Ojai chateau / country house description
Treat yourself to breathtaking mountain views, pink moment sunsets, and tranquility.
This amazing 1500sf, 1 Bedroom/1 Bath country home is one of two homes on 8+ prime acres nestled in Ojai, California, nicknamed the Shangri-La of Southern California. The indoor-outdoor home was designed by the owner, a professional landscape designer, with a high-use yet low-maintenance mentality and has beautiful, user-friendly elements.
This special home has been featured in every Ojai Home & Garden Tour, in magazines & television, and has served as the location for many photo shoots.
With 300-degree open mountain views, this true eco-home runs on solar power and sleeps 2+ in 1 bedroom with a queen bed on an eco mattress in a pretty, airy bedroom. The great room has a vintage-style kitchen, a gas-ignited wood-burning fireplace, wifi and cable tv. The shower for two is luxurious with 4-heads and a steam sauna. High end natural finishes throughout, including mediterranean-inspired integral colored plaster and modern radiant heat concrete floors.
Outdoors, enjoy beautiful landscaping set against the backdrop of a 2 acre certified organic farm and CSA (community supported agriculture). Leave with your own CSA share on sundays. Check out www.manofarm.org for more about Mano Farm.
Dine indoors or al fresco under the wisteria covered patio arbor with the option of hiring the personal chef across the street to create something wonderful just for you with farm fresh produce.
Just past the fountain with lily pads and singing frogs (!), through rustic wooden doors, you’ll find a cliff-side jacuzzi with an outdoor shower and beautiful sunset views. The jacuzzi is private but shared amongst both homes.
Walk to hiking trails, mountain biking, seasonal swimming holes and horseback riding.

This property is ideal for your personal retreat or for a romantic weekend getaway!
Stay on-property for your entire visit, or drive or ride your bike downtown into the magical hamlet of Ojai, where the iconic film Shangri La was filmed. Currently famous as the idyllic village hideaway for Hollywood insiders and celebs, Ojai has much to explore.
Downtown restaurants are California cafe casual and offer something for everyone, from authentic burritos to tapas Mediterranean-style, from gourmet deli to LA vegetarian, from homemade pizza to local wine tasting, and four coffeehouses thrown in for good measure. Natural-foods markets are locally owned, and the picture-perfect Sunday Farmer’s Market is friendly and regionally famous. Shopping is upscale, with boutiques lining the main drag, and summer festivals and outdoor markets spread out through the downtown park and playground each weekend throughout the summer.
For the outdoor explorer, the surrounding back roads through orange and avocado groves and up into the mountains are breathtaking, and endless trails wind through live oaks, expansive views, hot springs and seasonal swim holes. One of Ojai’s most popular network of trails and seasonal swim holes is a 1/4 mile stroll from your home headquarters, and can be explored on foot, mountain bike, or horseback, with trail rides organized through a ranch at the trailhead.
For the sports enthusiast, Ojai is a nationally famous golf and tennis destination, home to the golf course at The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, and placed second in a national “tennis town” contest due to it’s perfect weather and pristine open tennis courts. In addition, the lovely Lake Casitas is just 5 miles up the road, with the best bass fishing in California , and a local waterpark for the kids.
Shoppers will find a quaint downtown street of locally owned upscale boutiques and art galleries, including an independent toy store and several quality consignment stores for shoppers who love the hunt. And don’t miss locally fairly famous Bart’s Books, an open air mecca for used books and the people who love them.
Historically, Ojai has served as home to global spiritual and artistic leaders such as Krishnamurti, the Theosophists and Beatrice Wood. Currently, scores of healers, bodyworkers and mystics comprise an active healing community. And local art is everywhere, with frequent studio tours available.
Come treat yourself to a truly unique holiday, a wide open space to e-x-h-a-l-e ....

Impossible to ever leave this house...
Impossible to ever leave this house...
My boyfriend and I wanted a quick getaway and all the hotels were booked in Ojai which in retrospect was a total blessing because we found this house. We never wanted to leave this house, we want to get married on this property, we didn't even want to leave the house to get dinner... it's absolute perfection. It feels like you are in a vineyard in Tuscany or a house in the Mediterranean. The interior design is comforting and stylish. The grounds are stunning with views in every direction. I wish we had time to use the outdoor jacuzzi, next time! It's close to downtown Ojai but just far enough to make it feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The shower is next level, it has a sauna feature and I took about three showers a day just to experience it. I have no idea how to cook but the kitchen was so epic that I had to do it justice, I even made fresh squeezed orange juice. The owner Kim is the most accommodating and gracious host ever. Can't say enough good things about it. Enjoy!

A Wonderland Hidden Gem in Ojai
A Wonderland Hidden Gem in Ojai
This property is like a Sumerian Paradise; a warm glow of the evening sun shinning on the beautiful garden, the home which seems to be in perfect harmony with nature, and the ever so helpful, cheerful and wonderful property owner adds to the peaceful yet vibrant feeling which overcomes you when you arrive. My wife and I had the pleasure of having our wedding on the property and staying in the home. Which is elegant yet simple, with everything you need to host a wonderful gathering or to laze away your day. Everything was there as described, and additional amenities were provided by the property owner during our Ceremony and Party. Our friends and family still talk to this day about Red Tail Ranch with the fondest memories and with earnest desires to return. Ojai, is wonderful escape from the busy world, surrounded by hiking trails, wonderful restaurants, yoga studios, farmer's market and curios and quaint shops. All easily accessible by bicycle or car from Red Tail Ranch. We cant wait to come back.

After 2 stays here
After 2 stays here
I've stayed on this property twice over the past 3 years, once for a wedding and then again for a weekend visit.... And I'll be there again! Behind the backyard is a lot of space so you dont see any other homes. Its very quiet except for a few horses that are stabled 1/4 mile away. The hot tub has some stunning views of the mountains and the fruit trees were producing quite a bit of donut peaches when I was there. Ojai tends to be rather expensive though this rental is very reasonable for a luxurious eco stay. I am a bit dismayed that it is now posted on the web, I was secretly hoping this place would stay under the radar!

I have stayed on this property on more than one occasion. Every time has been wonderful. The landscape is beautiful. Waking up every morning surrounded by exuberant flowers and fresh fruits and veggies growing in every directions is amazing. The house is clean and very well taken care of and the shower....AMAZING! If you like to sing, be sure and belt some tunes while you are enjoying the acoustics. I have not met a rude person on the property. The owner is one of the most caring, lively and accommodating people. The locations is great. Close to everything you may need... bank, grocery, coffee shop, bar. I

This home is literally one of my favorite places on the planet! We live in Bali and spend part of each year in Ojai. I have stayed here several times and each time I am in awe of the beauty of this property. The house has a great style. It's super hip and at the same time very, very comfortable. We love watching the 'pink moment' sunset over the mountains from the hot tub and sitting around the fire pit at night looking at the stars. Our daughter always has a blast picking peaches and avocados and playing fairy on this magical property. We walk to the swimming hole and ride the bikes out to a delicious breakfast at the Farmer and the Cook. We will absolutely stay at this very special property again and again! Thank you!!!!

Elegance in Nature!!!
Elegance in Nature!!!
WOW, WOW, WOW! Was just here with some girlfriends for a weekend retreat and NEVER wanted to leave. This place is magical. Loved hot tubbing under the stars, showering in the morning sun, Meals outside under the arbor, laden with grapes, and close proximity to the awesome café/store “Farmer and the Cook” for delicious food when we were lazy. When we did cook in it had everything we needed, including a vita-mix. Everything about this place is beautiful and relaxing. And the profusion of flora is amazing! Highly recommended!!

Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: When I purchased this land in 2000, it was a chemically farmed citrus and avocado orchard. I made the three year transition to organic, designed and built a green home, diversified, and the culmination of those efforts are a small and wonderful community we now call Red Tail Ranch complete with an organic farm (Mano Farm) and CSA.
Why the Owner Chose Ojai:
If you want to experience living in nature but with all the amenities of a modern home, to 'escape it all' but without giving up anything, then you need to spend some time here at Red Tail Ranch. it is a magical and restorative place and we seek like minded people to enjoy all that it and Ojai has to offer.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
The view, the serenity, the acreage, and the peacefulness that cannot happen at a hotel or high end resort is why people rent private homes in Ojai. Imagine the quiet of a remote cabin, but with all modern amenities and a short walk or drive into 'civilization' in the quaint form of Ojai, CA, a town of less than 10,000. This property was an Oak Grove Indian milling site 9 to 10,000 years ago and features a working certified organic farm and CSA on 2 of the 8 acres.
