The house was my grandmother's and has recently been fully refurbished so that each floor can be independently occupied by three to six people. It is ideal for family reunions since it affords privacy when necessary.
Marble flooring throughout means that the house remains cool even during the hottest summer. All windows are double glazed and feature traditional green shutters. There are two beautiful verandas (with awnings) suitable for dining or sunbathing.
The bedrooms are decorated with tasteful antiques and either double or single beds may be requested. A child's crib is available on request. Be assured that all mattresses and bedding are new! Several of the bedrooms feature dramatically painted ceilings.
The property also features two smaller apartments (behind the main house). These each feature two bedrooms, a shower, and a small kitchen. There is a driveway large enough for two to three vehicles.
The villa and annex are situated on a wide avenue a one minute walk from the 'Giardino' area of Barga, where a supermarket, cinema, shops and restaurants are located. In less than five minutes you can enter the walled Medieval 'Centro Storico' where opera and jazz festivals occur every summer and where an antique market is also a frequent occurrence.
Almost every night of the week, during the summer months, live music and food festivals occur, either in Barga or in a nearby town. The food is superb, fine wines are served and the entertainment is suitable for young and old alike. If you continue walking up the road for ten to twenty minutes you will soon find yourself amongst the beautiful Garfagnana mountains with its many trekking routes suitable for walking or mountain biking. Within driving distance is the Grotto del Vento, with its magnificent tour of underground caverns.
A swimming pool is also within walking distance, as are tennis courts and horse riding stables. There is a fully equipped park for children. For the less athletic the town offers a library with a good selection of English books and magazines.
Barga is well served by regular bus service to nearby places of interest: Bagni di Lucca with its famous spas, Castelnuovo, a nearby walled city with a popular weekly market and Lucca with its famous grass-ringed road atop its uninterrupted walls.
During the summer months a bus departs each morning for the beach resort of Viareggio, returning later in the day or evening. The Versilian Coast Resorts of Viareggio, Forte di Marmi and Lido di Camaiore are within easy driving distance. Spectacular twisty roads take you high into areas where the famous Carrara marble is still being excavated. The less adventurous can take the expressway to the beach although they may encounter heavy traffic during the month of August. The Versilian coast also offers much in the way of nightlife and cultural activities.
There is a train station at Barga-Gallicano which features direct service to Lucca, Pisa and the Cinque Terre region. Connections can be made in Lucca for Florence, Venice, Bologna, etc.
