About Tom Funke

Hello! My name is Tom Funke. I am the author of 50 Hikes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, 50 Hikes on the North Country Trail, and the owner of Upper Peninsula Outfitters. I hold a Biology Degree from Western Michigan University (Go Broncos!) and I've recently retired from a 25 year career working in the non-profit world.

I was born in Muskegon, Michigan but grew up in Bangor, Michigan, and have lived in Cadillac, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and most recently Hastings, Michigan.

Tom Funke purchased this apartment in 2015

Why Tom Funke chose Michigan

Inspired by the building in Grand Marais which is home to Grand Marais Outfitters, I knew this would be the building which would be home to my outfitting business. It has a ton of history, two apartments, and a large garage. Best of all, access to the Manistique River.

Most of my life I've lived in old farmhouses, having learned that there is a lot of work that goes into remodeling and upgrading facilities.

What makes this apartment unique

This house has been many things over the year: a township hall, train station, dance hall, salon (as in hair salon), general store, canoe livery, and a private residence.

We utilize solar energy for part of our electricity needs with the future goal of being totally self sufficient on renewable energy. There is an artisan well (currently capped) on the property, if uncapped, would provide unlimited energy through the use of a Pelton Wheel.

We are at the trailhead for snowmobile trail #43, and, just minutes from the Seney National Wildlife refuge. We are also surrounded by state and national forests. It is truly a wildlife lover's dream to be here.

Short but good stay in Germfask!

Germfask is a fun town, small but fun. The VRBO lodge is clean and very nice, with friendly and helpful owners. Stay here!

Spacious, clean apartment with lots of great books. Backyard is very cool, with a fire pit and a wonderful overview of the Manistique River. Great bar across the street. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Will stay again.

Lots of space, great hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived kind of late, well after dark. We were greeted with warmth and friendliness, and even some suggestions about what we might want to do the next day. We took the 7-mile drive through the Seney Wildlife Refuge and enjoyed it very much, especially seeing all the swans! The house provided great basic accommodations for people who just want someplace to stay while they are enjoying the outdoor activities. The decor includes some fun antiques, including an old pair of hockey skates, a signed hockey stick and a great fishing rod and reel. It is not a beautiful house, but it is comfortable, spacious, and has plenty of TV channels. We would definitely stay there again.

Perfect for a Pit Stop On Your Way to Pictured Rocks

  • 5 of 5

We were coming from down state headed up to Pictured Rocks. This was a perfect location to break up the long drive before heading to the trail head. The owners were SUPER nice and accommodating, and helped us with some trip details. We had 3 couples. It would be nice if they had 3 full sized or queen beds. Instead, they had 2 and 2 twin beds, but the great price outweighed the inconvenience for us. The history and decor of the place were really fun and we all really admired it. I would definitely stay here again. They also have a more affordable, more rustic option to camp in the back yard which I appreciate and might take advantage of next time. They have separate ammenities for campers which is really convenient. All in all, I highly recommend this place. Everyone in our crew had a positive experience in and around the property and I would definitely stay again.

Great place and great hosts!

We had a very pleasant stay at this place in July 2017. Location is really good from all major attractions in UP. There is a small grocery shopping at 2 mins walk if you need anything.
