Beautiful Old Merchant's House in Historic Central Edinburgh

Bedrooms 2
Space 914 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

Our Gayfield Square apartment is our fabulous two bedroom property situated in a fantastic position, right in the heart of our wonderful historic city. In fact you couldn't get better - the apartment is located on a beautiful leafy square in the elegant Georgian New Town. Residential and quiet, yet just a few minutes walk (about seven) from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street and George Street and from there easily accessible to the castle and Royal Mile. Moreover, we're just round the corner from the funky Broughton Street area with its great selection of restaurants, cafes and bars as well as some lovely 'local' and quirky shops (the best butcher in town, great health food store and fishmonger to name a few!)

The apartment is typical in design for its era, dating back as far as 1820, and built with the grandeur that represents Georgian architecture in its prime. It's also quite a one off with its own private entrance, private front garden and back patio (very unusual for a property in such a central location of Edinburgh). The entire apartment is on the ground floor with only one step up into the front garden so is very accessible for those who have difficulty in managing stairs.

Interior style is sophisticated, contemporary and calming with a lovely blend of old and new.

The main sitting room is a very spacious 16 x 13 feet with beautiful working fireplace (living flame gas fire), ornate cornice work and double windows with views to the front gardens and square beyond. Furniture comprises a comfortable sofa and contemporary Barcelona chair both in white leather as well as two antique gilt chairs upholstered in a bold print motif. Original art pieces hang on the walls throughout the property.

The bedrooms are quietly located with cosy European king sized leather bed in one and white wooden Georgian style bed in the other, again European king sized. Wall coverings are in calming taupe and pale mocca colours.

One bedroom is serviced by an en suite shower room with walk in shower with chocolate leather effect tiling. The other is serviced by the main bathroom with corner bath and shower.

The kitchen is fully equipped - a large range cooker/oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer - a great cook's kitchen as well as being a very sociable space to sit round the large black granite kitchen table whilst you eat or watch the cook at work! French windows from the kitchen open up to the back patio/sitting area.

We also supply a complete pack in the apartment which will guide you through how to use everything and also a great guide to our favourite restaurants, cafes, shops and top tips on things not to miss out on while you're visiting. Wifi internet access is available throughout the apartment.

We think we've created the ideal retreat to explore our wonderful city- we really hope you'll agree if you come and stay with us!

About Robin Jack

Hi- I'm Robin (pictured here with my best friend, Vera, my miniature schnoodle). I've lived in Edinburgh for more than 20 years, having moved here to study and then working in marketing for a number of years before buying a guest house and rental apartments. My Gayfield Square apartment is my pride and joy!- having bought it and renovated it to the style and standard it is today- I'm sure you'll love staying there!

Robin Jack purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Robin Jack chose New Town

Edinburgh is a fantastic city- historical, vibrant and sophisticated. The apartment is located in one of the most beautiful and central parts of town, the Georgian New town. Built around the 1800s the architecture of this area is beautiful and grand, yet the apartment is only a short walk from the bustling centre of town, all the attractions and some great places to eat and drink.

What makes this apartment unique

Culture, art, history and a lovely quiet- you'll live on a wide leafy square inhabited by locals which is a stones throw from the bustling Broughton Street area with its great cafes, restaurants and local shops (a great butcher and fishmonger are just round the corner). And only a 7 minute walk from Princes Street too!

Fantastic house. Perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 amazing days at this house. The owners were welcoming and made sure our stay was comfortable and had everything we needed. You can tell they put a lot of care into this house. It's the perfect location to quickly walk to the great local sites within old and new town. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back next year.

Lovely Neighbourhood Flat Close to Sights

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I enjoyed our stay immensely at Robin's first floor flat. We only stayed for four nights but felt more at home with every passing day - we wished we could've stayed much longer. The street was very quiet but just walk to the top of the street and round the corner were restaurants, bars, theatre, etc. A little further walk (10 minutes or so) takes you to Princes Street and from there it is easy to explore the sights of the Royal Mile or the New Town.

The apartment was clean, well appointed and the beds very comfortable with lovely linens. We both slept very well.

This would be the perfect home away from home when visiting Edinburgh but I would recommend a one week visit or more - there is so much to see in this great city!

The neighbourhood and all of the Edinburgh that we toured were very safe. An added bonus for us as two female travellers was the Merchant House being next door to a police station. We did enjoy returning to the flat every evening and walking past one or two police cars parked along our very residential street and sometimes in front of our gate. We heard no extra noise being so close to the station whether we were inside or outside the house.

Thank you Robin for opening your home and also for the lovely welcoming gift on arrival!

Beautiful apartment... Great location

  • 5 of 5

We are 2 couples that stayed at this apartment February 2018. It is spacious, clean, safe, well-equipped, and beautifully decorated. Robin's (owner) attention to detail and design is unsurpassed. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is included, and we were welcomed with a nice bottle of Prosecco (a lovely surprise). Robin also included a comprehensive booklet with all necessary info on how to operate all appliances, and a guide to restaurants, which were spot-on. It is within walking distance to many fabulous restaurants and small convenience stores. We used Rabbie's Tour Operator for 3 separate day-trips to The Highlands, Whiskey Tour, and St. Andrew's and Fife. Rabbie's is within a 15 minute walk. We also toured Edinburgh's Castle, The Royal Mile, and we took an underground Ghost Walk (ask for Simon if you can). I can't say enough good things about the warm and hospitable folks of Scotland. Do not hesitate to book this wonderful apartment (home)!

Beautiful apartment close to restaurants & city attractions

  • 4 of 5

Love the kitchen!! The Living room is delightful. The garden front yard was lovely. Master Bath is tiny, but efficient. Hall bath a bit larger. Bedrooms have king beds and LOTS of closet space.

Grateful for the washer/dryer in the unit.

Loved being able to walk 1 block to a large variety of restaurants and nearby bank & grocery store. Making the booking was very easy and Robin was a joy to work with. He followed up beautifully. The 3-ring binder in the apartment is full of wonderful information about the unit and the area.

The only downside for us was no designated parking. With the police station next door and the park across the street, it was an adventure trying to park every day. We found that if we arrived back at the apartment a few minutes before free parking starts at 5:30 pm (thru 8:30 am), we could generally find a space within a block. Also, we signed up for the parking meter app on our phone so we could easily manage parking fees.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you loved the apartment so much and had a great stay in the city. I am sorry that since you brought a car, that parking near the apartment was a niggle. We do make it clear that the apartment does not come with a parking space on our web listing but I am sorry if this is something you feel you could have benefited from elsewhere and would have made some other suggestions for you had you alerted me to this before you booked. Nonetheless I am glad this didn't diminish your enjoyment at the apartment and look forward to welcoming you with us again.
