About the property

3 bedrooms (+convertible bed), 3.5 baths, courtyard pool & lounge, walkscore 95

Casa Abuelita lies in the heart of old La Paz, one block from both the Malecón (the boardwalk that lines the bay) and the cathedral and the central plaza. La Paz’s finest restaurants are within a block or two of the house. Within a short walk there are two traditional mercados (markets) where you can buy fresh fish, meats and produce.

A traditional La Paz home over a hundred years old, Casa Abuelita has recently been given an exquisite renovation that keeps the craftsmanship of an old home while bringing you 21st century amenities and comforts.

The original doors still stand under the wooden beams and corrugated roof (fitted with modern thermal insulation). The street side rooms that once served as space for typing classes given by Señora Julieta have been remodeled and are now finely designed bathrooms that buffer the street noise. In the central courtyard (with lounge & pool) you will find an unexpected serenity, especially in the garden where an old well still reaches down into the La Paz aquifer.

Casa Abuelita is equipped with WiFi, the kitchen is fully stocked with wares, and you'll find fresh towels & n the bathrooms.

About Yolanda Espinoza

My name is Monica. I grew up in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, and have lived La Paz for the last six years. During that time, I've grown roots into the community through educational programs and efforts to advance environmental conscience in the form of organic gardens, recycling, and sustainable water-management practices.

Yolanda Espinoza purchased this house in 2006

Why Yolanda Espinoza chose Baja California Sur

Location! Casa Abuelita is in the absolute center of downtown, and only a short walk from the beach. Walk around the corner and you'll find a local café; choose another direction and you'll find three restaurants; the central plaza (one block away) is surrounded by small bars & shops.

El Cirio offers great service with many amenities. The owner lives nearby and can attend to any issues personally or through trusted staff members.

What makes this house unique

El Cirio is committed to sustainability, social responsibility, and offers several unique services.

Our sustainability efforts include a community-based recycling program and the women-led business that makes and sells the natural cleaning products we use in our housekeeping service. We also provide childcare and traditional cooking upon request.

Gringo Stay In La Paz at Casa Abuelita

  • 5 of 5

The home is ideally situated near to Malecon, just a few blocks away. There is a convenient grocery nearby for almost all needs. The nearby restaurants were generally really good for late night dinners and just a few doors down an excellent bagel shop that makes killer breakfast sandwiches if you prefer not to cook at home. the house itself is very well appointed, 3 bedrooms and 3 full baths. the living space is quiet comfortable. we spent most time in the outside small pool area and in the casita in the back, very private and weren't overseen by the neighboring buildings. the showers tend to spray wide outside the shower area so a little care and clean up is required. the house manager was very responsive and gave us a thorough introduction to the house and area. You will need a car getting around outside the immediate area especially the best beaches are a 20 minute drive to the north, Tecolate was the favorite as it has amenities needed to make a full day outing. We would definitely stay here again should we come back to La Paz.

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about this house. It was perfect. It is beautiful, well equipped and in the most perfect location. There were so many different types of restaurants right out our door, and they were so good.....we really didn't need a car. The wading pool was perfect to cool off and the ocean is steps away. Even the Ecobaja tour to get to the San Jose Airport and to the beaches were steps away from the house.

Classic style, lots of space and great location

  • 4 of 5

The three of us – Canadians in various stages of retiring – spent two weeks in early March enjoying the colonial-style, three-bedroom Casa Abuelita. The location is great – just a block from the marvelous, five kilometer Malecon along the sea front and excellent places to eat and drink within steps and a short walk of the house. La Paz is a fabulous place to fish and explore the spectacular sea life of the Sea of Cortez. Thoughtfully the owner has reserved an ‘exclusivo’ parking space for tenants right in front of the house well demarcated with cactus planted to note the space. We were happy with each of our spacious bedrooms and their creatively decorated ensuite bathrooms (although a bit more light around the mirrors and showers would be appreciated). Being used to the most common shortfall of holiday house rentals – ill-equipped kitchens – we were very pleasantly surprised at the kitchen’s ample counter space, helpful center island and extensive appliances. The only bleat would be a repeat of a previous tenants concern that we had to stock the kitchen from scratch – surely previous renters have left spices, sugar, etc. A large open-plan dining room and living room (with cable-connected flat-screen television) completes the floor plan in a house that has excellent flow of indoor and outdoor space.

The most appealing feature is the secluded courtyard where we spent many hours relaxing, drinking, reading and enjoying the peace and quiet. The outdoor space also has its own washroom and laundry space. Unfortunately the plunge pool was not functioning for most of our two weeks due to a missing part that finally arrived with a few days left. We enjoyed it for those last few days, and received a reasonable discount on the rental in recognition of its non-functioning status for most of our stay. When we needed our drinking water replenished or minor repairs performed the house support staff responded kindly. The bottom line? We would have no hesitation in recommending any of our friends and family choose Casa Abuelita for their stay in lovely La Paz.

Definitely, the best house on the street

  • 4 of 5

This house is pretty with lovely spaces and a central location. For some, the location may also be its downfall. The area is very noisy at night, particularly weekends, with competing music and street noise from nearby restaurants, bars and nightclubs. If you want nightlife or sleep like a log it may be just the place for you.

The house is professionally run and this may be why it was different that other VRBO homes we have enjoyed. The manager met us at the house which was very kind as we were couldn’t predict our arrival time. She provided a package of information that included an exhaustive inventory of everything inside (and I think at the front entrance) the house that could possibly be removed even with a screwdriver. There is no phone, despite the VRBO listing. There was none of the customary information re restaurant recommendations etc but the manager did suggest a grocery store close by. Maps of central La Paz were provided. Fortunately the house had wifi and it worked perfectly.

While well outfitted in terms of kitchen equipment and linens, there wasn’t even salt/pepper. There was a small supply of diluted dish soap, but only a small natural sponge to wash the dishes. Two one-litre bottles of drinking water were provided: The instructions advised not to drink tap water. Consequently, we had to stock the kitchen from scratch. I don’t expect a lot of supplies, but I have never been in a VRBO rental where the water was not potable and an ongoing supply of drinking water was not provided. In fairness, the listing does not include drinking water. I’m sure that past renters have left supplies, but the policy of this rental is to clean everything out.

The manager was often unresponsive or slow to respond to questions. We had to follow up to get our deposit returned and then it was not sent as indicated thus costing us additional fees.

The photos are accurate. The 3rd bedroom is off the courtyard and quieter than the other bedrooms, but it has a strangely short and uncomfortable bed. The other beds were great. The house has a well-furnished living room. The pool is a plunge pool, but is heated and lovely. There is exclusive street parking which was respected except one evening. If you rent, a tip to get hot water: the hot water is on demand and the batteries that provide the spark to light the propane water heaters corrode a quite quickly, inhibiting the ability to light the propane. Just spin the batteries in place and you will likely have hot water.

Family fishing trip

  • 5 of 5

This little house is such a delight! It's the second time we stay here and we love it. It's close proximity to the malecon, groceries store, restaurants and downtown make it easy to get around without a car. Having 3.5 bathrooms is a plus, great kitchen for cooking and a really lovely patio. Yolanda the property manager is wonderful. Easy to reach and communicates promptly. We found everything in working condition, clean and comfy. We'll be staying here again!
