Two friends and I rented the Delta River House for a mini retreat. We had a wonderful time exploring the many hidden treasures in the house and garden, as well as the surrounding communities. Mornings started with a soak in the hot tub, and ended in quiet evenings on the delta. The house is very comfortable and affords all the amenities you could need. We plan to do it again in the fall and would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a quiet and peaceful place to stay.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This place is amazing. It was exactly what we wre looking for to accommodate my large-ish family during a trip for my brothers's wedding down the way at the grand island mansion. The house was large enough for everyone to fit easily. The beds were all comfortable. the kitchen and dining areas were spacious. Having laundry on site is priceless. The yard was great for kids. My eldest son would have LIVED on the dock if he could have (fishing). The kids really got a kick out of the sunken tub too. We had several guests stop by to visit and had lots of comfortable seating and everyone remarked on what a nice place it was. The minor hiccup we had upon arrival was dealt with as efficiently as possible. The only complaint I have is we needed more towels. Women with long hair use extra towels and I was forever washing so others would have clean bath towels. Oh, and the pool room was decorated in a bawdy fashion. It is stated that this room isn't for kids, but if we were in there, the kids followed, naturally. The local Chinese takeout is fabulous (a quick read of the book Bitter Melon is in order before a trip to Locke-fascinating!), and the one restaurant I tried in walnut grove was atmospheric, with good food to boot. Bob's or Tom's or something The area is really remote and beautiful. The only thing about the remoteness is make sure you do a bit of planning so you aren't forever running into Elk Grove (and BTW, the superwalmart in Elk Grove is a hellhole. Enter if you must, but keep your children close). Overall it was a terrific place, we would stay there again in a heartbeat, and would recommend it to anyone.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This was such a great place to stay, we had our whole family from 3-to 58 years and everthing in between. I have very high standards for travel since I have done it for a great part of my life and this is up there at the top of the list. A relaxing wonderful place with something for everyone. We are avid boater's there is no better part of the delta for good water. Everyone loved the grounds, there is everything you could want here.... Go and stay awhile... This is what relaxing was meant to be... I will go back. I did this on a whim and it could not have been any easier to make the arrangements. if i could give it 10 stars I wouldRecommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our stay at this home was fantastic. The property and its amenities exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival, we were amazed by the attention to details in every room. We've stayed in other rental homes before and this one felt more "homey" than any of the others. Very cozy. The beds were very comfortable too. Though the house is filled with paintings, beautiful furniture, and various decorations, it is exceedingly clean. Whoever cleans this place must have an amazing attention to detail. We brought our 19' family ski boat and used the dock. The dock is in good condition with canvas/rubber bumpers to protect the boat's finish. As the owners mention, the dock is on the Sacramento River, and the current is fast - and the boats go by fast too. The yard is beautiful, well maintained, and inviting. We sat around the gas fire pit and in the spa every night. The BBQ is top-notch. The kids played in the front yard on the grass, which is safely enclosed by fences, gates, and landscaping. Another thing I appreciated was the office space. I used the full size L-shaped desk to set up my temporary office. It was a quiet place to catch up on work. We gave this home an "excellent" rating because it matches and exceeds the description. The one thing I would like to mention is that this home is not meant for small children. There are many steps, a pointy tile corner in the bathroom that we put a pad on, lots of "trinkets" that need to be moved out of reach, and many very valuable pieces of furniture that needed to be "childproofed" upon checking in (ie. grandfather clock). That being said, I would recommend this home for anyone with children over 6 years old (ours were 1 to 4 yrs old). It's a great party house (we had friends over for a BBQ one night). It's a romantic home as well. Its central location to the Bay, Sacramento, and other Delta destinations make it a great spot. We plan to return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We came for the Pear Fair this time, which was great fun people-watching, browsing the stands selling goods, and eating pear in creative and a variety of ways. The parents had a great time practicing pool and soaking in the hot tub. We also took them to Locke, a nearby town with some history, and to a small wine bistro in Walnut Grove that had perfect outdoor seating and relaxing atmosphere. And on the delta car ferries!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We recently rented this house for our summer vacation. It is located on the California Delta (we are a family of boaters). I can honestly say I have never had such a painless home rental experience. The instructions sent by the owner were well detailed and easy to follow. The house has many amenities and really does give you a sense of peace and relaxation while you're there. Located on a very private lot, the house is set back from the road and surrounded by lovely landscaping. There is an outdoor hot tub that was easy to use and really came in handy after a long day of water sports. There was a great stereo system and an game room that provided hours of enjoyment for my teenage boys. The dock that is associated with the house is actually across the road but the gate is locked and you can leave your boat securely tied. The levee cuts are high and act like a wind block so you don't have rough water to deal with which was really an added bonus for us. The water here does have a very fast current so I would not recommend letting small children swim off the dock. Overall this was an great house to rent if you like boating on the California Delta. I would highly recommend.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway.

We had such a great time at this place! I rented this house for my boyfriend's 30th birthday because we needed a place that was on the water for his boat and a then a quiet place that we could come back to at night. We had a couple friends stay with us as well and they all loved it too! The way the house is layed out is really neat, from the pool room with all the souvenirs on the walls to hot tub with outside fireplace, and the large deck to hang out on. The boat dock and in town is literally a few minutes from the house and the Ryde Hotel is not much farther either. I would definitely recommend this place. The only issue I found were the bugs, you have to make sure to close the windows and doors because those nats definitely like to come in at night time. That's just what you get with the area, but other than that it was perfect!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The place was as beautiful and spaciously described. There was ample room for all of us to mingle, hang-out, or find some alone time. Loved the seclusion and having our own dock by the river - more than enough room for multiple boats and PWCs. The owner was very responsive to my questions and kept in close contact while I was planning my reservation, as last minute as it was. I am planning to return here in the near future and would recommend it to friends and family.Recommended for: Families with young children.

The owners really thought of stocking the house with everything - extra linens, laundry detergent, cleaning items, cooking/bakeware - to make stay comfortable. House was clean and as advertised. Grounds were beautiful. Master bed was very comfortable. The only problem was that we contracted "hot tub folliculitis" from the hot tub and had to waste most of a day of our vacation in urgent care, then weren't able to use the hot tub for the remainder of our stay. Also, the sauna was out of order. The owners were responsive to our complaint and compensated us fairly. These things happen......Owner response: The compliments of the home are very much appreciated. We strive to provide a home away from home feel in a resort style setting. It is our mission to offer a 5 star experience. The hot tub experience mentioned was something we immediately resolved for all future guests by contracting a professional pool/hot tub service rather than having our house keepers take care of it. The hot tub service advised that the sanitization system we were using (Bromine) was adequate for individual homeowners (we used the spa for 8 years using Bromine and never had a problem).and he recommended switching over to a form of chlorine. We had them drain, clean, refill and stabilize and they attend to the Spa every week to keep it balanced. We also have a sanitizing product at the spa with instructions to guests to put a capful in the hot tub after the final hot tub use of each day. Prior reviews indicated a very pleasant hot tub experience, it's unfortunate that this mishap occured but the guest was very nice and understanding. We were not asked to provide a refund or credit but felt it only right to credit back one full day rental for the inconvenience. The sauna is out of order due to a part on back order and the amenity of a sauna was removed from the web site awhile ago. We offer repeat guests a 10% discount for return stays and any guest referring someone who rents receives a 50.00 finders fee.

About the owner: We are travel agents, travel writers and photographers. We fell in love with the Delta many years ago when we were avid boaters and we know the Delta like the back of our hand. From anywhere in the Delta you can find things to do and come back to the Delta River Grove Cottage to continue your experience. We love the out doors and this property feels like you are outdoors even when you are inside with all of the windows and beautiful scenery surrounding you. The wild life on the property between all of the different species of birds, cottontail bunnies, squirrels really makes you appreciate the wonders of our area. We love to watch sunrises and sunsets and always enjoy being on the water wherever we are. We love to entertain and this home is the perfect place to do that.
Why the Owner Chose Walnut Grove:
We have been enjoying the delta since 1966 and it is a beauy and serenity like no other place on earth. After a sunny fall Sunday drive and spotting a piece of heaven we decided to buy and make it our permanent home. We raised our daughter here and then after she went away to College we decided to live our other dream, the dream of living part time in Mexico. When we aren't there we return to the Delta River Cottage and it's surrounding areas.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We enjoy jet skiing and a ski boat, water skiing and wake boarding and not having to haul the boat/toys out of the water at the end of the day, just tying up to our dock. Floating on a raft tied to the dock, sun bathing either on the dock or in the private english secret garden. Fishing off of the dock, watching the sunrises and sunsets. Relaxing in the jacuzzi in the evening. Sitting out by the outdoor fire pit roasting marshmellows with the kids. Going to breakfast at one of the local cafes. Wine tasting throughout the delta and Lodi. Photography and bird watching. Riding the Harley all around the river. Taking a local fishing charter or eco tour of the area. Great history surrounds you with the old towns in the Delta to explore. Close proximity to many great day trips including Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, San Francisco, Lodi or explore Freeport, Isleton, Walnut Grove, Locke, Rio Vista.
