Cabin on bluff of Big Sioux River with rushing waters of the Klondike Dam below.

Overview

About the property

A 3 bedroom, 2 bath new cabin perched on a bluff, feet from the river below.

Watch the bountiful wildlife and the seasons change on the Big Sioux River while listening to the water flowing over the Klondike Dam. NEW to this property is a large 7 person hot tub, to enjoy nature while staying nice and warm.

Most of this home is constructed from reclaimed lumber from the 1900s. Much of the wood is Southern Yellow pine with the Great Room constructed from reclaimed 2 x 6s. The Great Room on the main level overlooks the Big Sioux River through 2 large windows and a sliding glass door to an expansive covered balcony. The cabinets were hand made for the home from reclaimed lumber but the granite countertops offer elegance as well.

The main floor has a full kitchen, one bedroom and one full bathroom. It also has a cozy gas heater. The dining area has a large table for family card games, or just relaxing with your morning coffee looking out the large windows.

The lower level is a walkout with nine foot ceilings that gives it an open feel. There is two bedrooms, a bath, and a family room with another cozy gas heater with remote thermostats. The entire lower level is completed in knotty pine with log style furniture to complement the rustic feel. It also offers a large TV, pull out queen sofa sleeper and electric recliners to enjoy a little down time watching that football game or movies or finish that great novel. There is a large log table here also to play cards, complete crossword puzzles, or enjoy a few snacks. There is also a laundry room with Samsung washer and dryer. This level has a door which leads to a large covered patio, landscaped yard, Weber grill and new hot tub! From here it is 50 yards from the river- but a very steep incline so left natural with trees, tall grass and wild flowers.

The exterior to this home resembles a rustic cabin in the woods but is far from rustic once you enter the front door and see the modern amenities. It is within one block of the historical Klondike dam site which now is closed to traffic, but offers a large bridge to fish from. Kayaks also enter and exit at this point for a beautiful experience down the Big Sioux River.

Fishing - Iowa or SD fishing license

Relaxing – you won’t need a sound machine or fan for white noise here. Just sleep with the windows open and hear the sound of the babbling waterfalls below.

History

The Klondike Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, and given the #75000696.

Little remains of the Klondike Mill except an old stone wall and a few artifacts from the historical structure. It is located on the Iowa side of the dam where a bridge spans the Big Sioux River, just beneath the public access parking area.

Kayak or Canoe

There is a loading/exiting area approx. one block from the house where one can take the scenic 3.5 mile ride to Canton or exit from the up-river trail from Sioux Falls. The Canton trek is rated as one of the best with steep canyon sidewalls.

Bird-Animal watch

Perfect area to just sit on the porch and watch. Bald Eagles and deer are a daily site in this area.

In addition, there is a wealth of animal life on the waters of small South Dakota lakes, rivers, and creeks, including geese, ducks, pelicans, great blue heron, egrets, hawks, owls, perching birds, deer, raccoons, and beaver. Eagles, fox, and coyote are also sometimes spotted.

Lake Pahoja Recreation Area

2.5 miles west on Highway 276 has something for everyone!

It is open year-round and offers a variety of recreation activities such as ice fishing, hunting, biking, bird watching, canoeing, frisbee golf, outdoor basketball court plus a whole lot more.

All of the facilities have been made handicapped accessible along with the 1 1/3 mile asphalt hiking/biking trail along the north shore. A 3 2/3 mile hiking trail encircles the lake for the nature and exercise enthusiasts.

At the northeast end of the lake there is a 350' x 100' swimming beach and an adjoining comfort station for those interested in a little sun and fun!

$5 daily fee.

Lake Alvin

Another nice family lake for fishing or kayaking in Harrisburg, SD.

Grand Falls Casino

7 miles (10 minutes) just up the road with great golfing, outdoor pool, spa services, gambling (of course) and dinner/drinks. Then come back home to the privacy and comfort of your sanctuary.

Area Weddings held at Canton Barn and Harrisburg's Meadow Barn. Great place for a wedding group to stay and play together.

Canton Calico Skies Vineyard and Winery - 8 minutes away through winding back country roads. Experience both their wines and gluten free ciders. Beautiful atmosphere!

Stensland Dairy farm one mile away. Tours and/or shopping!

Larchwood quaint corner bar/restaurant with amazing food and service. Also, newer Sports bar and grill across street from this.

About Mark and Vickie Reiff

My husband and I work full time. He is a home inspector and I'm a Certified Nurse Midwife at Sanford hospital. We love the outdoors. We like to fish, hike, bike, garden, camp and explore small towns for their local treasures in the summer. In the winter, we love to snowmobile, hike, ski and sit around a warm fireplace relaxing. This cabin offers all of this for us - and will be our retirement heaven. Until then - we decided to share our little treasure with everyone who enjoys these same activities.

Mark and Vickie Reiff purchased this house in 2017

Why Mark and Vickie Reiff chose Larchwood

We retired from the military after twenty years and settled down on an acreage in Sioux Falls, SD. We love Sioux Falls, but the city has completely grown all around us. After the city council approved a tall apartment building to be built along our property line - I started looking for a new home for us in the country. I saw this property listed on Craigslist - and thought it was a scam. I could not believe that there could be any home so rustic and beautifully built with 100 year old reclaimed barn wood that sat in front of a river, embracing nature, and yet so close to Sioux Falls. I was so surprised when I heard back from the realtor that this place was in fact not a scam, but a reality. We knew the minute that we saw it, that we had to have it.

Now we are excitingly finding the things to see and do in the area, and are constantly amazed at all the opportunities found.

What makes this house unique

This cabin is a perfect set up for staying in - relaxing, fishing, hiking, kayaking and spending quality time with those one loves. Yet it is also a perfect set up for going out. Within miles is the Grand Falls Casino, Canton wineries, the Canton Barn, Larchwood restaurants and bars, Golf courses and Lake Pahoja Recreation Area which is a great park for swimming, boating, paddle boarding, or playing Frisbee golf or basketball. We have enjoyed biking the country roads, and continue to be amazed at the beauty of the area.

Perfect Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 6 women celebrated a momentous milestone birthday at the cabin. Vickie did a wonderful job of being attentive to our every need! The cabin was very clean and beautifully decorated. We hiked along the Big Sioux River, took nature walks, relaxed in the hot tub, visited the nearby Calico Sky Winery, made use of the fire-pit on a mild December night, enjoyed the beautiful river and Klondike dam view, marveled at the bald eagles flying over the river, delighted in the sunrises and sunsets, relaxed and refreshed ourselves in order to return to the real world! It is a weekend we will always remember.

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My family rented this beautiful property on late July. It is located overlooking the Big Sioux River and surrounded by shade trees. You can hear the waterfalls from the outside deck and coffee in the morning delightful. The kitchen is quite modern and coffee available for you with some basics in the fridge. We cooked over the weekend and the only appliance we brought in was a slow cooker to warm premade food we brought in. Ice available in the freezer.

Two bedrooms downstairs and steps steep with dark stairway and no banister so someone difficult if mobility problems. Garage security box on the hidden side of garage. My sister in law got there first and found it difficult to locate. Recommend dropping luggage off at front door to carry in and then you don’t have as many steps to negotiate.

Dining room dark especially with the shade of the trees so that was also frustrating to our guests. No direct overhead lighting in this room which is unusual. All lighting is upward which is not helpful with high ceilings. However, overall this is a wonderful place to stay and with 6 of us staying it was very economical. We will stay here again! Thank you Vicki and Mark for being such wonderful hosts!

Little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a fun little getaway. Just sitting out on the deck and listening to the water was so tranquil. My friends that visited also love the place and said they would look at renting this place for family in the future.

Excellent property to take a quiet and relaxing family vacation.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very well taken care of very nice and comfortable. It had everything we needed for a family of 6. Everyone really enjoyed the hot tub in the evening and listening to the river. It is within 30 minutes to Sioux Falls which has a lot to do both for kids and adults. The only thing I would recommend is going to Lake Alvin for swimming. The little lake listed is full of tiny little leaches. Overall our experience was absolutely outstanding. Coming back to central ac after days out exploring in 90 degree heat was something our whole family appreciated as well. Definitely worth staying.

Beautiful Gem

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to extend our stay in the area while attending a wedding in Sioux Falls. We came upon this gem. It was perfect for our family of five adults. With a sitting area on the main floor and lower level, there was lots of room for everyone to relax. Had a good size dinning table for eating and playing board games together. The place is very clean with very comfortable beds. From either the main level deck or the walk out area one can listen to the soothing sounds of the river rapids and watch waterfowl playfulness. There is lots to do and see in the area for family and adults..We highly recommend this place. Thank you Vicki and Mark for your hospitality.

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Pictures and description was exactly what we experienced, very clean and well organized. Everything in house was well maintained and thought of. Picked this place to just relax and get away from the city. Fished in river from walking bank up to just below the house, believed from pictures that could walk down from house to river but it is way to steep. Very peacful on deck watching the river. No tv in master bedroom , so we slept in bedroom downstairs in bedroom with a tv for the news. First vrbo rental we have done. Hope they all go this smooth.
