Javelina Hideout is a multi-dwelling retreat located on 10 breathtaking acres, built by two people who have a history with the area and are passionate about outdoor activities and environmentally conscious living. Newly constructed in 2017, it is an eco-friendly, off-grid desert home that blends in beautifully with the stunning desert scenery. It is the perfect place to enjoy a post hike cocktail at the sunset bar, roast marshmallows, dine under the 480 square foot covered porch of the main house, swing under the private porch of the bunk house, or kick back in your hammock and watch the stars come out to play with the milky way.
The main house (768 sq. ft.) features a full kitchen and open concept dining and living area. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, gas range, and a full sized refrigerator, but there is no dishwasher. Pots, pans and dishware are provided for your convenience. There is no coffeemaker due to the limitations of solar electricity, but the stove will boil water in the tea kettle very quickly and a french press is provided for your morning coffee. Propane wall heaters are offered in the main house and the bunkhouse..
The master bedroom has a large east facing window to view the spectacular colors of the sunrise from bed. The room has a new king sized memory foam mattress with high end bedding, reading lamps, outlet with USB for phone charging, an air conditioner, ceiling fan, and a beautiful wood wall to frame your views through the high south facing windows. Due to the constraints of solar arrays, the AC can only be run while the sun is up. It will cool the house off sufficiently in the summer, and night time temperatures in the desert drop enough that it isn't needed overnight. There is a comfortable memory foam rollaway TwinXL bed that can be used in the living room.
The separate bunkhouse (140 sq. ft.) is available for use with any booking, however extra cleaning fees apply. For parties above 3, the cleaning fee is a mandatory charge since the main house will only accommodate 3 people. The bunkhouse is ideal for guests wanting a little extra quiet and solitude away from the main house. It has 2 TwinXL bunks equipped with their own reading lamps and outlets with USB for phone charging. Each bunk has screened, sliding windows at the head and foot of the bed for a nice cross breeze and views of the stars. It is not air conditioned, but does have a wall mount oscillating fan and a propane wall heater. It is passively designed for comfortable sleeping throughout most of the year. There is an outdoor sink and 2 burner camp stove under the large private shaded porch, so guests can prepare coffee and meals at the bunkhouse.
When the weather is too nice to be indoors, you can cook outside on the charcoal park grill (please bring your own charcoal) or the propane grill. The main house has a large outdoor cooking station with a recycling center, and a bar for viewing the sunset. In inclement weather, fast Wi-Fi allows for streaming of movies on the wall mounted TV through your Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime account.
Enjoy an evening campfire around the fire pit out front (please bring your own firewood), or during a burn ban use the gas fire pit located in the seating area out back.
The Hideout is thoughtfully and sustainably designed to maximize comfort and enjoyment while minimizing the environmental impact. It includes design elements to keep you comfortable throughout the year, such as passive solar design, solar power, and rain water harvesting.
*** Special request of our guests: ***
We do ask that our guests not use more than 10 gallons of rainwater per day / per person to conserve our most valuable and precious resource in the desert - our water!
Please do not bring or use any electrical appliances that heat up - such as a blow dryer, curling iron, crock pot, coffee maker, flood lights etc... These appliances will drain the solar battery bank and can possibly damage the system. Please conserve energy the same way you conserve water.
This VRBO partner has demonstrated and is committed to fast response times, the best rates, and a great guest experience.
We absolutely loved our stay at a Javelina Hideout. Everything was just as described! The kids loved staying in the bunkhouse, we all enjoyed the sunset bar, and took advantage of the outdoor kitchen for a great fajita dinner on the porch. The house is very well designed and the owners have literally thought of everything (right down to providing a WiFi portable speaker so that you can have a soundtrack to your sunset viewing and stargazing). While we primarily used the house as a home base for our stay (as we spent most of our time hitting just about every point of interest in Big Bend), it would have also been great to have just relaxed at the house for a few days. Thank you for an incredibly memorable stay!
You guys. Seriously. This place is amazing!
We drove from Dallas/Austin to get away from the city and slow down. Our lives are hectic, and Javelina Hideout gave us a great balance of being off the grid, while still having the comforts of a fancy hotel.
We brought our hammocks and watched the wildlife, sunsets and bands of the Milky Way roll past. The full kitchen with gas stove allowed us to cook a nice dinner. The gas fire pit made for a lovely place to sit and tell stories. The firm, comfortable bed was perfect for resting after long hikes or long afternoons of lounging. The house is gorgeous and laid out perfectly, and the timer in the shower is genius!
We were close enough to Terlingua and Big Bend National Park that we could go hiking or eat at the Starlight Theater, but still felt off the grid.
Overall it was a beautiful place to stay! Can’t say enough great things! 😀
Javelina Hideout (JH) was a great place to stay and enjoy Big Bend with numerous dual-sport riding opportunities nearby. The modern design, finishes and furniture were an oasis in the Big Bend desert and was a great place to relax after a long day of trail riding. JH offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains with an off-the-grid experience that doesn't disappoint. The internet speeds were great allowing quick access to information as well as streaming movies at night.
Javelina Hideout is one of the coolest places you can stay. The owners have thought through every modern comfort, convenience and practicality while still creating a highly sustainable home. Great views, great friends, and a wonderful exploration of sustainable living. No other place like it!
The moment I arrived here my blood pressure dropped! It is so quiet, peaceful, and beautiful! This place is rustic, but modern and so clean and welcoming. They have thought of everything. There is a gas fire pit and a wood burning fire pit. There is also an outhouse or a flush toilet. The beds are super comfortable and you can watch the sunrise from the master bedroom. There is also a bar where you can sit and watch stunning sunsets. No light pollution so the star viewing is unbelievable! We saw numerous shooting stars! This was an amazing experience and we will definitely return and will be recommending Javelina Hideout to all our friends.
very impressed by the house and the incredible views, beautiful sunrises looking out the bedroom window and awesome sunsets sitting on the front porch, kitchen was well stocked
we enjoyed our stay and will be back, close to BBNP, Terlingua Ghost town and we drove along the Rio Grande to visit Fort Leaton. we really enjoyed the quiet and peaceful surroundings, will definitely recommend this place to everyone
