Ranch Style Cabin on 20 Acres in the Beautiful Tunk Valley

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7)

Spectacular all round views from this ranch style cabin in the beautiful Tunk Valley -- a little known piece of rustic countryside bordering the Okanogan National Forest, northeast of Omak and near the small town of Riverside.

Enjoy nature from this luxury cabin and wrap-around porch. A birdwatcher's paradise the Tunk Valley also offers breathtaking views, hiking local forest trails, mountain biking the quiet country roads, fishing at Crawfish Lake, and wildlife viewing from the cabin, in the valley, and at the Tunk Valley Wildlife Area. It also offers just living with a frontier feel.

In summer the land is a sea of color from the grasses and wild flowers, and with the backdrop of mountains and dramatic skyscapes the cabin is a nature artists dream. An easel is provided in the main bedroom, inspiration is provided all around.

In winter the surrounding area offers cross-country and backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. The cabin is five miles from Crawfish Lake, which usually freezes hard enough to snowmobile, ski or skate on. Local skiing areas include Loup Loup Pass and Havillah, both about one hours drive away.

For those not wishing to drive the cabin sits on 20 acres of private land, where guests are free to wander. A walk around the perimeter is three quarters of a mile.

The cabin itself is at an elevation of around 3,000 feet, and stays a bit cooler than down in the valley. The main floor has a gorgeous living room with a gas cast iron stove for those cozy evenings. There is a large fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and a private master bedroom with bathroom. Upstairs it has two large bedrooms, and a full bathroom. A huge detached double garage is also available.

The cabin is approximately 14 miles from the historic country town of Riverside and the Okanogan River, nearby towns include Omak, Okanogan and Tonasket. The Many Lakes Recreational Area offers many summer activities for boaters and fishermen. Local events include the Omak Stampede and other county fairs. Easy day trips include the Tunk Valley Wildlife Area, the Stonerose Fossil beds, the state park and historical sites at Conconully, the sparkling and unspoilt Omak Lake, the ghost town of Molson, the Loomis National Forest, the Methow Valley, and the North Cascades National Park.

About The Owner

I live and work in Seattle as a writer. My wife is a graphic designer, our three kids go to local elementary, middle and high schools. We have been customers of VRBO cabin owners across the West for many years, and decided this was a good way to occassionally rent out our own cabin. We use our cabin regularly as an escape from the big city. We love the space, the peace, and the great outdoors that the Okanogan has to offer.

The Owner purchased this house in 2008

Why The Owner chose North Central Cascades

Peace and tranquility. Wilderness views in all directions, and great access to the wild outdoors.

What makes this house unique

Great air quality. Early morning sunshine. Forests, rivers and lakes in several directions. Wildlife is around.

The Branches

We loved our stay at the Ranch Style Cabin. We had wonderful views all around the wrap around patio of mountains and rolling hills. We went for walks down the dirt road and enjoyed the sunshine streaming into the windows in the morning. The only downside was the need to keep mice out of the house, which we found it was apparent they were there.

Thank you,

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback, and glad you enjoyed your visit. We occasionally have issues with both mice and woodpeckers. Not very often with mice, but sometimes, especially after a long period of rain, they can be a nuisance. For the woodpeckers I finally built them "woodpecker hotels" - bird houses to just the right dimensions, to encourage them to stay without causing any issues. The mice in the open ground do attract raptors, especially hawks, to the property. I will increase the supply of traps available to guests though, just in case nature gets too close.

Absolutely tranquil and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This was a magnificent home with stunning views in every direction! I love how peaceful and quiet it is. This is the perfect getaway if you want to unwind and get away from it all. The wrap around porch is amazing and was perfect for that morning cup of coffee! We even had snow in April.

We will definitely be back and would recommend this property to anyone looking to get a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

A true getaway

  • 5 of 5

It has been a few weeks since we've stayed at this Tunk Valley Cabin outside of Omak and it's still on our minds. We've stayed at many vacation homes and cabins and have never experienced one like this before. It was a special place and we were able to really get away from it all and relax there. The landscape and views are stunning and the area is fun to explore.

We saw so many pretty birds and wildlife (a bear and a moose included!) and came back with great memories and pictures. Besides the home itself, going up to Crawfish Lake was our favorite experience there. It is a beautiful, peaceful lake where you can picnic, walk around, read, relax etc.

There are lots of roads in the area to explore.

The house has the comforts of home and then some. It is very clean and well-maintained. The bed and furniture were comfortable.

The deck is incredible. When we weren't out exploring it's where we spent most of our time. It's a jackpot for dogs too, so much land to explore and then plop down on the deck and relax when they are tired out.

We wanted a private place where we could tune the world out for a bit and this was it. It is not completely secluded in that there is a neighbor's house visible in the distance, but it felt secluded because there is so much space between you.

We definitely want to go back again! I'm so glad we found it and decided to stay there. Thank you to the owner for having this home available for others to experience and enjoy.

An Incredibly Beautiful and Restful Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed three wonderful nights at this beautiful, remote home. We found the house immaculate and in perfect order with all the amenities anyone could possibly want or desire. The furnishings are beautiful and the beds extremely comfortable. The home comes equipped with nearly new appliances to include a gas range, stainless refrigerator, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. No need to over-pack or bring excessive luggage. Everything you need is provided.

The house is very private with your nearest neighbor at least 250 yards in the distance. The views from the windows and wrap-around porch are absolutely stunning. In regards to local attractions, the house is located 15 minutes from the entrance to the Okanogan National Forest and Crawfish Lake. I strongly suggest bringing a map of the Okanogan National Forest along with you as you will want to explore the area. There are also a number of nearby back roads that are perfect for taking in the local scenery and visiting historic sites.

The nearest restaurants and major stores are located in Omak (Wal-Mart), which is 20 miles away. There is a local convenience store and gas station in the town of Riverside, 14 miles from the house. Be sure to fill-up your vehicle with gas before leaving Omak or at the Riverside store. The only word of caution I might offer is that many of the local roads are marked "Private Road - No Trespassing". The local residents place a very high value on their privacy, and seem a bit sensitive to tourists.

My wife and I look forward to returning again very soon. We absolutely loved our experience in the Tunk Valley!

Awesome Place to Relax and Unwind!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful 3 nights in this cabin. The photos do not do the views from the wrap-around deck justice- they're stunning! The house was extremely clean, comfortable, and well equipped. We spent most of our time there enjoying the views, the fresh air, the quiet, and the daily visits from the friendly neighbor horses, who our 4-year-old fell in love with. We went into Okanogan for the farmer's market and had a nice hike at Lost Lake. Terrific place to recharge, catch up on reading, and have some family time. We'll be back- we want to see it in the snow!

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

I love the Okanogan country, and this area was pretty much the most beautiful I've been exposed to yet. This year the whole area is exceptionally green and lush. Despite having my 2 young children with me who have tons of energy and little capacity to be independent yet, I still felt surprisingly peaceful and relaxed while staying at this property. Most of our day trips required a 30 minute to hour long drive, but the scenery is so great, and the pace so relaxing, that the driving really did not bother me. It was part of the whole adventure. Check out Omak Lake for sure if you go. The house was very clean, the bedrooms were large (especially the 2 upstairs), and the huge deck was fabulous. The stars were pretty spectacular at night. One area of improvement would be that the property could benefit from a nice lawn to facilitate enjoying the great summer weather a little more (and it would really encourage young kids to be outside more), but this is nitpicking a bit. Overall, this is a great destination as long as you are ok with the idea of having to do some driving to get there, and then to go see different attractions in the area.
