About this property

Brookside cabin on Budding Homestead

Step away from it all into the quiet mountains of old Vermont where you'll find our tiny cottage nestled on the banks of our year round brook. Her melody changes throughout the seasons but she is almost always there to enchant you with her music. Sway in the hammock by your private waterside fire pit or head inside to curl up on the couch and revel in a sublime, uninterrupted view of the forest. This space beckons you back to simplicity, to our roots, where you can breath deeply and let your soul smile.

We live in a very peaceful and rural area of north central Vermont which provides a great mix of quiet and privacy, but is also with in an hours drive to most of the states interest points. There are 16 ski resorts within an hours drive, as well as breweries, State Parks, lakes and more. Fine dining is available within 30 minutes in multiple directions. Sitting at just over 1600’, we are in a unique microclimate that sometimes get a bit more snow than our surrounding towns. Our neighborhood is all tree lined winding dirt roads that weave along a tributary of the White River. Take a walk up the road to our closest neighbor who has a lovely Gotland sheep farm. The sheep and their guardian llama Alaska are typically grazing right by the road in front of the main barn. Kim is also a brilliant fiber artist and occasionally teaches various classes so please feel free to inquire about those if interested. Continue up the road to the dead end and turn left for breathtaking sunset views. If you're looking for something a little more sweaty, grab your bike or head out on a run "around our block" (about 4.5 miles) that takes you around and down to the bustling river, then leads you on a steady incline to an enchanted foot trail that winds up the hill and back around to the top of our road. Dirt roads abound and we're happy to help you figure out a path to explore =) We are also close to several snowmobile trails should you be inclined to stay with us while traveling the VAST.

Amazing, secluded location with a babbling brook!
This is probably one of the best views and experiences I’ve had in a short-term rental. The scenery was superb and so relaxing. I was here at the end of February, with snow on the ground, and it was a winter wonderland. The cabin itself is well-appointed and very comfortable, even for such a small space. I had all the pots and pans I needed to cook for one every day. (I stayed here for 2 weeks, which is probably longer than most people.) Remember the fridge size and don’t over shop! Tankless water heater, so there was plenty of hot water. If you need to work while you’re visiting, including video calls, the router is in the cabin and I connected just fine with the Ethernet cord I brought along. Everything is so well put-together and organized and the furnishings are all very cozy and comfortable. An excellent stay with very considerate hosts.

Great leaf peeping in VT
We had a great time at the small, seculded cabin. It was perfect for myself, significant other, and our dog. We really enjoyed the large window and listening to the creek just below us.

Cozy cabin
We most recently stayed at Brookside Cabin on the Budding Homestead and had the pleasure of meeting the owners and their children. The cabin was spacious, clean and nicely decorated-large comfortable bed, living room, kitchen facilities and bathroom with shower and tub. They also had a propane heater which made the cabin comfortable in the chilly evenings. We truly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

Snowy Vermont getaway!
My husband, myself and our dog really enjoyed this beautiful cabin. And it snowed for us while we were there! We are from SC so we hardly ever see snow, what a treat! Cabin was super clean and the bed was so comfy, we will definitely be coming back.

As a family, we decided to leave the comforts of our suburban shore community and venture here in hopes of connecting to nature as we build a loving homestead. Our dream for this property is to become a regenerative, self-sufficient, organic farm where we grow and nurture the land and ourselves simultaneously. In the years to come, we envision fruit and nut trees, permaculture, gardening and a small family of animals to share our space. We want our kids to be connected with the natural rhythms of nature learned from our land and the surrounding area. At the same time, given our rural setting, we also hope our cottages will bring an expansive and diverse group of people from whom our kids (and we) can learn and evolve with.

Why they chose this property

The location and lay out of this property spoke to us. A small house to keep us close, cottages to share life with new people or family, a babbling brook to sing us lullabies, open acreages to raise crops or graze animals, barn/work shop, maple trees for sugaring, berry brambles and woods for exploring.
Far enough from convenience to learn patience and planning, but still a short drive to civilization when needed. It is quiet here, and safe. Neighbors are genuine and kind. The woods are still wild (fox, bear, moose, coyotes) and the region is simply beautiful.

What makes this property unique

Plans include adding a game room/social area for both cottages to enjoy. Visions of natural swimming pools and sauna are also in the works. Trails through our diverse woods and possibly some rustic forest accommodations may be in the works as well. We'd love to hear your ideas too!
