Sunny, Spacious 2 Bedroom Apartment with Terrace Near Market

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms (1 Queen bed and 2 twin beds), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Sunny, bright and spacious, 2-bedroom apartment on 2 levels with a terrace in a small, quiet building in central Cavaillon, just steps from one of the largest weekly markets in Provence. Right across the street is a boulangerie and a fruitière, along with a bank and a pharmacy and a wonderful cheese shop 2 short blocks away. There are at least 3 wonderful restaurants within a 5 minute walk from our apartment.

The apartment is equipped with air-conditioning and an elevator. The main bedroom has a large queen bed with French doors leading to the terrace; the 2nd bedroom has 2 twin beds and a skylight. The bedrooms are on the 2nd level along with a full bathroom (with shower and bathtub) and a toilet. There is a toilet as well on the 1st level. You can dine on our large, sunny and completely private terrace as well. The terrace is equipped with a large table with 6 chairs and a sun umbrella along with 4 deck chairs and 2 sun loungers.

The living/dining room and kitchen are on the 1st level. The living area has a table and 6 chairs, a sofa which converts to a double bed, 2 arm chairs and a 42-inch LCD TV and DVD. And there is lots of storage space in cupboards on both levels.

Please Note: Due to the stairs, the apartment is not suitable for children under the age of 5

Cavaillon is centrally located in the Vaucluse region of Provence only 20 kms from Avignon, 55 kms from Aix-en-Provence, 60 kms from Marseille and the international airport and just a short drive from St. Remy de Provence, Arles (of van Gogh fame), Apt and L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

You can visit the picturesque villages of the Luberon - Menerbes (featured in Peter Mayle’s book, 'A Year in Provence') and the stunning hilltop villages of Gordes, Bonnieux, Goult and Roussillon all of which are within a 30-minute drive away as are many local wineries. Cannes, St. Tropez and the Riviera are an easy 2 hour drive away along the Autoroute de Soleil (A7) which is conveniently accessible from Cavaillon and the Autoroute 8.

Paris is only 2 and 1/2 hours away by the TGV (high-speed train) from Avignon.

Cavaillon (pop. 23,000) is somewhat off the beaten tourist track but that's one of the reasons we like it so much. The people here are very friendly and extremely tolerate of my less-than-perfect French. It is home to a 16th century Synagogue (now a museum), a 2000 year-old Roman arch, and many other archeological sites of interest. Every Monday morning, Cavaillon hosts one of the largest markets in Provence on the street literally at the end of our parking entrance. You will also find upscale women's clothing stores, shoe stores, and a linen store all within 5 minutes of the apartment. I do most of my clothes shopping here even though we are close to the larger centres like Avignon and Aix.

About Neassa Grennan

We are a Canadian couple, from the Ottawa area, who have fulfilled a dream of owning a place in the south of France. We have traveled extensively and love this part of the country. We are planning to spend 3 to 4 months a year in Cavaillon when we retire in a few years' time. In the meantime, we try to visit at least 2 times a year. We love the fact that we can decide on the spur of the moment to go have a coffee in Aix (for example) and be there in under 45 minutes. Or take a quick (20 minutes) trip to St Remy de Provence to visit the van Gogh museum.

Neassa Grennan purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Neassa Grennan chose Cavaillon

The climate, food and scenery is wonderful in the south of France. Our city, Cavaillon, is close to the perched villages of the Luberon (like Menerbes and Gordes) as well as cities like Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy de Provence, Arles, and only 2.5 hrs away from Cannes and Nice. We're also very close to Barcelona (4 hr drive) and the Marseille International Airport which means we have easy access to European and African countries. And Paris is only 2.5 hrs away by TGV. The city is small (23,000) and not 'touristy' at all which is nice since you get a feel for living in a real Provence city. We find the people of Cavaillon extremely gracious and very kind: I speak very basic French yet I have always felt welcomed by the residents of Cavaillon and the neighbouring towns of Menerbes, St Remy and Avignon.

What makes this apartment unique

We are able to walk across the street each morning to buy a baguette at the Patisserie and we are within a 5-10 minute walk of many gourmet restaurants. We're just a 10-minute walk to the train station (where there is a great pizza place) and the 2 cinemas in town (the movies are all recent; sometimes they are in English with French subtitles.) We are about 50 feet away from one of the largest weekly markets in Provence: it's a great way to spend the morning. The market runs down both sides of our street from top to bottom and literally everything you can imagine is for sale - fruits, vegetables, housewares, clothes, soaps, sausages, spices...Even though our apartment is centrally located, we find it very quiet at night.

Excellent value and central Provence location!

  • 4 of 5

Excellent value. Spacious for two couples. Great location and helpful and effective property manager! Only issue was that shower head was not affixed to wall. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed this VRBO!

Owner's Response: Hi Cory, Thank you so much for your lovely review. I am so sorry about the shower. I was not aware that the fixing had come away as we only replaced it a few months ago. I have someone going to repair it today! It was absolutely lovely to meet you all and I am glad you enjoyed your stay so much. I hope you enjoyed your onward travels too. I really hope to meet you all again some day. Very best wishes and thank you again for your stay, Neassa.

Excellent apartment that is very well located for day trips to various towns in Provence

  • 5 of 5

This two bedroom apartment is perfect for a couple or a family of four. It has private parking if you are driving and is very convenient to the Cavaillon train station if you are traveling via train. The apartment has all the necessities and is well stocked with everything you need for your stay. There is a small grocery store directly across the street if you choose to eat in. There are numerous restaurants near by that are within easy walking distance. If you are interested in immersing yourself in Provence, the apartment is in the perfect location. All of the major towns in the area are within an easy drive from Cavaillon. Your host for the apartment, Neassa, is wonderful to work with and is very responsive. She will show you everything about the apartment and has collected hints and recommendation from dining to traveling to make your stay a terrific experience. I highly recommend this property.

genieten in de provence

  • 4 of 5

Lovely Escape in Cavaillon

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a delightful week at this apartment. Neassa was so kind and helpful with all details, and we appreciated her warm welcome. The apartment is well appointed and comfortable, and we felt very much at home. The area is very walkable, and the convenience of the grocery store and bakery, as well as shops and restaurants, was wonderful. We explored the neighborhoods, had a tour of the Synagogue, hiked the little mountains to the hermitage, and saw a fine art exhibit in a former church. The street market was fun, and the restaurants quite good. We rented a car and toured many of the nearby Provençal towns, each one unique and interesting. We highly recommend this little gem! Thank you.

Big Beautiful Duplex in Heart of Provence

  • 5 of 5

This huge apartment on two levels was perfect for our family. Modern secure building with elevator (and gated parking lot) tucked into the historic center of town. Totally private second floor walled terrace, in the Provencal style, dine or sunbathe on it. 2nd floor is actually elevator accessible too if stairs are a problem. Walk out the door to historic square, get your morning croissant and daily baguette at boulangerie across the street. Owner Pat recommends the best restaurants in town, we had really fabulous meals out, or cook yourselves---shop with locals for fresh veggies, cheese, fish, meat, from the small markets on the street. Very well stocked kitchen, with staples, and lovely new dishes and glasses, cutlery, pans. Pat is wonderful to work with, e-mail her with any questions, she answers immediately. We used the washer, it's a wonderful plus to be able to do laundry, and the separate half bath on 1st floor makes everything easier with a few people. Big bath (tub, shower, bidet) upstairs next to bedrooms, with toilet in separate room, is convenient too for a few people. Big comfortable bed in master BR, with French doors to terrace and second BR's twin beds make it easy with kids. Pat has a local agent meet you there with keys, she's a good resource. This was our 5th VRBO and we are very, very happy with our choice. Excellent value. Cavaillon was the perfect central location in Provence for exploring---off main highways, not far to huge TGV train station outside Avignon and SO easy to drive everywhere in Provence within an hour, even Marseille airport and Camargue and the Mediterranean. And Cavaillon is a beautiful town---not a trendy village but a real town with friendly people, historic walks, a tourist info. office, big food stores on edge of town. Climb up stone stairs to top of spectacular cliffs (which you see from apartment terrace!) overlooking town for views of Provence. We loved it there and would love to go back.

Excellent choice for day trips in Provence

  • 5 of 5

"My friend and I found this apt. perfect for our needs. We used it as a base for daily excursions to many cities, villages and sights in Provence. The convenience of parking our rental car right outside the apt. was a real plus. Space was ample, with a bedroom for each of us, a kitchen large enough to accommodate us both when we ate in, and a roomy dining/living area in which to eat and hang out. We loved Cavaillon and having a fresh produce market right across the street. And we got to practice our French frequently, as the town didn't seem to have many tourists. Kudos to Pat for her suggestion to take the scenic route to Aix-on-Provence -- and for having a French Monopoly set (great for rainy days)."

We were there in April and the weather was perfect, except for one rainy day. People who go to Provence in the summer often look for a rental with a yard, a view and a swimming pool, which this apartment does not have. But it is spacious, convenient and pedestrian-friendly.
