Perfect location near Big Bend National Park

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this gorgeous location near Big Bend. The property manager Janet Eby was responsive, and our family (including our dog) really enjoyed our stay here. We would definitely stay again.

Perfect retreat for a West Texas get away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay at the Rancho Mula Oso. It was close enough to Big Bend National Park that we had easy access but didn't have to fight with the holiday season crowds in the Chisos basin. The house had all the amenities of home, the showers were great, and the front and back porch gave us an opportunity to relax and enjoy the fantastic views of the landscape and the stars at night. This is the second property that we have rented that was managed by Janet Eby. She does a great job ensuring the unit is clean and well-stocked with everything needed for a stay away from home. We highly recommend her management properties and the Rancho Mula Oso. We will be coming back!

Loved it.

Great little home! Everything was as promised. Stayed there for 4 nights while we drove in and out of Big Bend each day (takes about 20 minutes to get to park entrance). Great fire pit, great view of the stars, would highly recommend anyone looking for a relaxing place to stay while exploring big bend.

Fantastic gathering place close to Big Bend

  • 5 of 5

As others have said this property is extremely well stocked. Aside from big groceries for Thanksgiving we headed straight to the property and almost everything else we needed was already there. We made an entire Thanksgiving dinner for a family of 16 and there was plenty of seating between the fold up table and chairs in the closet and the multiple outside seating areas (4 chairs and table on back deck, 8 and 2 tables on front deck plus firepit tables and chairs plus some beach chairs in the covered garage). The property managers Daryl and Janet were beyond fantastic - great communication, proactive, in fact we got this rental at the last minute because someone else had cancelled and I had asked them to keep us in mind and they did exactly that and we were very very thankful they did - this really made our trip! The other half of our group stayed at a motel just 6 miles down the road in Study Butte and they spent most of their time at this house with us, only going back there to sleep. :)

The kids and dads loved climbing the rock ridges behind the house and wandering the property in search of wildlife (saw quail, gray fox, tarantula, rabbit) and we spent our nights around the firepit. We bought firewood in Alpine but at the property they have a huge stack you can buy for $2 per piece. We made smores, stargazed with our telescope (fantastic viewing) and felt like the only people in the world.

The house was decorated with tons of rocks and artifacts that the whole family found interesting and there were lots of movies and books that our group took advantage of (hubs finally finished Casablanca on this trip!). Master bathroom is huge, plenty of towels and toiletries provided and we lacked for nothing in the kitchen and like I said, we made an entire Thanksgiving meal for 16. The oven is a little smaller than a full sized oven so we had to get a little creative but it had multiple racks and we can't do everything in one oven at home on Thanksgiving either! :)

Master is on right side of living/kitchen (facing house) and other two bedrooms are on the left with the second bathroom. Bunkhouse is a trailer parked right alongside the house on the left side (again facing house). We had a group of 10 staying at the house and everyone was comfortable, slept well and felt like they had enough room. We would definitely stay here again and will recommend this property to our friends and family.

Fantastic stay as always

Perfect place to come back to after hiking all day at Big Bend. We stayed here years ago a couple of times, tried another place last year, and won’t do that again, will continue to come back and share this special place with friends and family. Thank you.

About Janet Eby

I have been retired for a number of years and wanted a place in the Big Bend since 1971 when I first visited at the age of 18. We purchased the property our home now sets on in 1981 and put up the house in 2007. We spend our time between our main home in Katy, TX, our sons home in San Marcos and out here. I love it out here in the Texas Outback. So peaceful, so calm.

Janet Eby purchased this house in 2007

Why Janet Eby chose Terlingua

This home site was selected from hundreds of acres and several other possible home sites to take advantage of the marvelous views, abundant wildlife, beautiful desert plants, easy road access, and privacy.

What makes this house unique

This house provides a perfect escape from the stresses of modern life, but is close enough to the highway and Terlingua to avoid being cut off from society.
