Gracious Country Home in Washington, Ct

Bedrooms 4
Space 3,400 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 - 30 nights

About the property

4 Bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, Great Room (Sleeps 8)

Step back in time into a house steeped in history but beautifully restored with all the modern comforts and amenities. This historic 210 year old home was part of the original Underground Railroad running thru CT during the Civil War. The tunnel leading into the house is still intact. The house was built by one of the areas largest iron masters, Samuel Forbes for his daughter and son-in-law. The wedding trees planted upon their marriage still grace the front entrance.

Set on more than 2 1/2 exquisite acres with a beautiful private pond, a small barn, perfect rows of white hydrangea, fragrant lilac bushes and gardens, the Samuel Forbes House, built in 1799, has been impeccably restored over five years to its initial grand manor house splendor, and is available by the week, month or season at surprisingly affordable rates.

Graced with 11 foot ceilings, 12 over 12 windows throughout, and well proportioned rooms, the house can easily accommodate families or reunions and comfortably sleeps 6-8 people.  The house has a 4 zone heating system and central AC throughout. There are 3 wood burning fireplaces and 2 gas fireplaces upstairs.

The fully equiped kitchen will make any serious cook happy with a professional 6 burner, double oven Wolf stove, Bosch dishwasher, a large refrigerator and plenty of prep space. It opens directly to the spacious and light-filled 15' x 25' post and beam great room where you can relax in front of a roaring fire, watch television on the 42' screen or simply sit and read and take in the outdoors. This room opens to the outside with a French door leading to the deck with a large stainless steel DCS grill and a table for al fresco dining. On the side of the kitchen is the formal dining room which is 15' x 25' with a massive original keeping room fireplace. The table comfortably seats 12-14. Off the dining room a hallway leads to a beautiful guest room with a queen size Grange sleigh bed with its own perfectly renovated full bath with Waterworks fixtures and shower. Adjacent is the front parlor (15' x 20') with baby grand piano and wood burning fireplace. Mudroom and brand new LG washer and dryer complete the first floor.

A staircase in the Dining Room leads to the upstairs. On one side is the sun-filled master suite (15' x 30') with 3 exposures. Originally a ballroom with a vaulted ceiling, the room boast a paneled fireplace that has been fitted with natural looking Eiklor gas logs. The comfortable king size bed has Frette linens that you can really sink into, and a large bath outfitted by Waterworks. There is a large separate dressing room to complete the suite.

There are two additional bedrooms upstairs, one with red toile wallpaper and twin beds and the other with a full size antique iron bed and antique armoire. In between is a sitting room study with a paneled fireplace with gas logs and large flat screen TV over the mantel.  A bathroom with another Waterworks shower make these bedrooms a complete suite.

The house is about 4 miles from Washington Depot, the Washington Green, the Mayflower Inn and Spa, Winvian Spa, 3 miles from Lake Waramaug, Hopkins Vineyard, seven miles from Litchfield, and 8 miles to Kent.

Please call for availability.  All requests are confirmed by payment and a signed standard CT short-term lease contract.  Any occupancy of less than 30 days requires a 12% CT renter's tax.

About Sheila Sullivan

We live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the week We have a very busy and wonderful life in New York but really look forward to our escape to CT on the weekends where we can truly relax. We especially love entertaining as the house is perfect for it.

Sheila Sullivan purchased this house in 2003

Why Sheila Sullivan chose Washington

We have always loved Litchfield County and dreamed of having an old house some day. We appreciated the unique history of this house being built by one of the areas largest iron masters and also the fact that it was part of the Underground Railroad. The house was not typical of it's time but rather was designed as a manor house with it's large, beautifully-proportioned rooms and high ceilings. Unlike a lot of old homes that we looked at, this house is full of light with it's 7' tall windows downstairs and it feels very open.

What makes this house unique

It was our dream to buy an old home and restore it. We fell in love with this house after seeing just a picture of it. It was a true labor of love. The house has a rich and interesting history which we sought to preserve. The interior is painted with historical colors and is filled with many period antiques while absolutely comfortable. All the rooms are spacious with extra high ceilings and doorways so you always have a feeling of openness. The extra large kitchen is a joy to cook in with all the space one would ever need to cook great gourmet meals. The great room has double height ceilings and lots of windows on 3 sides so it's always flooded with sun. It's truly a special and unique home. The location is great too, as it is close to Kent, Litchfield, New Preston, the center of Washington and just a few miles from Lake Waramaug.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Many thanks to Sheila and Bill for sharing their charming house with us. The generosity of American hospitality was experienced as soon as we (a family of four from Australia) arrived, with Sheila and Bill warmly welcoming us to their property and their beautiful part of Connecticut. Not only did they add some decorative Christmas touches to the house for our stay, and tempt us upon arrival with a truly delicious Christmas Spice Cake ( from The Pantry - a definite Must Visit place in Washington Depot!) but they were also always available should the need arise. Spending three weeks here over Christmas made for some special memories as both the house and the region brought comfort and joy! No doubt everyone who stays here delights in the warmth and serenity that comes from being in such beautiful surroundings. Their home is a fabulous mix of comfort, luxury, artistry and history. It was always wonderful to 'come home' after a day exploring. We soon found ourselves falling under the spell of a New England Winter. Lots of scenic wanderings (and shopping!) around the quaint villages of New Preston, Washington, Litchfield, Woodbury, Essex (on the coast) and further north in Lenox and Stockbridge (home of the Norman Rockwell Museum) in Massachusetts, and Millerton ( described as 'one of the ten coolest small towns in America') in NY. There were also long rambles and hikes around Lake Waramaug and the surrounding countryside of Litchfield County and much, too much, ice cream from Arethusa Dairy in Bantam! Then there was the artisan bread from the Bantam Bread Co; hours browsing in the wonderful bookstores, notably The HickoryStick in Washington Depot; and trips to New York City (less than a two hour drive). There are also many places to eat in the area from the atmospheric George Washington Tavern, and White Horse Inn, to the diners and local village restaurants in Litchfield (where we always experienced friendly service along with varied and interesting menus) to the wonderful Bantam Market for everyday groceries and delicious prepared meals, to the fish 'market' just down the road with fresh seafood. Our time at Sheila and Bill's beautiful home, and being back in Connecticut, has now become a wonderful addition to our shared experiences as a family. A truly special place to stay!

Inviting, Spotless and Beautifully Decorated

  • 5 of 5

We were so happy to have discovered this beautiful gem in the CT countryside! The home is lovely -- both inside and out. If fact, the listing photos do not really do it justice. This is a gorgeous old house, lovingly restored and decorated with obvious care and talent. It is also a very comfortable house. From the moment you enter the mud room (the most gorgeous mud room I've ever seen) till you sink into the sumptuous down-filled pillows on the family room sofa, you will feel totally pampered. The bathrooms and bedrooms include quality linens and towels, and the kitchen is well-equipped and spacious enough for several cooks. And the dining room... well, the dining room is simply breathtaking!

Homeowner Sheila took the time to greet us on our arrival and show us the entire house, answering all of our questions and providing tips about where to eat out and what to see. My husband and I loved hiking down the surrounding country roads and at nearby Bee Brook, and exploring beautiful Litchfield. We visited White Flower Farms, The Glebe, and the Bellamy-Ferriday House. We wandered the shore of Lake Waramaug at dusk -- a beautiful sight indeed. And we may have over-indulged on the ice cream at Arethusa Farm and Dairy. :)

If you love the comfort and beauty, antiques and the outdoors, gardens and historic architecture, this is definitely the place for you!

So pleased to have visited ......!!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of five old friends (three from the West Coast of Canada and two from the UK) descended upon Forbes House and made this our base for relaxing and exploring Connecticut for a week after attending a wedding at nearby Washington. Despite staggered arrival times, our hostess Sheila was there to welcome all of us and thereafter was readily accessible by phone to answer any questions we had. Her beautiful character home was everything we had anticipated from reading about it on the VRBO website - and more. How difficult it is to describe the comfort and warmth of a home well-lived in through the ages that embraces its visitors. The clean spacious rooms, comfortable beds and linens, a well-stocked and equipped kitchen that begs to be the hub of group meal preparation amid laughter and conversation, thoughtful and pleasing decor with seating areas to spend quiet time, modern bathroom fixtures, and a barbeque equipment cupboard to excite and stimulate the outdoor eating senses - and we put the deck to good use in this way a great deal of the time. It was difficult to tear ourselves away from the house to carry out plans for visiting the nearby charming small towns and villages, exploring beautiful country lanes (the narrow and sometimes unpaved route from Kent through Bull Bridge to New Preston is a wonderful drive), and venturing further afield to Hartford and New Haven, both easily reachable within 90 minutes or so. We were unfortunately unable to secure a reservation for dinner at the highly rated Community Table restaurant, but delicious ice cream at nearby Bantam was easily obtained and oft repeated. A memorable week for all of us was made possible by Sheila's careful attention to detail in providing for her guests all the necessary comforts to create a welcoming and relaxing environment.

Marvelous home

  • 5 of 5

I have rented this house for my clients the last two years, and they all love the place.

The owners, who are incredibly hospitable and caring, have created a home that

exudes a warm excellence. If you want an environment that is rich in antique

and yet friendly and comfortable, you will not find a better place. Not only is it

clean and well-maintained beyond expectation, it is impeccable. I assure you,

you will not want to leave when your stay is over.

Wonderful country retreat

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we stepped into the delightfully atmospheric No 7, we knew we were in a much loved and beautifully restored home. After the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, we were thrilled to sink into the deep cosy sofa in the Great Room and idle our way through the numerous publications and books. We made a few sorties out – to Washington for lunch at The Pantry (so good, in fact, we went twice), a wonderful dinner at The Community Table and we even tried tasting nine different wines at the annual Hopkins Vineyard Wine Fair. There is so much to do and see in the area, but we just loved being back at the house - allowing the historic ambience and calm New England comfort to restore us.
