Steiners' Place in Gumpendorf - Newly Remodeled!
Year Purchased: 2008
Why the Owner Chose Vienna
Hans grew up in the neighborhood and we love to visit to take advantage of Vienna's special "gemutlichkeit." The Gumpendorf neighborhood where we are is a wonderful example of a "gut buergerlich" (bourgeois) district with all the amenities that entails. But now young people are moving in, so there are not only traditional "Gasthaus"es and wine gardens, but internet cafes, little bars, restaurants with updated Viennese cuisine. There are still old-fashioned shops - an excellent butcher, a sublime bakery, green grocers, and much more. And there is a supermarket right in the building. We eat well!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment
Steiners' Gumpendorf is just around the corner from Bus 57a which comes every 10 minutes and takes about 7 minutes where it ends at the Ringstrasse, just at the Museum Quarter, and from there it is one subway stop or a short walk to the Opera or to Stephansplatz, the center of Vienna and the oldest district. At the other end of the 57a line, a short walk takes you to Schönbrunn Palace, the glorious baroque summer palace of the Hapsburgs with its park and gardens. The famous Naschmarkt with culinary delights, fresh organic produce, lively restaurants and a Saturday flea market is in the neighborhood. The famous shopping street, Mariahilferstrasse, is the next street parallel to Gumpendorferstrasse. The great amusement park, the Prater, can be easily reached by U-Bahn.
Vienna is rich with things to do from the opera and concerts to swimming in the Danube, from wine tasting in a nearby wine village to extraordinary variety of museums. Hike opporotunities abound and all are reachable by cheap, fast, clean, and safe public transit. Vienna is consistently listed as one of the most liveable cities in the world. And our apartment is in the heart of it.
The world famous market with stalls selling all kinds of marvelous foods plus restaurants. Stop there on your way home from the Inner City and buy food for dinner.
One of our favorites, an old traditional neighborhood bistro with excellent traditional foods and wines. Free internet.
The City commissioned a well-known artist to do up this old building.
This line stops just around the corner from our apartment and takes you to the Inner City in about 7 minutes. Or a 20 minute walk
All of Vienna from the Grtel to the Danube Canal has very limited parking, mostly two hour limits. Most of the area outside the Grtel street parking is allowed and free. Sechshauserstrasse area is
Owner's Map of Vienna
The apartment is owned by Hans and Judith Steiner. We live in Palo Alto, California, but Hans is from Vienna. He is a Professor at Stanford University and as retirement is coming soon, he hopes to spend more time in Vienna. Judith is a retired executive director of an environmental nonprofit and has thoroughly enjoyed remodeling and furnishing an apartment with future guests in mind. We have three grown children who also love Vienna and our 33-year old with his wife were the first to stay in the apartment. We were happy to hear that not only people of our generation love the neighborhood, but the 30-year-olds do too.

Review Text: Come home after a long day of work or sight-seeing to a comfortable, quiet, welcoming apartment - with a well-equipped kitchen and good beds. Staying in this apartment made all the difference to our time in Vienna. The apartment is exactly as described - Judith took great pains to provide lots of helpful information about things to do and see in Vienna, as well as how stuff worked around the apartment - and was on hand via email for questions while there. The location is very convenient to Vienna's amazing transportation system. We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to our friends and relatives.

The Steiner apartment was the perfect choice for our recent trip to Vienna! Having never used VRBO, I must admit I was nervous at first! Although I would not consider myself a seasoned traveler, when I do travel, my standards are high. We had never been to Austria, did not know any german, we were unfamiliar with the Euro, knew little about the transit system and on top of that, my 75 year old mother and I are both nervous travelers! Our host, Judith, put all fears and concerns to rest. She was patient and most helpful with all of our many questions and concerns prior to departing the states. In advance, she sent us all pertinent information on Vienna. This included information on sights, surrounding areas, restaurants, transit system, districts, shopping, tours, euro and even provided local emergency contact information. Once I had this knowledge, my concerns of traveling alone with my mother disappeared. Upon our arrival, we easily located the apartment via a taxi. We had the keys in advance and followed her detailed instructions on how to find our way into the apartment. The apartment was clean, bright and cheerful. It had everything we could possibly desire. The beds were very comfortable, the shower was hot with great water pressure, and the kitchen was well stocked with all you would ever need to cook with and eat! It was spacious and quiet! We never once heard a neighbor! We never once heard a car outside! There was even a computer and 2 cell phones for our use! After very long days of sightseeing, walking, touring and eating it was truly a welcoming experience of going "home" at night and crawling in bed. Thank you Judith, for sharing your home with us and for your assistance in just about every aspect of our trip!

What a gem! Our family of five absolutely loved this beautiful apartment. It doesn't get better than this. All the modern conveniences you could need in the heart of the city. Easy to access underground. Great bakery around the corner we visited each morning. Market conveniently located next door to building. The apartment is clean, white and airy with gorgeous hard wood floors and beautiful furniture. You will not regret staying at this luxurious home.

My daughter and I just returned from a stay in this wonderful condo in a quiet neighborhood in Vienna. It was close to a bus line, grocery store, small park by a church, and furnished with all the amenities of home, including cell phones, internet, and all the kitchen and cleaning supplies you could ever need. The owner even provided us with great suggestions for dining out, using the transportation lines, and many more pages of very helpful notes. We truly felt like a part of the city --- and loved coming "home" after a day of exploring this exciting city. The condo was all you see in the photos -- and more! We would definitely sign up again if the opportunity arises. Thank you, Judith.

If you will be spending time in Vienna - this is the perfect apartment. It is one of the best rental experiences we've had by far. This is a home (not just a rental), with well-appointed furnishings and all the amneities you could ask for. Judith does an incredible job of supplying written instructions and suggestions.. If you like to cook, the kitchen is very well-equipped . The beds were 5-star hotel quality - and the entire place is light and sunny and CLEAN! Thanks Judith for such a memorable experience!

The apartment had plenty of room, was exactly as described and was very comfortable. Further, its location is very good, being near several touriust sites and a shopping district and also being a short walk to two underground lines. There is also a food store within a few feet of the building's front door which makes it easy to stock up for your stay. I would recommend this apartment to anyone and, if we return to Vienna, I would rent it again.
