About the host
Hosted by Joanne
We are Joanne and Matt, and we are proud to share Open Season House with you.
We purchased the former Wandiligong Post Office in December 2021 because of our love of the North-East alpine area. Our family are mountain bike riders and resort skiers. Matt and I are mountain hikers / campers, and Matt is a back country ski tourer.
We instantly fell in love with the property – the little white house with the white picket fence and red roof, the welcoming and homely feeling as soon as you enter, the wide entrance which once welcomed postal and bank customers, the spacious passageways, high ceilings and abundance of natural light, the views from the back deck, the expansive garden with its giant chestnut tree and rolling lawn which cries out for quoits and bocci and decadent long lunches, and the little white and red outbuilding whose original function is now all but forgotten by locals and left to much discussion and speculation about its former use.
Over the years the property has played an essential role in Wandiligong community life (as a post office, telegraph and savings bank), and has been many people’s home, and we are excited to share all of this with you.
We hope you also fall in love with the natural beauty of Wandiligong, the hills that surround it, the painted sunsets and sunrises, the lush chestnut groves and apple trees, the birdsongs, babbling Morses Creek at the bottom of the lane, the 1800s goldfield history of The Diggings, the bike and walking paths connecting Wandiligong to Bright, the paragliders launching from Mystic Mountain, the famous Wandi Pub and all of the surrounding attractions and festivals.
Thank you for staying with us and we hope you enjoy your stay.

Why they chose this property
Wandiligong is a small hamlet in a tranquil valley set against a dramatic backdrop of mountains and forests in every direction. The entire township of is registered with the National Trust as a classified landscape.
Wandiligong was once a bustling gold mining town in the 1800s. There are many remnants of the gold mining era, such as The Diggings and Chinese Swing Bridge, you can visit today. With the decline in mining, agriculturalists began planting nuts, apples, tobacco and hops.
Open Season House is surrounded by historical buildings which still stand to tell the tale of times gone by – the former butcher directly across the road and Bennett’s Store.
From Open Season House, it’s only a short walk to the famous Wandi pub, or stroll down Lardis Lane to The Diggings and join the Bright to Wandiligong Rail Trail.
You’re on the doorstep of Victoria’s best ski resorts at Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, and for food and wine buffs, there are plenty of gourmet driving tours winding through picturesque Buckland Valley, King Valley and Milawa regions, along with historic Beechworth and Rutherglen.
