About Dottie Nelson

We have owned this beautiful property for more than 25 years. Our family has enjoyed family gatherings and group events here for a long time, and we are happy to share the opportunity with other groups so that they can experience the beauty and serenity of The Lodge at Oak Creek Ranch.

Dottie Nelson purchased this lodge in 1986

Why Dottie Nelson chose Santa Margarita

We bought this property in the mid-80s. It was an old Campfire Girl’s camp that Campfire no longer needed. Jeff’s sister was a Campfire board member who introduced us to it. Early years were all vision and planning. We slowly began making improvements from 2000 to 2009. We have controlled every detail of the development and continue to work each time we are here to make it a little better.

It enriches our lives to share this place with people, hoping that they leave with just a little more positive spirit. It is a wonderful place to just connect with people and nature in a world where those simple acts are challenging.

What makes this lodge unique

The remote location and serene setting, along with the fact that rental groups have exclusive use of the entire property, make Oak Creek Ranch the perfect location for corporate retreats, family reunions and other intimate gatherings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our group LOVED Oak Creek Lodge and hopes to return in greater number some day! We cooked, we ate, we swam, we played bocce, we had a craft table in the dining room that was occupied with one or more of us most of the weekend. We hiked the property, had lunch on Sunday at the Pozo Saloon where we regrouped after 5 of us hiked the Rinconada Trail (woof!). I did a little watercolor sketch of the barn while sitting on a bench in a nice shady spot. You must be SO PROUD of the ranch.

Epic property in a gorgeous outdoor setting

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot describe how awesome this place is...5 stars is not even close to enough! It's impossible to choose which aspect of the place is the most impressive: the various houses with their distinct charms and great decorations, the property itself with seemingly endless trails and perfect sunset views, or the complete privacy of it all.

My group was here for 3 days celebrating a college reunion...if we didn't have wives and kids to get back to I think we would have unanimously agreed to stay here forever! Plenty of beds to accommodate large groups, fun times playing games in the yard during the day and in the huge open barn at night, and legendary star-gazing after hours. The kitchen is professional grade...we had lots of fun cooking meals together and sitting around the dining room table telling stories.

Dottie was helpful throughout the rental process and always friendly when we spoke. I can't recommend this place enough for your next large getaway with family and/or friends! My group certainly hopes to stay here many more time over the years. Truly a special and unforgettable place. Thank you!!!

Amazing, absolutely amazing

  • 5 of 5

It was everything and more than we expected. A beautiful location for our family "Olympics" reunion. Four siblings and their spouses and children (18 in all) gathered from all over the country for some friendly competitions (ping pong, bocce, cornhole, archery, frisbee, pool, etc.). Everyone had a fabulous time and are eager to come to this same location again for our next Olympic games.

The property is amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful experience. We stayed at the ranch while celebrating our daughter and nephew’s graduation from Cal Poly. We had plenty of room for our entire family to stay. The barn and pool are wonderful. If you are looking for a large facility where everyone can stay under one roof and enjoy time away, look no further. This place is perfect! We all loved it and definitely want to stay again. Dottie is very easy to work with and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend. You will not be disappointed.

Another great visit to Oak Creek Ranch!

  • 5 of 5

Just back from another great visit to Oak Creek Ranch. Our group of eleven adults all enjoyed the comfortable, well-appointed lodge, the excellent leisure facilities, the delicious meals and the beautiful, secluded setting. Also, Brook's Mom's cakes were spectacular. :-D

Relaxing and well-equipped venue for tech retreat

  • 5 of 5

I recently organized a 21-person tech retreat for web developers and designers, and the Lodge at Oak Creek Ranch was the perfect venue for relaxation and conversation! We spent our days in group discussions, and we could easily fit the full group in the spacious lodge room or spread out to the porch, dining room, and barn loft for smaller breakout sessions. WiFi signal was strong in all of the shared spaces so attendees could get work done as needed. We all fit nicely at the two large tables in the dining room (which also has a whiteboard and corkboards), and our caterer was thrilled with the spacious and well-equipped kitchen.

Guests loved spending evenings relaxing around a campfire in a fire pit that sits on a patio between the lodge and the barn (firewood provided!). We hosted morning yoga classes in the studio above the pool bar (mats included!). The group enjoyed a sunset hayride to a scenic viewpoint not far from the ranch, and we spotted plenty of wildlife throughout the weekend. The pool was ginormous and would be fabulous in warmer months.

Dottie, the owner, was an absolute gem. She provided detailed documentation on sleeping arrangements so I could pair up roommates before the event, and it was clear from her questions and advice that she's worked with all sorts of groups from business retreats to family reunions. As an event organizer, I was thrilled to find all the nuts and bolts provided - linens, dishes, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc - with instructions on where to find things we might need during our stay. This was by far the best experience I've had with a rental property, and I would highly recommend the Lodge at Oak Creek Ranch to others!
