Neighbourhood

Literary Neighbourhood.

Context and essence of the neighbourhood

The Cortes neighbourhood, popularly known as the Literary Neighbourhood, where great figures of the Golden Age such as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo or Calderón lived. This area, delimited by the Puerta del Sol, Atocha Street and the Paseo del Prado, mixes literary history, bohemian atmosphere, cultural life and constant animation

Points of interest on Cervantes Street

•Lope de Vega House Museum (Cervantes 11): museum dedicated to the great playwright, with original 16th-century furniture and cultural activities such as children's theatre cycles in its garden and outdoor cinema in summer

•At number 2 was the house where Miguel de Cervantes lived and died; today a plaque remembers that historic place

Bars and gastronomy

In the vicinity there are numerous traditional bars and taverns:

•Cervantes Brewery (Jesus Square, nearby): classic establishment since 1983 where they serve well-poured beer and traditional tapas (broken eggs, croquettes, octopus...)

•Bars like Los Gatos and Fever are a few steps away on Jesus and Moratín Street, with a young and varied atmosphere

•High-level tapas throughout the neighbourhood: establishments like Triciclo, Moratín Bistrot, Vi Cool or El Barril de las Letras (on Cervantes Street) stand out for their creative cuisine and select wines

Leisure and culture

3-5 minutes walking from Cervantes 8 you will find:

•Spanish Theatre in Santa Ana Square, with over five centuries of history since the old comedy courtyard

•Comedy rooms like El Golfo, modern clubs like RockNRolla or Qué movida! in nearby streets (Huertas, Costanilla)

•The Ateneo de Madrid (Prado Street), an artistic and literary centre open since 1820. The Frogs Market celebration is also common, street cultural events with music and theatre that enliven the neighbourhood on several weekends of the year

Transport and mobility

•Nearest stations: Sol (metro lines 1,2,3 and Cercanías C3/C4), Antón Martín, Neptuno and Carrera de San Jerónimo about 4-6 minutes walking from Cervantes 8

•Numerous day and night bus lines (e.g. 001, 6, 14, 26,28, 32, 34, 37 and several N-) bring you closer to the rest of Madrid

•BiciMAD stations less than 300 m for public bicycles

Suggested route

An ideal walk from Cervantes 8 could include:

1.Go up Cervantes Street to visit the Lope de Vega House Museum.

2.Arrive at the marked location of Cervantes' house.

3.Continue towards Huertas Street with literary quotes engraved on the ground.

4.Walk through Santa Ana Square to have tapas or have a drink.

5.End at the Spanish Theatre or enjoy a vermouth on a terrace with history

Horrible sewer smell. Impossible to stay here as the sewer gas coming from the bathroom fills the entire space. Uninhabitable
