About this property

Bertie's Cottage, East Sussex

Sitting on the edge of the charming village of Robertsbridge in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is Bertie's Cottage, a beautiful Grade II-listed cottage dating back to the early 1700s. The cottage is brimming with character and original features such as exposed brickwork, oak beams, leaded windows, braces, pegs and joints. Outside is the most delightful cottage garden planted with roses, lavender and winter honeysuckle, perfect for morning coffee in the Summer months. The ground floor has beautiful flagstone flooring throughout. The sitting room exudes warmth and character with original oak beams, thoughtful traditional furnishings and soft, muted Farrow and Ball tones. A wood-burning stove sits in an exposed brick fireplace and hearth, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere in the cooler months. Through to the country-style kitchen and dining room with painted cabinetry, brass fixtures, oak worktops and a deep Belfast sink with a view of the garden. Upstairs, you'll find two charming bedrooms; a double and a twin and the bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. The cottage is ideally located for some of the best cycling routes in the High Weald and is only a 15 minute walk from Robertsbridge station where trains run directly to London Charing Cross in just over an hour. Walk along the Sussex Border Path, take a day trip to Bodiam Castle or explore the famous gardens of Sissinghurst and Great Dixter. Foodies will love the array of eateries nearby, from vineyard lunches at Tillingham to seasonal dishes at Michelin Star rated Small Holding Kilndown. Coastal towns of Hastings and Rye are also an easy drive away, making this location an ideal base for walkers, and anyone seeking a relaxing break in the countryside.

Overall a lovely stay

We had a cozy stay at Bertie Cottage. Lovely feel with the fireplace too. The cottage was well equipped. Arrival was a bit unclear, it would be helpful to have the name of the cottage on the back gate, as we arrived late afternoon and it was already dark. The pictures sent beforehand of the street were blurry and unclear (in the end a neighbor needed to help us find it and even she found it difficult to define which it was). The floors squeak a lot and you literally can hear the neighbors talk, but that’s the vibe of an old house. I’d probably get a bit more comfier bed that doesn’t make a sound if you turn considering it all. Overall we had a lovely stay and if you take the above into account I would recommend it to others.

Elegant cosy cottage

We had a lovely three night stay with our young son - it was a really calm, elegant space and the log burner was absolutely perfect on the colder nights. The lovely Piglet bedding was gorgeous and made it super cosy. We were so close to lots of great places, including a few mins drive from Bodiam Castle and a great farm shop (eggs and apples) for supplies, so it was a brilliant base for exploring. I’d recommend parents bring a pop up blackout blind if possible for the children’s room as the curtains in both bedrooms are almost sheer. Do take note of the instructions when you arrive: you need to enter through the back door which acts as the front door during your stay. The front door stays locked. That confused us when we arrived!
