The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

  • 2 of 5

THE GOOD

Located on a beautiful piece of property with lovely views of the lake and volcano in front and steep hills and jungle behind.

Access to a fleet of kayaks and some beautiful paddling.

Owner/managers live on site.

Outdoor area is lovely.

THE BAD

No indoor living area, other than your bedroom. One bed is located in the kitchen, the other in an unattractive and rustic structure built onto the back of the casita.

Comfort is problematic when the sun sets and the wind blows, which it often does, sometimes at 80 mph. We were in bed more than 50% of the 37 days we spent there before 7 pm because it was the only way to stay warm.

The casita is not really as advertised: there is no jetted tub, nor is there a cd player or a video or a music library. There is no propane tank for the advertised a bar-b-que.

The casita is advertised as having 1.5 baths and 2 bedrooms. It sounded perfect for 2 friends. But one bed is in the kitchen along with the sink, dishes etc. and the other is in the small structure behind. There is really only one bathroom but the facilities are split in two – sink and toilet in what looks like a bathroom while the shower is in the small room with the 2nd bed. Awkward.

The door between the 2nd “bedroom” and the toilet does not shut. We mentioned it twice and were told that we just had to kick the door to get it to close.

There is no hot water in the kitchen or the bathroom sink. There is hot water in the shower on sunny days between noon and 5 pm.

The VRBO description also mentions a washer and dryer. But you do not have a washer and dryer - you have access to a washer once a week. And a clothesline.

The spa is really a massage table in a palapa.

THE UGLY

I have spent 4 months out of the last 2 years in Guatemala and have stayed in everything from a hostel to a budget room to a posh spa. I cannot say the same for this casita. The sheets, towels and pillowcases are faded and stained. My very old quilt (it appears in pictures taken many years ago) was peppered with mildew.

There is a fridge in outdoor kitchen but the freezer is full of the owners’ meat.

There was obvious black mold on the freezer bottom as well as the base of the water reservoir.

the clothing storage area for both bedrooms is located in that 2nd tiny bedroom – some shelves, a rod, a few hangers and some drawers, most of which have come off their railings. Inconvenient, awkward and ugly.

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

Our experience with Lee and Elaine exceeded expectations. Lake Atitlan is a unique and beautiful place that offers visitors an opportunity for the trip of a lifetime. Through their friendly support, we were able to realize this opportunity. From arranging transportation from the Guatemala City Airport to the lake, assisting in grocery purchases, designing and delivering wonderful tours/experiences and booking hotel reservations in Antigua, we were helped by Lee and Elaine from beginning to end. The accommodations were clean, comfortable and were exactly as pictured. We will remember this trip for the geographic awe of Lake Atitlan, the unbelievable cultural immersion with the Mayan people, and the friendly professionalism of our hosts, Lee and Elaine.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for about 3 days for the start of our honeymoon back in 2010. (Sorry this review is so late!) We had an amazing stay and Lee and Elaine were so helpful with communication before our arrival, even arranging for a driver to pick us up at the airport when we arrived in Guatemala to bring us to Panajachel. When we arrived, there was a basket of goodies awaiting us and with helpful information from them, we started planning a tour of the neighboring villages. Lee was an excellent tour guide. The spa facility is also an added bonus. The hiking right behind the cabin is an excellent workout, with some gorgeous views of the lake and valley! Overall, an awesome stay with really great hosts!

Great rental, great people

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights and had a fantastic and unforgettable trip. This property is simply amazing. Killer views of the lake and all its volcanos, amazing stars at night, an outdoor kitchen literally 30 yards from the lakeshore, kayaks in the front yard to take out for a morning paddle with a cup of coffee...seriously, what more could you really ask for?

In addition to providing a fantastic and incredibly affordable place, they were extremely helpful with arranging a lot of transportation logistics, not just around the lake, but also up near Tikal, where we headed after we left the Atitlan area. We did most of our exploring on our own (our choice), but the advice that Lee and Elaine gave regarding places to see and things to do was priceless. In addition to being great guides and renting out a fabulous home, they were laid back, fun, and pleasant to spend a little time with each night before dinner. Our trip far exceed our expectations and a great deal of that we owe to Lee and Elaine.

We will definitely return and would recommend this to anyone.
