Hale Ka Nani, which means “beautiful house” in Hawaiian, is situated on 3.3 acres in the private, gated community of Kohala Ranch on the beautiful Kohala "Gold" coast. Kohala Ranch is a large 4,000 acre secure/gated “working” ranch, approximately 45 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 75 miles from Hilo. It is the perfect place for enjoying Hawaii Island without the crowds and tourist traffic of the resorts and hotel areas. This spacious 700 square foot guest house or “ohana” has a kitchen, microwave, living/dining room, one bedroom with queen bed, and spacious bathroom with large shower, separate toilet, and twin vessel sinks. The home can accommodate two to four people with the pull out queen-sized wall bed in the living room. Hale Ka Nani is an attached guest house and has its own private entrance and parking area. This newly-built ohana was completed in March 2017. Tastefully decorated, and completely self-sufficient, it is a wonderful home for you to bask in the loveliness of Hawaii Island and feel what it is like to actually live on the island.
The spacious 700 square foot lanai has an outdoor eating table for four, gas grill, and comfortable lounge furniture for you to enjoy a mai tai while you watch the sun set in the center of your 180 degree ocean view. Your views include open ranch land, coastline, the islands of Maui, Koolawe, Molokini, and Lanai, and three volcanoes; Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and the often snowcapped Mauna Kea. The famous Kohala Coastline sunsets are an artist’s dream, painting the skies with pink, red, orange, yellow, and blue. On clear evenings you might see the famous "Green Flash" as the sun dips below the horizon or one of the numerous rainbows that arch over the ranch. At night, you can sit out on the lanai and star watch because the Big Island limits “light pollution” for star viewing by the telescopes on top of Mauna Kea.
Available by the night, week, or month, this one-bedroom unit is one of the best deals on the Big Island. This home does not have air conditioning, but is equipped with ceiling fans since air conditioning is not needed at this perfect elevation of approximately 1600 feet, making it 7-10 degrees cooler than on the coast. This area is dry and sunny with an average of 357 sunny days and an average of 7 inches of rain per year. The owners live in the main house on the property and will respect your privacy, but are close by should their assistance be needed.
Kawaihae Harbor, 15 minutes away, offers multiple dining opportunities including a local Tiki bar, perfect for happy hour or a fresh seafood dinner. There is a fresh fish market, a burger/taco restaurant, Italian cuisine and an ice cream parlor featuring Hawaii Shaved Ice. You can reserve and depart on a dive, snorkel, sport fishing or whale watch adventure from the harbor. The small, historic sugar plantation towns of Hawi and Kapa'au are approximately 20-35 minutes drive north of us. These are artist communities with great shops and quaint eateries. Look for the photography of Julie Eliason, one of the Hale Ka Nani owners, in the galleries.
At the north end of the highway is the famous Pololu Valley, which you can hike down to enjoy spectacular coastline views and a rugged beach. Waimea town is a short 25 minute drive where you can enjoy local farmers markets, shopping, a micro brewhaus, and several restaurants. Enjoy all of the beauty the Big Island has to offer and after a day of activity and sightseeing, return to relax and reflect at Hale Ka Nani, a perfect way to end the day.

About Bob & Julie
Bob Bojorquez and Julie Eliason. After retiring from our jobs in California, we moved to the Big Island in 2007 and took up new careers. Bob was formerly a computer science technician, help desk manager and project manager at Cal Poly State University, and took up real estate, property management, and web design in Hawaii. He is also a professional musician in the "Bad Papa" slack-blues duo. Julie was formerly a marine and wildlife biologist and now works as a professional landscape, nature, and fine art photographer, exhibiting her photographs in several Hawaii galleries. When we first visited Kohala Ranch we saw the magnificent ocean and mountain views from our future home and we knew this was the place for us. We also like the climate living in the Meadows at approximately 1600 foot elevation, which is not too hot or too cold. The gated community is wonderful and safe. We finished building our attached guest house or ohana in March of 2017. We are delighted to share this wonderful place with our family, friends, and guests.

Great and Gracious
We stayed for five days at this new, exceptionally well outfitted apartment, and experienced some wonderful sunsets, views across the western side of the island and its shorelines, and met our excellent and gracious hosts. Very private setting, quiet. There is a lot to do in this vicinity, from art galleries to magnificent snorkeling and sandy beaches.
Inviting views and relaxing island decor
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Bob and Julie's island retreat. We had some cool days keeping us in but lots of reading. Had everything we needed to cook meals and to take on our couple of beach outings. Great shower! We especially appreciated the owners' hospitality. They truly convey the "aloha" spirit.

Hale Ka Nani was our home for 28 days. We loved it! The ohana is very comfortable and well appointed, the views of the coast are fabulous and the neighborhood is very quiet. The elevation of about 1800' makes for pleasant temperatures and dramatic views. Hapuna Beach, one of the best beaches anywhere, is a short drive away. The owners, Bob and Julie, are very friendly and eager to be helpful. We certainly enjoyed our stay and hope to return.
The owners description and the comments from other reviewers tell it like it is. A great place to stay if you prefer being away from the crowded resorts and don't mind a little extra driving. For us, it was just about perfect!

The house is very comfortable with everything you could possible need, beautifully decorated, spotless new.
The view of both sea and Maunakea is stunning, awesome sunsets, and incredible starry nights. Yes it's true is a bit away from everything, about 15 min drive from Kawaihae harbour ( some or the best food of the Island) and about 25-30 minutes from some or the best beaches of the Kohala Coast, Hapuna beach, beach 69, Mauna Kea and Puako. For us it was not a big issue, we did explore the east side of Big Island very easily, every day a different spot.
The hosts Julie and Bob are super welcoming, always present and yet very descreet, they gave us a very detailed list of things to do, restaurants, shopping, activities. We cannot recommend this place enough, so glad we found it.

Beautiful Expansive Tranquil Brilliant
Guest house is graciously decorated, beautifully furnished and first rate in location. So peaceful in north Kohala with panoramic views of sunsets, Mauna Loa and
Maui.Close to whale watch and snorkel cruises. Secluded beaches and funky Ha'wi. Not too far to Mauna Kea. But Hale Ka Nani and owners Bob and Julie are the stars of this lovely spot.

Gorgeous property with stunning view and everything you need.
This is a beautifully decorated, very quiet, spacious, one bedroom, one bathroom attached unit with a private entrance, parking, and a large deck. There's a 180-degree view of the 3 main volcanoes, hills, the ocean, and coastline. Views of the Milky Way on a clear night are truly stunning.
The owners live in the attached home and are available as needed. They have attended to every detail required for a comfortable stay. The bed is very comfortable. I slept better here than I do at home. There's a full kitchen and washer dryer, which enabled us to prepare our own meals. The provided cooler came in handy for taking snacks and lunch with us for our day's adventures. We also enjoyed use of new snorkeling gear.
If you want a quiet vacation away from the tourist areas and crowds, this home is perfect!

Star gazing is amazing without light pollution. Ocean and beach activities are what Hawaii and the Big Island are all about. There is plenty of shopping in Kailua-Kona as well as many restaurants and movie theaters. The world famous Iron man triathalon is held here each year. The Tax rate of 13.42% is Hawaii's General Excise Tax of 4.166% and Hawaii's Transient Accommodations Tax of 9.25%.
