Villa la Grona is a spacious modern villa (300 square-meters) surrounded by (4000 square-meters) terraced gardens. The views from the house and the swimming pool are very beautiful. You may not want to get out of the house, once you are settled in your deck chair with a good glass of wine or a fresh beer.
The villa is at ten minutes by car from Menaggio centre, boulevard, shops, restaurants. It is also 10 minutes from the golf course (which is the oldest in Italy with very difficult greens).
From the courtyard with a flight of outer stairs you reach the main floor: homely living room with cosy fireplace, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, shower room. Roofed terraces and access to the gardens.
A narrow winding staircase takes you down to the sleeping quarters, two double bedrooms each with shower room and French windows opening up to the gardens. The third double bedroom also with a private shower room is on the same level, but has an independent entrance from the garden. The property is fenched with car parking.
Menaggio is a little town and has everything you need, but is also at 30 minutes by car to Como-city and Lugano (Switzerland), it has a very nice city centre with narrow streets, good shops, restaurants and cosy piazza's. In summer there are concerts, open air cinema, antique markets, and all year round the weekly market is a great attraction also to the locals, they come down from the mountain villages with fresh made cheese, have a chat while buying their vegetables and you will find your Italian bargain between pots and pans, shoes and garments.
Menaggio has as lovely boulevard, midget golf, swimming pool and is very pleasant for an evening stroll, it has a boat stop. In front of you is Bellagio and Varenna, the beautiful triangle and has frequent boat services.
Lake Como was already mentioned by the Romans, (archeological sites, Romanesque buildings) and in medieval times often the scene of combat between ruling families, you will notice the watchtowers in the villages along the shores, walled castles.
Lake Como is a very beautiful lake and wealthy families for Milan in the 18-19th century built here their summer residences to get away from the humid warm town, a number of these villas and their parks are open to the public (villa Carlotta: azalea's), Villa Melzi, Villa Balbianella), Villa Monastero in Varenna.
Today Lake Como is again very much "en vogue" the rich and the famous (cinema and football players) fight for the "exclusive" lake side properties.
Lake Como is surrounded by mountains, good for walking, hiking, mountain biking, but there are also excellent narrow roads - for the easygoers - and you will discover forgotten villages, old churches, and small restaurants where they serve the local food (polenta, misultin: sun dried fish of the lake) the local wines are excellent and strong.
The climate is temperate due to its sheltered position at the south of the Swiss Alps, Spring time starts in April and Autumn in October, the Winters (not bad for a Winter break!) are bright and sunny, although a good snow fall is not an exception and therefore the higher valleys and tops of the mountains remain snow covered far into March. The hottest month is July (30 C).
