CASUAL COTTAGE CHARM, reminiscent of a New England beach house. Fairly recent renovations include: new kitchen and bathroom, new roof, new paint and hot tub.
'Hattie's Cottage' is located in charming Salmon Creek, a former fishing village, just north of Bodega Bay. It feels like Cape Cod.
You are just a 4-minute stroll to the beach. Walking around this quaint little town on small quiet streets, you'll appreciate that there is no highway between you and the beautiful north coast ocean and wide sand beach where you can walk for miles. You can walk south all the way to Bodega Head. On cold, windy days hiking around behind the dunes amidst the cypress hedgerows, ice plant and dune grasses is a special experience, also warm and away from the winds. A soon-to-be-completed coastal trail will enable you to walk (wheelchair accessible too) along the coastal plain from Salmon Creek to the Community Center, alittle over a mile away.
Sitting in your private hot tub within the large lovely garden, you will look out over the ocean, sand dunes, and the creek where it enters the Pacific; you will hear the surf. The shore birds abound.
Inside the cottage itself you will be warmed by the eco-friendly gas-log fireplace. You have full ocean views from kitchen, living room, dining, and bedroom.
Although our cottage is small, it is built for entertaining, with a large kitchen open to dining area and the garden beyond. In adjacent Bodega Bay you will find many good restaurants, and numerous Sonoma county wine-tasting venues are within a short and beautiful drive.
Sundays from 10- 2, May through October, drive a 1/2 mile south on Hwy 1 to the Bodega Bay Farmers Market for great local food and music!
Now you can take a hike on the just-completed Coastal Prairie Trail: a little over a mile of easy walking on decomposed granite, accessible, go from Keefe Avenue to the Dunes Campground and on to the Bodega Bay Community Center and the Nicholas Green Memorial.
You can actually walk to breakfast at The Bodeguita Restaurant, right next to the Community Center. How about some huevos rancheros?
So, come and relax, stick your feet in the sand, and shake off those city cares for a little while at Hattie's Cottage. It's fine to bring your pooch; our yard is fully fenced, just clean up after Fido.

We have owned Hattie's Cottage (named after our dog: an Egyptian Pharaoh Hound) for about 10 years now.
We live in another beach house nearby, so we can be available should any house problems arise during your stay.
Robin Hale purchased this cottage in 2007
We have been drawn to this quirky little village for years and years. It is like a place that time forgot, reminiscent of life before chain stores, high rises, and the pressures of modern life.
It is like a different world to come out here.
When you arrive in Salmon Creek your cares just seem to evaporate or get absorbed by the coastal fog......
We sit and gaze at the ocean a lot, since we can look at it from just about anywhere in the house. Walks along the beach and behind the dunes, especially early morning and at sunset are a special treat. We also enjoy walking our rambunctious dog around Salmon Creek village, enjoying all the bird life and seeing what the neighbors are up to.
Never a week goes by without a lunch time trip to Spud Pt Crab Company for their fabulous clam chowder.
For a touch of casual sophistication on the bay, it's fun to go to Gourmet au Bay in Bodega Bay for wine tasting; they have happy hour on Fridays.
Also, for a great culinary experience, dine at Terrapin Creek in the Blue Whale Center, just a half mile south.
Hattie's Cottage, light filled and spacious, feels like a lovingly created and cared for home rather than a tourist rental. Robin is obviously an artist--the decor is so tasteful and comfortable. The bed upstairs is just firm enough--super comfortable. The kitchen is equipped with new cabinets and new appliances plus every little thing you might need for cooking at home, and everything works! The lovely hosts, Robin and Randy (and Hattie the dog) live right across the street and are generous, available and responsive when needed while being completely respectful of visitors' privacy.
The amazing two mile white sand beach seen from the gorgeous picture windows both in the living and dining rooms is five minutes' easy walk from the house. It's different every day and inexplicably empty most of the time, even in the summer ... except for the many kinds of birds staging hysterical performance shows on the seashore and around the creek.
Lots to do in the area within short driving distance in any direction, if you're in an active mood. Robin put together a fantastic info book with up-to-date recommendations of where to eat and what to do to last you for weeks on end.
This time around, I spent three weeks here on a solo winter retreat just hanging out, walking the beach, and staring into space. By the end I basically wanted to move in and never leave. Not even to go out to my very favorite restaurant in a 50 mile radius, the Terrapin Creek Café.
We have stayed in five other places in Salmon Creek and Hattie's takes the Grand Prix!
My daughter and I and her two children spent two nights at Hattie's cottage. It could not have been more enjoyable. The setting is beautiful-- you can hear the waves crashing even with the windows closed. The cottage is very comfortable and cozy and filled with beautiful artwork. The kitchen is a dream, very open, with every imaginable utensil, pot or pan you could need. The yard and hottub were great and the closet held many beach toys for the kids. Very nice to come in chilled from the beach and turn on the little fireplace and plug in one of the many movies available. The feeling there is like being in Europe with narrow streets, away from the crowds, and simple pleasures, but with Bodega Bay close enough to get something at the store. The photos and description of Hattie's cottage were completely realistic, and it was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The beaches there are some of the most beautiful in CA.
Three of my girlfriends and I visited Hattie's cottage for a fun weekend trip! The cottage has picture windows to capture the beautiful view both in the living room and kitchen/dining room! The kitchen was nice and was newer and the house had charming touches throughout. The room with the double bunk was a little disappointing; the room is very small (maybe an old laundry or utility room?) and the bottom bed is actually on the floor and is very small. Thankfully, the couch in the living room was a pull out bed! This room would be great for small children, but really not ideal for adults. The spa was amazing and also captured the beautiful ocean view; we could watch the sun set from the spa! The only suggestion I would have for the owners would be to update the locks on the doors; the doors all lock fine, however, when it is locked it allows you to open the door from the inside still...which we didn't realize and we ended up locking ourselves out of the house very late one night! Other than that, the cottage was very nice and I would for sure stay there again! I did get the opportunity to meet Randy, one of the owners and he was so nice and friendly! :)
Spent a week at Hattie's cottage and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Loved watching the sunsets from the giant picture window. Loved falling asleep listening to the ocean with windows open on all four walls in the lookout tower bedroom (in the extremely comfortable bed). Loved walking the dogs through the neighborhood, admiring new and old homes, chatting with residents. Loved sitting in the hot tub with an umbrella during the pouring rain. Loved that the beach was a few steps away. Loved cooking in the well-equipped kitchen (including cast iron pans!) Easy, beautiful drives to Duncan Mills for lunch, Jenner for dinner, Point Reyes for shopping and the entire coast for mesmerizing views. Thank you!
Thank you for allowing us to stay at your charming cottage! We didn't want to leave! Loved the view, the garden and hot tub! Everything just comfy cozy! Can't wait to come back again!
The view of the ocean here is just spectacular. We loved the garden and just being able to sit out and relax. The spacious kitchen was a nice feature. Robin was a joy to work with.
San Martin, CA
Bodega Bay, one mile south along Highway 1, is a well-known tourist destination. The Visitors Center, adjacent to the Gas Station, has innumerable brochures about area activities, and Julianne will help you with any questions about what to do on your holiday. Kayak and paddle board rentals are popular, also fishing excursions (salmon and crab, rock fish) on commercial boats. Salmon Creek Beach is a sought-after surfer's destination. For the less athletic among you, there are 2 tasting rooms in town and innumerable restaurants, both culinary high-end and modest. There is a big coffee table guest book in our living room with details about all the local eateries, etc. For the kids, when they are not beach combing for shells or building sand castles, there are several gift shops with toys, salt-water taffy, and kites and banners to fly in our coastal winds. Should you happen to be visiting on a Friday, take the kids (of all ages, adults too) over to the Marine Lab for their public tour from 2-4 pm. The docents will give you a guided tour and talk about the work at the lab and you get to see tide pool activities, etc. Of course, if you are here to relax and get away from the stresses of your jobs and urban life, there is probably nothing more delightful than sitting right at home in "Hattie's Cottage" beautiful, lush garden and looking out to sea. If it's blustery out there, curl up inside on the couch, next to the gas-log fire and pick a book to read or a CD to listen to from our "lending library" bookshelf. The desk in the living room has games, cards and activities. Go out to eat at a local venue (highly recommend Terrapin Creek Cafe, Bluewater Bistro, or Drake's Lounge at The Duck Club), or
prepare your own dinner in our up-to-date, well equipped, and convenient kitchen; it's got everything but -alas- a dish washer, but that's what the husband and kids are for, right? For beautiful coastal scenery, drive either north or south on Highway 1. Or travel inland to Sebastopol area and check out some wine tasting rooms. Have a wonderful time!
