We here at Holiday Vacation Rentals regret that our guests in this instance were dissatisfied with their experience, but it is equally regrettable that they have seen fit to so grossly mischaracterize the situation in the above review. On May 26th, the City of Petoskey inspected the home for vacation rental license renewal and reported no problems. On June 14, one of our staff conducted a pre-arrival inspection of the home and did not notice a foul odor at that time. On June 15, the guests arrived. At 11:44 pm that night, we received an email reporting “a strong odor throughout the house”. There was nobody in our office monitoring at that late hour. We provide a 24-hour hotline to guests to respond promptly to urgent problems, but the guests chose to send the email rather than call this number. On June 16, we read and replied to the email reporting the odor shortly after 9 am. Jared responded promptly by going to the home to investigate the odor and install an air purifier. Although there was no reason for the guests to delay or cancel their plans for the day, they were at the home when Jared arrived. He did notice the odor and believed it was coming from the basement of this home. He noted that the guests had left the basement door open and all the windows closed. They told him they had done so because they wanted him to be able to smell the odor. He advised them to keep the basement door closed, which if an unfinished stone and mortar Michigan basement, and open the windows to air the home out as a temporary measure and immediate solution to the odor while the source was investigated further. He also advised them that they should proceed with whatever plans they had for the day (there was no need for them to wait around while he took care of the problem). Jared determined that one of the home’s two dehumidifiers had failed. It had been raining that week, and this being an older home, built 50-60+years ago, the single operational dehumidifier was evidently not able to keep up. Jared then left to purchase a new dehumidifier and a second HEPA air purifier with activated carbon filtration. He returned to the home, installed the dehumidifier and additional air purifier and ensured they were operational. That afternoon, the guests called, who informed us that the odor had improved. They complained, however, that their planned trip to Mackinaw Island that day had been ruined because they chose to remain at the home until after Jared’s arrival.
