Accommodations:  Casita (small house), 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

75 min. North of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise--but for the sounds of birds and wind over the mesa.

Our "casita" (little house) is set high on a mesa overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted. We're located in an area called Piedra Lumbre, or Shining Stone; which you reach by taking Hwy. 84 past Abiquiu for six miles, then turning west on Highway 96 toward the Jemez mountains, and Abiquiu Lake. The casita is set one and a half miles above Abiquiu Lake.

To take advantage of the incredibly long and wide-open views down valleys in all directions, we have built two "portales" (porches), one on the north and one on the south sides of the casita, so you can sit on the north side and gaze down the valley and over the lake to see the red cliffs, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun on the shaded southern portal, as you look across valleys towards the surrounding Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000-foot, flat-topped mountain that O'Keeffe loved to paint and the Native Americans regarded as a spiritual site. Since there are no city lights to compete, sunsets, sunrises, and the endless stars at night are spectacular from both porches - especially from the outdoor Hot Tub.
NOTE We live in Santa Fe and are available to our guests, almost by the hour.

PS: IF THE ABIQUIU LAKE CASITA CALENDAR IS FULL FOR YOUR DATES (OR JUST FOR VARIETY), WE HAVE A NEW, TWO-BEDROOM CASITA ON THE NEXT MESA, A MILE NORTH, WITH BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF THE CHAMA AND PUERCO RIVER ESTUARIES, THE RED CLIFFS & PEDERNAL MT: "RIVER BEND CASITA." • What an amazing place! I can't believe that we were able to find such a relaxing and peaceful place only two hours from our home in Albuquerque. I am embarrassed to say that I have lived in Albuquerque almost all of my life and have never visited Abiquiu - I would go on about the Casita, but I think all the wonderfulness has been covered in the other 37 comments. What an incredibly magical place. We had fun all day and then relaxed in the hot tub at night. Thank you Scott & Glynn - we will be back!

    • We stayed in this beautiful casita for a week the end of June, first part of July, 2009. It is everything you see on the website and more! Scott and Glynn have done a fantastic job in decorating it in southwestern style, but also with comfort. Like I mentioned in the journal I wrote in before we left, this is a magical place! How do you describe the fabulous views all around the casita with the mountains in the background? The sunrises and sunsets were spectacular, and on numerous occasions we got up in the middle of the night to look at the stars. They were incredible. One of my favorites was experiencing a double rainbow after a rain one day. You'd have to live under a rock not to appreciate the beauty of this place. There is lots to see and do here; we hiked Chimney Rock at Ghost Ranch, the Plaza Blanca formations next to the mosque; the Puye Cliff Dwellings were so interesting; a must see! Ojo Caliente Hot Springs is also fun to do. We took a day trip to Santa Fe and enjoyed the art galleries and shopping. Los Alamos is another great little town! If you want a place that is peaceful and relaxing, then this is it. You will absolutely love it!!!

    • Awesome place, the best cabin I have ever stayed. Nice view and the out door hot tub was extra fun. The owner (Scott) is a very nice person and don’t mind going an extra mile for you comfort. And the housekeeper Brenda is very nice and helpful too. I am already planning my next trip there. ….

    • 11pm. You are sitting in a soothing hot tub, drink in hand, under the darkest of skies. Yet the millions of stars that spill from every direction illuminate the ground like a new moon. Close your eyes and you can feel them: ancient light sliding softly over your skin. So far away and yet so tangible, they oversee The Great Silence that stretches across the desert night. Silence broken only by murmurs of the Eternal, carried on the breeze: "Peace. Be still. Welcome." This is the message everywhere you turn in and around the Casita. Wood stacked for your fires. Utensils for your cooking. A bed you won't want to leave. A secluded location with a commanding perspective. My wife and I visited for a week, having a "stay-cation" far from our Northeast home. We have no dining recommendations because we made all of our meals in the casita's well-appointed kitchen. Why go out when you can dine with a 360-degree view of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world? So we cooked, ate, soaked, felt the stars, watched the sun rise and set and viewed some of the excellent DVDs that Scott and Glynn have assembled. It's a wonderful place where all the creases and knots of urban Northeastern life were smoothed and loosened. We did venture out to see some of the sights. The mountain Pedernal presides over the landscape, so massive that it is more like a planet than a mountain, its gravity keeping the surrounding world in place. Plaza Blanca looks more like the moon than anything on earth. The rocks at Ghost Ranch are stunning, and walking the labyrinth there is a powerful experience. Echo amphitheatre is interesting and fun. If you really want an adventure, drive the 13 mi., cliff-hugging, rutted dirt road to Christ in the Desert Monastery. It is neither for the faint of heart nor the poor in faith. Never, ever consider driving it if it's wet. But it's worth the ride: mile after mile of rugged, untouched country, a sinuous, raging river, and breathtaking vistas at the top of each hairpin turn. If you're thinking of getting away, get to this Casita while you can. With a fabulous house, an amazing location and attentive owners (who also have good decorating sense), you can't go wrong.

    • We have rented dozens of vacation homes, and this one is by far the nicest one. Many have a great view, comfortable furniture, stylish decor, good location, well stocked kitchen or features like a hot tub or nice fireplace. This one has it all, and in addition, there is privacy without having to drive far off the grid. We have stayed here twice, and will be back. There is no more affordable, quality lodgings available.

    • We had the pleasure of staying in this beautiful casita from Sept. 19th to Sept. 22nd, which I must say was not long enough. The casita itself is so warm and cozy, the decor is wonderful and the extra amenities provided by Scott and Glynn are perfect. The view from this fabulous home is beyond description. We have tried to express in words the beauty of the landscape but have been unable to do it justice. We, too, hope that not too many people find out about this place as we intend to return and would be terribly disappointed if it was not available to us. We visited Ghost Ranch and made the hike to Chimney Rock - the most stunning views you can imagine. Relaxing in the hot tub under the stars after a long hike was a perfect way to end a perfect day. We wish to express our thanks to Scott and Glynn for allowing us to spend time in this wonderful, magical place. We are just sorry that we did not have the opportunity to meet them and thank them personally, maybe next time. It was an experience that will not be forgotten. Sincerely, Karen & Don, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

    • I didn't have the chance to write in the guestbook while I was there but I wanted to put a great review up for this place. My friend from work and I road triped up there and stayed for three nights. The views from the casita were amazing and it was extremely relaxing hanging out in the hot tub or just sitting out on back/front porch. One place I do have to recommend like crazy is Casa Blancas, it is an extremely easy hike and has some wonderful views! We were able to walk right up to it and have a picnic lunch by it. If you don't feel like leaving *totally understandable* try hiking down the big hill in the back. I went down there and found some dried up stream bed looking areas and it is a nice hike up. I took my dog and this is by far the most pet friendly place I have been too. She had a blast getting to hike around with us and even went swimming down at the lake. The casita was clean and was everything they said it was.

    • Just like the previous visitors I came with my sister. We stayed for 4 days and then went to Santa Fe missing the casita the entire time. I came here to paint but the need to paint dissolved as I watched the ever changing scenery in awe. The play of light and clouds changes the view of the mountains continuously. I did get some painting done on the second day. I can't say enough about our stay here. Beautiful, clean, quiet, a place for introspection. The hot tub is maintenance free - just remove the cover and enjoy! You'll be entranced by the 360 degree view. No wonder NM license plates say "land of enchantment". Scott and Glynn obviously put a lot of forethought and love into this place. We had the opportunity to spend some time with them and thoroughly enjoyed it. The casita is a beautiful house and well stocked. We slept soundly - the mattress was as comfortable as mine at home. We stopped at Trader Joes in Santa Fe on our way and did not have to make any emergency stops at the store for our entire stay. My plan is to bring my husband here for our anniversary in 2009. Thank you Scott and Glynn!! ~ Ria and Grea

    • my sister and I visited the Abiquiu Lake Casita the end of June and were amazed that such a place could be rented. Of course the calendar fills up quickly so getting the last 3 days that were available this summer must have been meant to be. I live in the foothills of Boulder which is beautiful, peacfull and magnificent but the Casita at Abiquiu made me very envious. We are still thinking about it. Our next three day stay in Santa Fe was very difficult to take because we longed to be back at Abiquiu. You really can't describe how magical the casita, surrounding buttes, sky, water and energy all come together in one amazing location. I hope you too can experience it one day. Thank you Scott for making our visit so memorable. Sincerely, Diana and Catherine
