About Nancy and EJ

We are architects and commercial construction project managers that love to build wonderful spaces worldwide for living, working, and playing. We have a small dog, Pest, that we travel with extensively, and we thoroughly enjoy sharing the magic we create with others.

Nancy and EJ purchased this estate in 2004

Why Nancy and EJ chose Central Coast

Nancy purchased the property to bring her parents out to California to be closer to family, as they are disabled and in their 90s. She wanted to provide them with a beautiful way to spend their golden years. It was the perfect property to accommodate their disabilities in style,. The property was converted to a vacation rental in 2008, and due to it's location in one of the most stunning and rare forests in the world, and yet close to international airports, it has been a resounding success from the first year, with guests arriving from all corners of the globe. We enjoy sharing the comfort and amenities of this estate with others, and can offer recommendations on how to make our guest's stay much more than just a place to sleep.

What makes this estate unique

The property is truly a destination in itself, as it affords the opportunity to swim, sunbath, soak in the therapeutic spa, hike in the redwood forest, find quiet spots to sit and reflect or read a good book, cook gourmet meals with friends and family, sit under the stars in front of the outdoor fireplace, be entertained watching hundreds of movies in a surround sound environment, have some friendly competition playing horseshoes and ping-pong, and working out on a private deck with exercise bike to keep in shape, without leaving the property. We had Nancy's family reunion with a full house of family members from all over the US, and everyone had the time of their lives. These was plenty of space.... room to gather together, and intimate areas to get away from the crowd. The children were able to have 2 fenced/gated acres to play without the parents worrying that they would be lost in the forest, and they loved the sturdy climbing structure 'fort' with swings! I'm grateful to be able to share the property with my guests, so they can discover the serenity and magic we experience at this unique property.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a piece of paradise! Rising with the fog covering the mountain tops. Nightly soaks in the spa gazing at the stars. Smelling clean, clear redwood air. This home is a sanctury and we have received so much nurturing, inspiration, and fun here. Thank you for creating this lovely space for us to retreat and create peace. You went above and beyond to make our stay as seamless, comfortable, and relaxing as we could have imagined. This home is truely a haven for the soul.

You'll Never Want to Leave

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend Huckleberry Woods Escape to anyone looking for a house (estate, really) that's a destination within itself. George does a great job providing pictures and content to describe the property...but somehow it was even more fantastic in person. It was the perfect location for several families with children, because it's literally like three houses in one. You have the main floor, the three bedrooms with a seperate family room and kitchen downstairs, and then the private carriage house. We had five families onsite, and everyone was pleased with their accommodations.

It's obvious that the property is well-loved. It's truly like getting to stay in someone's fabulous house while they are away on vacation. In fact, the owners gave us a tour and a gift basket upon our arrival. It was easy to plan activities with their recommendations (golf, hiking, surfing, dinner out).

The amazing deck with fireplace, the treehouse, the fabulous pool and spa...I'm ready to book for next year just writing this review.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the love that Brooke's group gave back to Huckleberry Woods Escape, and would welcome them back at any time. The photos that they sent us of their group on the deck and the children's Tree House Club rules made our day. We pride ourselves in providing the little extra touches that make this vacation home a unique and special experience, and are looking for groups that can appreciate the finer things in life in a fun, comfortable, and environmentally friendly setting. Thanks Brooke for showcasing that so well! Note from Nancy 2012: While George passed shortly after Brooke's family visited in 2009, we have continued on in the same tradition, continuously improving and adding to the magic of the property, and have erected a redwood bear on the property in George's memory. The Carriage House is now my private residence, close enough for my guests to get any assistance they need, and separate enough that some groups never see us at all during their stay.

Wonderful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The house and property were beautifully maintained, and fit our group of 4 families perfectly. Nancy and EJ were wonderful hosts, very flexible and accommodating with check out times. They even came to the rescue providing solutions to last minute requests. We had a wonderful stay; the property was a delight for kids and adults alike. Recommended to anyone seeking a relaxing getaway among the redwoods.

Owner's Response: Veronica's group was a pleasure to host at Huckleberry Woods Escape. We find that the main demographic that we cater to, family groups like Veronica's, appreciate having us on-site but "out of sight", to help them with an little thing they need to make their vacation more enjoyable. We can direct them with shopping recommendations, quick repairs, and suggestions on places to visit, to name a few. It provides a feeling of security to know that they can immediately get help without hassle. We find that guests that have not thoroughly read our listing, and are not happy with having us near, are usually groups that want to have loud parties, and these guests are never invited back.

Excellent house for a large crowd

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with the house and facilities. The dining room table easily accommodated our eleven people, and the kitchen was a treat with lots of space and high-end appliances. The kids were thrilled with the play area. Several of us enjoyed the hot tub. The area is heavily wooded, and we saw the local family of deer a couple of times. The location was convenient to the Monterey Aquarium and a train into the redwoods, so we took advantage of those. The owners of the house were approachable and lived right next door, so they were available for any questions we came up with. We would recommend this enthusiastically to other renters.

Owner's Response: We find that our best groups, like Sue's family, appreciate that we are available to them, as we can recommend local stores and restaurants, answer questions about the history and ecology of our pristine redwood forest, make quick repairs, and service the pool and spa daily. We go out of our way to accommodate our guests special needs, while still allowing them privacy.

One of a kind

  • 5 of 5

Nancy and EJ were great! Very flexible with check in times, gave us a tour when we checked in and another one the next day because we checked in late. The property is incredibly maintained with a huge deck complete with plenty of seating, a grill, and fire pit. Great for groups of 10-14. Highly recommend!

A perfect place for an Anniversary celebration!

  • 5 of 5

My sisters, husband, brother in law and I booked Huckleberry Woods Escape to celebrate our parents 50th wedding anniversary together! There were 13 of us total, and 6 of those were kids ages 10 and under! We couldn't have asked for a better place to spend time together as family celebrating what our parents created! The house was leaps and bounds more amazing then we expected! The kitchen was big enough for many of us to be in it at the same time. The bedrooms wonderfully placed and set up to accommodate all of us. The outdoors were beautifully maintained. The views are BREATH TAKING! Nancy and EJ are amazing hosts who made themselves available to us for whatever we may need, something that none of us had ever experienced before with rental property owners. They also had a welcome basket for us with local treats and goodies as well as champagne and sparkling cider to celebrate my parents anniversary! This was seriously one of the best family vacations we've had as family!! I highly recommend this property and I know I'm planning on booking again in the near future!! None of us, including the kids, wanted to leave!! Thanks again for everything Nancy and EJ!!

Owner's Response: Celebrating life's important milestones is one of the reasons we designed Huckleberry Woods Escape as a sanctuary for family and friends to bond, play, and relax in a private and magical environment. We have been blessed to see stressed-out lives become calm and joyous, and to help families recognize and honor the commitment and devotion that created them. We also wholeheartedly appreciate the recognition we receive for the hard work we put in to nurture and maintain such a unique property. That drive comes from our deep and abiding love for the Redwood forest. We teach our guests about the importance of our delicate ecology, and how these giant trees help to stabilize our world environment. Whether it is a once-in-a-lifetime reunion, or a favorite choice of families that get-together a few times a year, we strive to make each stay memorable.

My 9 year old grand daughter said "This is the Best House Ever"

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 17 spent our annual reunion in this lovely home. We are a family of two grandparents, four parents, and 11 children ages 1-16. The home is beautiful, roomy and very well planned for visitors like us. Nance and EJ are wonderful hosts and think of every detail. The setting is beautiful and the views are breathtaking. This place is even better than the pictures show. After our orientation to the property, my nin year old grand daughter could hardly contain her excitement. She said, "I just want to say thank you grandma for letting us stay here....this is the best house ever" There is plenty for the children including a play structure, a tree house, pool, ping pong and a separate tv room for the older ones. We didn't need to leave the area as the house had everything to keep us there. Hopefully we will return again in the future.
