About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3.25 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

Mayaguana House offers you peace and tranquility amidst tropical gardens and turquoise waters. We are located in a private compound called Old Hooper's Bay. Old Hooper's is a 30 acre site running from one of the few hills in Exuma to the sea, with 10 homes and lots of green space. Situated on two acres well off the Queen's Highway, the main house sits by the sea overlooking our landscaped gardens, Hooper's Bay, and the Atlantic beyond. Three lovely bedrooms and 3 full baths with one additional guest bath accommodate up to 9 people. Mayaguana House has two bedrooms. The Tree House, located on the hill above Mayaguana House on a separate parcel of land, holds the 3rd bedroom. Both Mayaguana House and The Tree House is available for separate rental and is fully described below. Mayaguana House alone sleeps up to 7 persons in two bedrooms each with private bath. The Tree House sleeps a maximum of 2 persons. A discount is given when renting both Mayaguana House and the Tree House concurrently.

We have a private beach, Old Hooper's Bay Beach Park, shared by the compound and Mayaguana House is blessed to have it's own private beach, called Granddaughter's Beach, just 50 feet from the main house. Both are perfect for quick dips on the ocean, snorkeling our beautiful reefs, lazy beach lounging, or creating magical sand castles. The Old Hooper's Bay Beach Park has a hammock and tree swing and is just a short distance beyond Granddaughter's Beach. Native stone walkways wind throughout our Mayaguana gardens leading to several small patios where you can enjoy quiet morning meditation or evening sunsets.

Features include cathedral ceilings, gourmet kitchen with beautiful sea views, and a 22-foot expanse of glass in the open-concept living and dining area looking out to the sea and Simon's Point in the distance. A large, seaside terrace of imported tropical Ipe hardwood is partially shaded by a traditional Bahamian hip roof provides the perfect spot for watching boats sail by enroute to Elizabeth Harbor. Outdoor dining will be one of your favorite activities, either at the Ipe dining table or around the Ipe coffee table. Then move over to the terrace hammock with a good book or head for the beach!

The master bedroom features a king-size bed, sea view and large ensuite bath with walk-in shower and two basins and private WC, detailed with imported Mexican tile. Our second bedroom, which has a garden view, is located in the adjacent guest house and features a king-size bed and a bunk bed with a queen and upper twin in a spacious room, with private bath.

The Tree House cottage holds the 3rd bedroom with a queen bed, kitchen facilities and living area. which is a 4 minute walk from the Tree House along the internal Old Hooper's road. The beach is lovely, with sandy beach into the sea, reef along the rocky shoreline and also just off shore, plus a park area with hammock and picnic space. We are very blessed! The Tree House is perfect for one couple. It is the upper story of a two story structure, with a balcony across the front which looks to Hooper's Bay and the Atlantic beyond. The cottage is fully equipped with satellite TV, DVD, CD player, WiFi, phone. Kitchen has microwave, small stove/oven, refrigerator and all the equipment. The bedroom has a queen bed. You can see the sea from your pillow tops! The bath includes a walk in shower and also has a stack laundry unit. We have a small BBQ, beach chairs, cooler. The cottage is air-conditioned. Please see our separate VBRO listing for more about The Tree House.

Not surprisingly, life on Exuma centers around the beautiful turquoise seas. Whether it is exciting water sports or quiet moments just listening to the cresting waves, Exuma will fulfill your desires. Renown for world-class bone fishing, the island has many local fishing guides. In addition, you can enjoy deep-sea fishing, boating, picnics, and reef snorkeling along the many small cays surrounding Elizabeth Harbour. Car and outboard rentals are available.

Our list of restaurants continues to grow, with fresh-cracked conch and Bahamian spiny lobsters at the top of the menu. Enjoy Exuma nightlife which includes the local Rake and Scrape Band at Eddie's Edgewater, then return home to Mayaguana House to count the endless array of stars dotting the black velvet sky overhead.

Exuma, Mayaguana House and the Tree House cottage offer you an unforgettable experience. You and your guests will awaken to the chirping of banana birds and fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves. Come and enjoy our little piece of paradise!

Wonderful secluded home with incredible views, a private beach and great landscaping.

  • 5 of 5

I have had the pleasure of staying in all three parts of Mayaguana House on 7-8 different visits but this is the first time I have reviewed them. The views are spectacular whether from the main house back patio or the tree house balcony this type of convenient seclusion is a great hard to find combination. You will need to rent a car or use cab service for any town visits. Pam the owner keeps the house in great order and it is stocked with everything you would expect. She has spent years making her book of suggestions for local restaurants and attractions a huge benefit for new visitors. The value just can't be beat one sun rise or sun set will have you hooked. Give it a try you wont be disappointed.

Beautiful Island - Beautiful Island Home!

  • 5 of 5

We couldn’t have been more pleased with our rental of Mayaguana House on our recent visit to the Exumas. It is just such a wonderful property with everything we were looking for. The 180 degree turquoise water views from the house are mesmerizing. The shaded terrace with a variety of very comfortable furnishings for snoozing, lounging or dining were ideal for morning coffee and refreshing after a busy day exploring the island. The abundant and well-kept gardens with meandering paths leading to secluded sitting areas or water access made it feel like you were at a resort. The private beach less than 2 minutes walk down a flower lined path was delightful, and just 50 ft further a private beach park all to ourselves! The great location off the Queen’s Highway in the middle of the island, close to Georgetown makes it an ideal base to explore the island.

As beautiful as the outside spaces were, the inside spaces were just as nice with high quality, comfortable furnishings, great beds with good linens, A/C throughout the house which only was needed at night to cool down as the breezes coming off the water help cool the house. The house is tastefully decorated with unique island art and Caribbean sea theme. The kitchen is so well-equipped and stocked and all appliances in working order made dining in feel like you were at your own home! We didn’t want for any item, it was all there. Wireless Internet, Satellite TV and an In-House + Terrace music system all nice additions in perfect working order to keep in touch back home and add an entertainment option when desired.

When venturing out to explore the beautiful island we had everything we needed, all provided by Mayaguana; beach towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella, picnic basket, multiple coolers of various sizes, beer coozies for your Kalik! We rented a boat for two days from Minns and having all these items made it so easy to boat to our own private island and be fully comfortable and equipped!

Pam, the owner, was very easy to work with; very responsive and made the rental and arrival process a breeze! We have been renting island properties for the last 10 years on our travels across the Caribbean and Mayaguana is truly one of the best we have stayed at. Highly Recommended!

The gang from Texas

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough good things about our stay in Exuma. Pam and Bill provide an absolutely beautiful setting for wonderful times with our family. We took our grandsons to celebrate their sixteenth birthday....and wow did we take home some awesome memories. The house is so comfortable and wait till you see the views from the terraces. We loved the home so much that we spent the majority of our afternoons and evenings there. The kitchen had everything we needed to make great meals (the local grocery store is great) and the boys loved grilling on the back terrace overlooking the ocean. Restful nights energized us for the next adventure. And did I mention there are so many places to enjoy just around the corner. Hopefully we will return someday with more family or perhaps our friends.

Owner's Response: Dear Gang from Texas, So glad you enjoyed your stay at Mayaguana House. Sounds like your family really got into Bahamas Mode - a good place to be! Chillin' and grillin' on the seaside terrace is one of our favorite evening activities, too. Best wishes to your grandson for a great 16th year ahead! Pam

Paradise + amenities = hard to leave.

Mayaguana House totally exceeded expectations, even considering the beautiful pictures posted. The house itself was spacious and airy, from the large and fully-equipped kitchen to the dining room to the master bedroom and bath. The feature that was first among equals was the patio stretching the full-length of the house (and then some), overlooking the bay and perfect for playing cards, relaxing on the hammock, or chatting and enjoying a Kalick or two. Not only does the patio overlook the turquoise bay, but it overlooks the wonderful garden/backyard that even has orchids growing in the trees. I thought it was great to be able to listen to music. The speakers on the patio, in the family room, and in the bedroom could be selected/deselected separately, and we plugged in multiple iPods throughout the week so that everyone could play DJ once. My wife and I loved falling asleep and waking up to the sound of waves. I'm almost embarrassed we took advantage of the Internet and satellite TV. The Internet in The Exumas isn't the most reliable, so email okay, video conferencing not so much. It was comforting to be able to watch the Jets lose in real-time. My sister stayed in the Guest House, which was nice and cozy, and my wife's sister stayed in the Tree House, also nice and cozy. We had some other family members staying on the island and had no problem cooking and grilling for them all. Space is not something Mayaguana House lacks. The house is only 10 minutes from the airport, and at the time of our trip, family came in direct from Atlanta and Miami, whereas we flew from Boston to Nassau and then took an inter-island flight to Exumas International. The only relative disappointment was that we arrived in the evening and had to wait until the morning light to see how truly spectacular the outside surroundings were. We also took advantage of the beach and snorkeling off of Old Hooper's Bay beach, just a few minutes' walk from Mayaguana House.

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We have rented from Pam two years in a row (looking to our third next year). The house is lovely, without being fussy. And it is incredibly well-equipped. (She has more kitchen tools than we do!) We had two families and the house worked wonderfully. But nothing tops the location. Close to Georgetown with your own beach. The beach is worth the rental alone. It is spectacular. We cannot say enough positive things about Mayaguana or Pam's professionalism in working with her.
