A nice historic property to call home for a few days.

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for our annual Women Unplugged retreat. 6 women ranging in age from 8-51 shared, created, ate, sipped and played together in this private, quiet property. The pool was nice, the veranda was magical and the home and living spaces were clean and livable. We enjoyed exploring the rich history of the home and families that owned and loved it. The old guestbooks from Annefield were particularly fascinating. Some of the antiques were quite rare. We enjoyed the river and everything the home had to offer. Also, the caretakers were very helpful and responsive when we had a concern about the pool. Many thanks for allowing us to stay in your magical PlayGarden.

Beautiful home, Gorgeous location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Play Garden. The house has so much charm, is comfortable, and the view is amazing! Since the weather was cold, we spent most of our time enjoying the view from the plate glass windows in the kitchen and the warmth of the fireplace in the cozy living room. The house was large enough to be able to invite our extended family over for dinners. We plan to return soon!

Honor to stay in such an historic home!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful time staying at the Play Gardens and exploring the local area - great hiking, wineries, and history so close by. It was an honor to stay in this historic home, and was absolutely the most thoughtfully put together, labeled, stocked, and organized vacation home we could have asked for! It truly felt like home for the long weekend.

Great base to explore the area; wish we had spent more time on the property

  • 5 of 5

Great house with lost of charm. We used it as a base to explore wineries but in retrospect we should have spent less time exploring and more time at the house and surrounding area. River view is great, we should have made arrangements to use the kayaks that are provided. Considering going back next fall with a different itinerary in mind. Used the guest house as well. While not as charming as the main house it was very comfortable as well

Amazing property with great views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a 3 nights just before Easter weekend. It was two families with a bunch of young kids (5-12 year olds) so we took both the main and the guest house. There was plenty of room for us all. The view of the Shenandoah is spectacular from the back porch, I loved sitting there watching (and feeling) the sunrise each morning, sipping on coffee. The kids had a blast free ranging around the yard which is huge, well defined, and contained (we didn't worry about the wandering off and getting lost anywhere).

It is about 15-20 mins drive to some fun hikes on the Appalachian Trail as well as two sets (one to the north, one to the south) of Virginia's finest vineyards. It was awesome spending a day there, then stopping at the butcher shop on the way home to pick out some meats for grilling.

Overall, this was one of the best houses we have rented through VRBO, it was well supplied, had plenty of cooking supplies, spices, coffee, etc. It also had fishing rods, kayaks, coolers, and pretty much anything else you would want or need while up there.

It's likely we'll go back again!

Relaxing week in an idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We visited for a week with our two young daughters and had a great time! The house is well-stocked with everything you'd have in your own house and very comfortable. In addition to a big yard to play in, there were plenty of games and toys to keep them entertained. We would love to come back when it's warm enough to use the pool!
