Location: Abiquiu, New Mexico, USA (75 Min. N. of Santa Fe; above Abiquiu Lake, Hwys. 84 & 96.) View Map

Accommodations:  House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

Keywords:  Casita (small house)

We have been featured (with 8 special NM destinations) in the November, 2011 issue of New Mexico Magazine (p. 42)--a near full-page photo of the living room with a paragraph of features.

75 min. North of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise--but for the sounds of birds and wind over the mesa.

Our "casita" (little house) is set high on a mesa overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted. We're located in an area called Piedra Lumbre, or Shining Stone; which you reach by taking Hwy. 84 past Abiquiu for six miles, then turning west on Highway 96 toward the Jemez mountains, and Abiquiu Lake. The casita is set on a mesa one and a half miles from Abiquiu Lake.

To take advantage of the incredibly long and wide-open views down valleys in all directions, we have built two "portales" (porches), one on the north and one on the south sides of the casita, so you can sit on the north side and gaze down the valley and over the lake to see the red cliffs, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun on the shaded southern portal, as you look across valleys towards the surrounding Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000-foot, flat-topped mountain that O'Keeffe loved to paint and that Native Americans regarded as a spiritual site. Since there are no city lights to compete, sunsets, sunrises, and endless stars at night are spectacular from both porches - especially from the outdoor Hot Tub.
We live in Santa Fe and are available to our guests by the hour.

PS We have a low mileage Jeep Liberty, off road SUV, available to rent for winter months, and spring to fall for off road exploration, 10% off SUV rates (Enterprise),
You might also consider Amtrack travel; we'll pick you up at the historic
Lamy station and send you on your way with Jeep.

PPS: Horseback Riding! Fred Espinosa, a very savvy, experienced wrangler, has a beautiful set up in Tesuque, just a few miles up 285/84 north of Santa Fe, with a range of beautiful horses and trails. Reasonable rates. Call Lori, 575 751 6180

Perfect home away from home!

Guest: Roc and Mary (TEXAS USA)
Date of Stay: 01/21/12 Review Submitted: 01/28/12

Being return guests we knew what to expect, but still when you wake up that first morning it takes your breath away-it is so beautiful. Scott and Glynn have paid such attention to detail that there is nothing missing! The spa was a heavenly oasis during the cold evenings. We watched the stars cross the sky from the spa or one of the portales every night it was clear. Dakota (the BIG dog) was a welcomed guest, although I think he thinks he lives there and we were visiting him. Thank you for the advanced warning about his packrat habit. He only made away with two of my items, although he tried to snag other items! He was a real joy and we looked forward to his daily visits. The casita was clean and inviting. We loved the heated floors. The bed is so comfortable I hated to get up in the morning. We slept like babies. We even watched the stars one night while laying in bed. It is a perfect place for viewing sunrises and sunsets! I suggest future guests visit the Monastery (Christ in the desert). The drive to the monastery is wonderful. You can get about 2/3 of the way by car, but really should have 4WD to make it the entire way. Also be sure to eat at El Paragua in Espanola. We ate there 3 times this trip! But don't trust a GPS to get you there! It will lead you in the wrong direction. They are trying to straighten that out! You can stop and ask almost anyone and they can get you there. The Abiquiu Inn had a wonderful breakfast. We cooked at home on several nights and found everything we needed to make wonderful meals. We had the best time just being together and hanging out! Thank you for allowing us the use of your beautiful casita. We will be returning next year for sure.

Owner response:Our yearly returning guests such as this responder help us to be sure we have everything one can think of, especially for those who love to cook or simply "hang out" and enjoy the 360 degree views. Not just 360--I forgot to include the millions of stars overhead, which she describes so well here, and the interesting rocks beneath your feet. Glynn and Scott

Total Relaxation

Guest: Keith (Houston, Tx)
Date of Stay: 12/11/11 Review Submitted: 12/22/11

Our recent 6 night stay at the casita was just what the doctor ordered. Total relaxation. We thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The views are fantastic, the isolation is to be envied and the casita had everything we could ask for, from a cozy Kiva fireplace to an inviting hot tub. Might I add that the king sized bed was like sleeping on a cloud, so soft and nice with a full compliment of fluffy pillows. The stars at night were so amazingly bright, all the way down to the horizon and you could look directly out the bedroom window for a great view of the Big Dipper. I would recommend that one bring a telescope, as the place is ideal for star viewing with a high desert elevation and little humidity. We cannot wait to return.

We kept pinching ourselves.

Date of Stay: 11/03/11 Review Submitted: 11/17/11

Seriously, who gets views like this, ever? Look in any one direction, and you'll feel blessed; take in the whole 360 and it's almost embarrassing to think you're actually experiencing it all from one spot. Giddy, that's how we felt. Not to mention, the casita is wonderfully cozy and meticulously appointed. We hope to be back soon for more of the above plus daily visits by friendly Dakota from the next house over.

Owner response:For those not yet "in the know," Dakota is a young, male, funny standard white poodle who lives on the other side of the mesa. But here is how one guest characterized him: "My only disappointment has been not seeing coyotes, and there is no way you will convince me that that white dufus dog is an albino coyote!" GRACE&BERT

Guest: GRACE & BERT (Ft. Bend County/suburban area of Houston, TX, USA)
Date of Stay: 10/18/11 Review Submitted: 11/14/11

Serene and beautiful views 360 degrees, on top of a lovely mesa away from busy highways and roads. Very comfy and spacious living room/dining room/kitchen, very well appointed with open plan. Bedroom is tucked away with a very comfortable king bed with nice linens. The bathroom has a spacious shower and lavatory countertop w/ ample storage. A full sized washer&dryer is tucked away in the bathroom. Two patios w/ comfortable seating and tables affording views of the Pedernal and Abiquiu Lake. The DVD collection of movies is considerable. We cooked quite a bit because we did not want to leave the beauty, although we found on a number of occasions The Abiquiu Inn Restaurant quite good. We would definitely stay here again. There are a number of hikes close-by. The hosts are attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The interior decorations of art, artifacts and weavings are quite nice and tastefully utilized in the spaces. The place was hard to leave for all of the above reasons.

Just Perfect!

Guest: carrie (minneapolis, MN)
Date of Stay: 09/15/11 Review Submitted: 09/24/11

We stayed last year in September at this casita and the day we got home, I immediately booked an entire week for this year. We normally have very busy summers so one thing I kept thinking about all summer was getting to New Mexico and staying at this beautiful property to take in the mountain air, the amazing everchanging landscape, and the peace. Driving up the long dirt road, I could tell that my friend was getting a little nervous when he asked if the place had indoor plumbing. I smiled and let him walk in the door. He looked at the views out every window and then the inside of the casita and just said, "Wow!" Scott and Glynn have done an amazing job of providing all the comforts of home and more. The bed is super comfortable, the kitchen has everything you could want, living room cozy and comfortable, fireplace, two outdoor patios (front and back) tables/grill/hot tub under the sun or moon. All of it---just perfect! I'm booking my week for next year. :) Thank YOU!

My husband and I spent two nights at the casita. It was our 12 year anniversary of our wedding at Plaza Blanca - Dar Al Islam. Everything was WONDERFUL! The view, the amenities, the hot tub! I think next time we will take paints and canvas. Also, the Pedernal was calling but with limited time, we will hike it next time. Thank you Scott for accommodating us on short notice. You made our dream weekend a reality!

Completely Relaxing and Fully Equipped

When we arrived to the casita we were overwhelmed with how well put together it was. Everything you could possibly think of that you may need during your stay was there. They had layed out a ton of information of things to do and the information they gave us for places to eat was so helpful. Me and my wife couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. It was very romantic and quiet everyday we were there and we were overwelmed with the sights that we encountered during our stay. I would have to say the best thing about the stay was the fact we were in no man's land and completely surrounded by mountains. I cannot think of one thing more that we would have wanted during our stay that we didn't already recieved. Thanks for the great times.

Great

Guest: Don (Toronto)
Date of Stay: 07/10/11 Review Submitted: 07/23/11

The casita sits on a mesa overlooking magnificent red cliffs and blue lake on one side and overlooked by majestic Padernal mountain on the other. Wondering which of the great patios should be used to relax and read a book or take in the scenery was as stressed as it got for the whole week we were there. If possible, try and take the drive to the Christ in the Desert Bendictine Monastery...whether you are spiriritual or not, it's well worth the time. The casita is very well appointed....everything you could possibly need is there. The owners have obviously chosen everything for the casita with great care and it shows. We were delighted with the place and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a haven of peace, quiet and tranquility.

Enchanting.....

Guest: Jilly (Delray Beach, Florida)
Date of Stay: 06/04/11 Review Submitted: 06/14/11

I never fully understood what Georgia O’Keefe meant when she wrote "It's my private mountain, it belongs to me. God told me that if I painted it enough, I could have it." Until now. After gazing out at Pedernal Mountain every morning and every evening from one of the porches of the casita I now understand the power, the peace and the serenity it holds. From the moment we arrived at the casita we realized we were under its spell. It is difficult to find words to describe the beauty on top of that mesa. It is so overwhelming and ever-changing. Each view cannot be compared to the next. It is simply impossible. The casita sits in the middle of all this wonder and it holds up to its surroundings. It is both elemental and elegant. The décor is beautiful and true to New Mexican style and the casita had everything we could possibly need to make our stay nothing short of perfect. The bed and pillows were beyond comfortable. The kitchen was fully equipped and then some. There was a nice library of music, DVD’s and plenty of books about the area. We tried our best to do most of the hikes Scott and Glynn recommend in their information book and managed most of their local restaurant ideas. The casita even comes complete with a neighboring dog that will steal your heart as well as anything else you leave unattended. In my case, it was a left sneaker. The day we left, I left the right one in the wood pile in case he wanted the pair. We will definitely be back to this little piece of heaven as soon as we can. In the meantime, we will sit quietly and remember our private mountain.
