No. 2 High Street, Newent – characterful Victorian house
No. 2 High Street is a deceptively spacious and characterful mid-Victorian townhouse in the heart of Newent – a charming market town on the edge of the Forest of Dean. Built around 1840 and formerly a shop until the early 2010s, the house has been thoughtfully converted into a private residence, retaining many original features while offering modern comforts. When not let, it’s our family’s holiday home, and we’ve furnished and equipped it with this in mind – from an air fryer to an Xbox – with plenty of extras to make your stay more enjoyable. Inside the House The entrance hall includes a shoe rack and coat hooks and leads into a bright living room with high ceilings, a large Victorian sash window, and two comfortable sofas – one of which converts into a double sofa bed. Behind the living room is the fully equipped kitchen with everything you might need. The dining table seats six as standard but can easily extend to seat eight, with two folding chairs from the adjoining utility room (which also houses the tumble dryer). The kitchen opens onto a sunny courtyard garden – a lovely afternoon sun trap – with outdoor furniture and a BBQ. Bikes can be wheeled through the house and securely stored in the enclosed courtyard. Bedrooms & Bathrooms Up the first flight of stairs is the large master bedroom with a king-size bed and two grand sash windows overlooking the High Street, alongside the main bathroom. The second floor houses a double bedroom and a twin room, where the Xbox is located. The twin room also has a compact en-suite shower and basin. Please note: the house is not suitable for guests with limited mobility, as all bedrooms are accessed via stairs. Location Newent is one of the most picturesque towns in the Forest of Dean, with over 100 Listed buildings and a rich history dating back to Roman times. It appears in the Domesday Book and includes many Tudor-era buildings. The house is a short walk from a great selection of independent shops, cafes, pubs and eateries. Newent Lake and Park – a peaceful green space with room for children and dogs to let off steam – is just across the road. There are plenty of local walks and cycling routes to explore, including the popular Newent Loop. The wider Forest of Dean is just a short drive away. Newent is conveniently located near the M50 (Junction 3), and a regular bus service runs to Gloucester, offering access to national rail links.
Free on-street parking is usually available about 30 metres from the house. A large council car park is also just a two-minute walk away.

Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re delighted you enjoyed the character and location of the property. You were a wonderful guest – thoughtful, respectful, and a pleasure to host. We’d be very happy to welcome you back anytime.
Clean, tidy, well-equipped, dog-friendly and in an excellent position for walking to the car park, cafes and shops. In addition there were lovely touches with decor and thoughtfulness with extra items to make your stay perfect. We were even welcomed with lamps on in each room - above 5 stars!

Thank you very much for your kind review. Very pleasing to read. And thank you for the immaculate condition you left our property!
This property was nicely situated within driving distance of a few attractions we intended to see in the area. The 3 floors of living space were nice to spread out a family of 6. The living room was cozy and it was nice to have a washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher to make us feel more at home. The kitchen was difficult to accommodate our family; while there was a big dining table it took up a good amount of floor space and left little room to get around. There was plenty of parking in the nearby car park, with a small fee. Overall it felt safe and comfortable.
