About Tom Funke

Hello! My name is Tom Funke. I am the author of 50 Hikes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, 50 Hikes on the North Country Trail, and the owner of Upper Peninsula Outfitters. I hold a Biology Degree from Western Michigan University (Go Broncos!) and I've recently retired from a 25 year career working in the non-profit world.

I was born in Muskegon, Michigan but grew up in Bangor, Michigan, and have lived in Cadillac, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and most recently Hastings, Michigan.

Tom Funke purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Tom Funke chose Germfask

Inspired by the building in Grand Marais which is home to Grand Marais Outfitters, I knew this would be the building which would be home to my outfitting business. It has a ton of history, two apartments, and a large garage. Best of all, access to the Manistique River.

Most of my life I've lived in old farmhouses, having learned that there is a lot of work that goes into remodeling and upgrading facilities.

What makes this apartment unique

This house has been many things over the year: a township hall, train station, dance hall, salon (as in hair salon), general store, canoe livery, and a private residence.

We utilize solar energy for part of our electricity needs with the future goal of being totally self sufficient on renewable energy. There is an artisan well (currently capped) on the property, if uncapped, would provide unlimited energy through the use of a Pelton Wheel.

We are at the trailhead for snowmobile trail #43, and, just minutes from the Seney National Wildlife refuge. We are also surrounded by state and national forests. It is truly a wildlife lover's dream to be here.

We will be back!

  • 5 of 5

Very roomy and convient location. Plenty of parking and close to the trailhead.

Tom had great, fast communication with us. His contact Brian, on property was very helpful and friendly. He even tracked us down at the restaurant across the street after we checked out because we left a couple items behind. We will be back!

Thanks Again!!!!

Clean, cozy and comfortable house decorated with all sorts of neat knick knacks. Caretaker Brian lives upstairs and helped up maneuver our large snowmobile trailer when we arrived. Close to the trails. We will definitely stay here again!

The perfect lodging for our vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We were so fortunate to find this historic, roomy, and cozy property in the quaint little town of Germfask in the middle of the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Although we didn't get to chat with the owner, who we discovered is acquainted with my husband from past work with Michigan Audubon, we were able to visit with our on-site hosts and their hospitality was lovely. My family appreciated the history they were able to share, they made sure we were able to contact them with any questions. This home is very roomy, clean, quiet, and comfortable - we didn't even have time to enjoy the spacious living room. Our sons felt like they had their own space, which they loved. We enjoy birding and appreciated that the bookshelves are filled with bird books and outdoor resources. There's a restaurant less than half a block away, and a convenience store, as well. The price was just right for us, and we would enjoy staying here again if our travels take up back to the UP. Thank you for making our stay so pleasant.

Great place to start a Pictured Rocks National Shoreline adventure!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Tom's place as part of a backpacking trip through the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline. Tom also owns the TrailSpotters shuttle service, which delivered us to our hiking start point. Our driver, Brian, was very helpful and flexible after a long drive and late arrival to the apartment.

The apartment was well equipped for us to cook a hearty breakfast before our hike. The three bedrooms would allow a larger group than just me and my wife to stay here. Some of the beds are small, but if you're heading to camp, any size mattress is a step above the ground.

The apartment really helped us to kickoff a successful and beautiful week in the woods! In addition to Pictured Rocks National Shoreline, the apartment is close to numerous ATV trails and the Seney National Wildlife Refuge for canoeing, kayaking and hiking. What a beautiful area!
