About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + 1.5 baths (sleeps 4)

Enjoy the beauty of Bucks County while sleeping in the oldest home in New Hope. It is a Historic landmark, located on the banks of the Delaware River. Located right in town, so you can walk anywhere in New Hope, or cross the bridge and you're in Lambertville, NJ.

The house has all the charm of the 1700's, but has been updated for your enjoyment. There are fireplaces in both bedrooms, as well as the family room and living room.

The house is a perfect "get away" for a long weekend or vacation lasting weeks. The house works well for four people, but you can put the fifth on the sofa bed in the family room.

Each of the bedrooms have comfortable bed with views to the river. The family room has the "Lazyboy" for those afternoons of just lazying around and enjoying the sounds of the river.

You are a 20 minute ride to Princeton, and New York City is a little over an hour away by train. But remember, you do not have to leave the area. New Hope and Lambertville have numerous antique stores and of course the famous flea markets. There are many charming restaurants that you can walk to and the walking trails are just at the end of the block..

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. You are definitely in the heart of New Hope!!!

Old world charm meets some modern conveniences. If you’ve ever wanted to stay in an 18th century house this 274 year old home will be right up your alley. It has all the amenities of the 21st century, indoor plumbing, kitchen, heat, with all the charm of an old stone home. My family loved our stay and the owners couldn’t have been more helpful and a pleasure to work with. We will definitely consider returning.

Special Charm

  • 5 of 5

New Hope is an absolutely adorable and charming town. Gorgeous surroundings. This Historic house is equally as adorable and charming! It sits right on the main street with a lovely canal running through the back yard along with stunning views of the Delaware river... completed with the peaceful sound of falling water. Located smack in the middle of darling shops, restaurants and small town action!..Yet... Surprisingly the house is very quiet inside, other than the delightful creeks of the beautiful old large plank floors, I suppose due to the wonderful thick stone walls. The house is chock full of lovely antiques and historic memorabilia giving you the feel of going back in time. The house has everything you might need! Tiny kitchen and baths, comfortable beds and seating, wi fi, TVs, charming fireplaces in almost every room. Warm and cozy all around! Right out of a Norman Rockwell painting! Barbra is a fantastic host and available. Clearly sharing her family and nostalgic interests in every property! Thank you for sharing this special property!

In a word -- perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This lovely, impeccably maintained home was perfect for my last minute vacation in New Hope. Rich in history, and perfectly located -- I think we took the car out of the provided parkng spot, twice all week -- this house has magic. Beautiful walking/bike paths (smelling of honeysuckle and teeming with wildlife) along the canal are steps away, or you can wak over the bridge to Lambertville and enjoy the State park paths along the canal and railroad. The best restaurants shopping, and everything you need are just steps away -- Perfect. PS Not sure what the reviewer below meant, but their is nothing offensive at all in the interesting period items that appear throughout the the house.

Inappropriate is an understatement

This house was lovely, clean, well-located and the owners were very helpful. There were, however, some major problems. The house is full of antiques and vintage items. On display in the kitchen are at least 5 objects with demeaning caricatures of Black women and men. There was a new dishtowel with a caricature of a little girl with exaggerated features eating watermelon, intended for guest use. In the dining room hung three framed pictures depicting Black people in subservient or clownish poses: a magazine cover from the 1920s and two Cream of Wheat advertisements. There was a can of makeup (with a terrible cartoon face on the tin) in the desk where guests are instructed to find necessary items. Unfortunately, my 5 year old goddaughter came across the makeup and asked what it was. I cannot specify here exactly what type of makeup it was. The words "southern minstrel" will have to do.

Some (not all) of these items might be tolerable in a different context. But in this house, the way they were either prominently displayed or casually kept around, they created an environment that we found offensive.

Owner's Response: First of all, I would never want to insult or offend anyone. The Van Sant house is an historic home. We have taken the time to decorate the house with antiques from the 1800 and 1900’s —all found in the area around New Hope. “Black memorabilia” is from that era and is very collectible. There are many other collections of antiques in the house too. Regarding the pictures in the dining room. They are cover photographs from a major magazine as well as advertisement’s from other magazines of that era. The hand towel is an “art object”. It is not intended to be used and I hope it was not. It is hanging on the back wall of the kitchen. The make up was in an antique desk drawer – it is not on display. It is not out for guests to see. Guests are told that there is a spare key in that desk--it is easy to see and there is no need to go through the drawers. I do not know why a 5-year-old child would be going through my antique desk. Again, it is not my intent to offend anyone and I am sorry if I did---I just feel that this is part of our history. Barbara

Early American charm with perfect locale

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been coming to New Hope for the holidays for many years. Have enjoyed all of our weekends in various B&Bs and VRBOs. We've added several friends to our annual trek. The Van Sant is perfect for those additional folks. It is in the greatest location, very comfortable and cozy inside. Thank you Barbara for sharing your lovely home. We look forward to our years to come!
