About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10-11)

Fully enjoy the beauty of the upper Texas Gulf Coast from our house situated between the beach and the bay. Fish House is located between Galveston and Surfside in an area of the coast with wide, undeveloped beaches and lots of room to explore. A 200 yard walk from our house puts you on the beach, and a 100 yard walk puts you in the middle of a teeming crabbing fishery. A pier behind the house give you access to crabbing and fishing in the bay. There are also beach access roads within 1/4 mile of the house which makes transporting the toys and sun shade to the beach an easy trip.

Fish House is our family’s second home designed by us and completed in late 2008. We have young children, so the house is kid-friendly and stocked with inside and beach toys. Fine design and material finishes make this a fun house to visit. We call it 'Fish House' since we love to fish in the area. Fish House is located in a new subdivision in which seven beautiful new homes were built during 2008. There are no houses immediately adjacent to Fish House affording you a measure of privacy, sweeping views and plenty of room to spread out.

Fish House is a two story house with a modern style that covers approximately 2,100 square feet. Downstairs the kitchen is open to the dining area and a living room, and there is a large laundry room and the master bedroom. The master bedroom contains a small couch and a clawfoot tub for two. The kitchen island and its barstools together with the dining table allow for sit down dining for 10-12. Two refrigerators provide storage for all of the food and drinks your family can handle. The kitchen fridge and the drinking water faucet at the kitchen sink have Reverse Osmosis water for pure drinking water and ice. Upstairs is a living room with a large flat screen TV, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Two bedrooms contain queen beds, one having its own balcony facing Drum Bay. The third bedroom contains a full bed, bunk beds and a “pack and play” crib. All bedrooms have views to the water.

The deck wraps around three sides of the house and provides a huge outdoor living area with views of the beach and the bay and up and down the island. From our deck you can take in the beautiful sunrise with a fresh cup of coffee, and finish the day sipping a margarita with the sunset as your backdrop. You can sit on the deck and watch birds and fishermen work the bay and the kite surfers and sailboats frolic in the surf. The main portion of our deck, on the east side of the house, is shaded by the house from the afternoon sun and catches the cool ocean breezes all day long.

In addition to the swimmers and sunbathers, our area of the beach draws traditional surfers, kite surfers, Hobie Cat sailboats and fishermen depending on the state of the wind. Our house is an excellent place from which to fish the bay with a powerboat or kayak (there is a small boat ramp within ½ mile from the house and places to launch kayaks all up and down the island). Offshore fishing is convenient too if that is your pleasure. The Surfside area is home to many fishing guides who can put you on the fish during your stay.

Lake Jackson includes many entertainment and dining opportunities and holds Sea Center Texas which is a wonderful trip for young and old alike. Galveston provides many entertainment and dining opportunities as well including theater, music, a water park and lots more. Several nice golf courses in Galveston and Lake Jackson are easy to reach. Surfside and Freeport have several good restaurants all within a few miles. Winter time provides wonderful bird watching right behind the house in the bird sanctuary managed by the Cradle of Texas Conservancy. The diversity of the area’s ecosystem is stunning.

Finally, getting there and back home is an easy 70 minute drive down 288 from Houston.

About Laura

We enjoy doing outdoor activites as a family.

Laura purchased this house in 2008

Why Laura chose Freeport

Fish House offers access to the beach, fishing and other nearby activities and is a way to get away from the busy city of Houston. We like to fish in the bay, surf and offshore. The location is perfect for a Houstonian needing to take an easy vacation.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy swimming, building things in the sand, watching birds, boats and water, fishing, and being with friends and family. The deck offers us great views of the beach, bay and especially beautiful sunsets. While at the house, we spend a lot of time cooking and making merry. You can walk to the beach and walk out on the pier behind the house to crab or fish. We have also found the winter at Fish House to be especially beautiful!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed at Fish House for five days June 13-18 and wish we could have stayed five months! It was great! There was plenty of room for the 10 of us to spread out in the spacious house and the decks are wonderful! It's just a short walk to the beach, which was VERY quiet during the time we were there, almost like having our own private area. The view of both the bay and the beach are gorgeous. Fish House is a great place to relax and enjoy your family!

VRBO Bear stayed here

What a lucky bear family we are to have stayed at this absolutely ideal beach house! Nestled in the quiet town of Surfside Beach, we had nearly absolute privacy. We were however, a thirty-minute drive away from Galveston Island which has entertainment and activities-a-plenty for bears of any age. The Fish House, as it's titled, is nicely appointed so we were able to make beautiful meals in the open and airy kitchen. There is a large and sturdy outdoor table to enjoy those meals with endless views of the waves. A roomy deck wraps around three sides of the house and there are two bonus balconies on each side of the second floor. This momma bear got to enjoy her coffee while relaxing in the morning breezes from each side of the house and watching the cranes and seagulls fish for breakfast. This is the kind of house that makes you want to go home and redecorate your bear cave. The Fish House has a definite style and lots of it. You can absolutely feel the love and attention that is afforded with the decor and amenities. There is a gorgeous clawfoot tub in the master suite, beautiful linens and soft towels. The upstairs living room is so perfect for snuggling up with the cubs and watching movies before bed--and that is exactly what we did. It was a great way to unwind after hours in the ocean. Speaking of the ocean, Fish House is close enough to the beach that my little three year-old cub could walk unassisted and carry his pail and shovels. The house has a garage with beach toys, boogie boards and more plus an invaluable outdoor shower to get the sand out of your fur and leave the beach outside. I have and will continue to recommend this house to anyone in need of a relaxing and serene vacation with family or group of friends.

Our 2nd visit to the fish house did not disappoint. Such a great place to bring the kids

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in spring 2015 and late fall 2017. Both times were with family and friends. So relaxing. Lots to do. Crabbing, fishing, swimming (even in November) or just curl up next to a book on any of the decks and take in the views.

Perfect for fun family Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Fish House during Thanksgiving week. The house is spacious, yet warm and comfortable. Very nice kitchen and generous bedrooms and baths. Having a separate bath for each of our three family units was great. Laundry and second refrigerator were helpful extras.

The location is terrific, perched nicely between ocean and marsh. While not right on ocean, very close with lovely view. The marsh and its walkway on the backside of the property were beautiful and constantly interesting to watch, with many birds.

Note to families with little people: the huge deck around three sides of the house was SUPER helpful with an active two year old because of the gate at the top of the stairs and plenty of room to run and play safely. And excellent ocean and marsh viewing for all from the deck and big windows.

Owner was very helpful with my questions and provided useful info. Easy transactions and great communications.

The whole family loved this place and I am sure we will be back!

My family of four had so much fun at this beautiful house! You can tell the owners put a lot of pride into decorating and keeping their Fishhouse in tip top shape. The beach is super close and the restaurants are delicious. Definitely will come Back again! Highly recommend.

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful stay at the Fish House this summer! Our stay was so relaxing and our two young boys had a wonderful time. They spent hours catching crabs off of the pier and enjoyed playing at the beach. We really needed a relaxing vacation and time together as a family and that was exactly what we had! I enjoyed cooking in the beautiful kitchen, while watching our kids play and looking out at the bay. We will definitely stay at the Fish House again! Our sons said it was the best vacation they have ever been on. The house felt like home to all of us and we are so thankful for the time spent there together!
