, under the palms, and in the breeze, is nothing short of heavenly! You'll find these restaurants about 10 minutes walk east along Potrero beach from Sunset Heights.
The Bahia Del Sol, another spot that shouldn't be missed is about 10 minutes farther along. Enjoy their groto-style swim-up bar, restaurant, and gorgeous gardens. We've spent many a "happy hour" at the Bahia Del Sol at sunset!
At the far end of Potrero Beach is the "infamous" Las Brisas beach bar and restaurant-- their fish tacos are to die for, and on Wednesdays "Ladies Night," people come from all over to enjoy their wild and crazy music and dance party.
We love to rent a golf cart for at least part of our stay. With a golf cart you can zip around the entire area, and even explore some of the lesser known but equally magical beaches nearby. For example the hidden white sand beach of Playa Penca: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN8LhYyhVhs the romantic "Sugar" Beach (especially at sunset):
and the beaches of Las Catalinas Resort. You'll love them all!
If you decide on a car you can head towards the surf town of Tamarindo.
En route you'll find the quaint little "Tico" village of Brasilito with its souvenir shops and restaurants. A short walk along the beach leads to the stunning white shell cove of Playa Conchal. You can't miss this one!! Crystal clear waters, perfect for snorkeling, swimming, or just enjoying the view.
Tamarindo on the other hand, is a bustling tourist town full of restaurants, souvenir shops, and surfers. Everything and anything is available in Tamarindo--
It's definitely worth the visit.
With the rental of Condo 500 you'll enjoy twice weekly maid service and the full support of our local manager Saioa. She'll help with everything, from airport pick up to arranging any number of tours and excursions: Zip line? Snorkeling? Deep Sea Fishing? JetSkies? Sunset Catamaran? Nature Tours? ATV Tours? You name it-- it's all within easy reach!
And why not try our Chef service? Miguel will gladly shop, cook, serve, AND clean-up for as little as $13/plate, depending on menu selection. His food is fresh and delicious, and you and your family and guests can make yourselves comfortable on our expansive balcony, enjoying yet another stunning Costa Rican sunset while dinner's being prepared!
