A Train Runs Through It

  • 2 of 5

Everything about this place is great. The cottage, the lake, the property, the view - all highly recommended. BUT if your idea of a vacation includes restful sleep, you may want to look elsewhere. A train track, a mere 50 feet from the bedrooms, plays host to at least one very long freight train each night. And by night, I mean between 1:30 and 4:00 AM.

We were booked for four nights but had to leave after three to catch up on our sleep at home.

Owner's Response: Dear Keith, There have been two CN RAIL incidents in the last year where the train cars fell off the tracks and into Gates Lake. At the time of your stay the CN RAIL company had only just repaired the tracks, as a result there were more trains to catch up with the delays to their schedule, unfortunately one or two (mostly) at night. There was also more general repair activity on the tracks dealing with the clean up at that time. This is the first complaint we have had about the train since first rental 12 years ago. Best Regards, Mike

Peaceful and very private cottage - excellent views!

  • 5 of 5

Location of this cottage is excellent - surrounded by mountains and trees and a short walk to the lake. There is absolutely so much space to roam around, play badminton, frizbee and other field games. Very quiet and serene (a train passes by once a day though sometimes in the wee hours so it was startlng at first, but it's just a short time and you get used to it).

The dock by the lake is awesome - provides great view of the mountains and the lake. The free use of the canoe and pedal boat was a bonus; you can stay in the lake to enjoy the 360deg view of the surroundings (we didn't try the row boat as it was a bit big and heavy to put on the lake). There's a nice portajohn by the lake.(Note: We drove our car mindfully from the cottage to the lakeside as an alternative to walking for 5 mins across the property.)

Cottage is spacious - there are bugs and insects which is part of its ambience; our insect repellent was very useful. The windows have screens to prevent the bugs from coming in and absolutely helpful to keep doors close. Kitchen is equipped with microwave, oven/stove, coffee maker, kettle, tons of pots and pans, dishes and utensils (no toaster oven, only toaster). BBQ grill was great.

There's only one washroom in the cottage with shower; there are mini-toiletries (no hairdryer though at the time of our stay). Decor of the cottage is a bit 'spooky' for me (maybe not to others) - different masks, tribal statues, unconventional framed artwork, and the like around the cottage. We spent most of our time in the lake and in the field so it was okay - the great points outweigh this one aspect.

We tried to do some stargazing but it was more than half moon so it was still bright even after 12 midnight; stars were still visible in spite of the forest fire smokes from other remote BC areas)

The 'entrance' to the location is a bit tricky - you won't easily notice it when driving in the highway. Good thing the owner provided detailed instructions of landmarks to know you missed it - yes, we missed it and had to go back a few minutes' drive. Definitely not good to go there in the dark - you will surely miss it.

Owner Mike was very good responding to emails. Overall, the location is absolutely great! We even saw eight deers eating the grass and the leaves from the apple trees very close to the cottage; our (adult) kids were able to take videos and photos with them in close proximity. Worth the price for our family of four!

Beautiful Setting!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed the cabin and the surrounding property. It was a great place to stay and unwind after hiking and biking near Pemberton (a 20 minute drive). We were there in a hot part of the summer and wished we would have had some fans to help cool off, but other than that, we thought it was ideal. The nearby falls were amazing! One last thing - the kitchen ware (knives and such) were not in very good shape, but we didn't expect much given the rustic nature of the cabin.

Perfectly peaceful!!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was the perfect place to get some much needed change of scenery from the Arizona desert. The property was beautiful and peaceful as it was completely snow covered and the lake was frozen and also snow covered. The cabin was cozy and warm from the wood stove. There was also a lot to explore in the area with a relatively short drive. The views on the drives alone are amazing, so you may just keep driving and driving!

Would definitely recommend for a winter vacation!!

Peaceful, one-of-a-kind place

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I had the good fortune to stay for 5 weeks at this beautiful, peaceful, one-of-a-kind place. The log cabin was clean, roomy, well appointed, offering a comfortable and cozy place for rest and relaxation. We enjoyed walking, canoeing, swimming, and some nearby hikes as well. The hike to the nearby waterfall was well worth the effort - it was stunning! The owners were wonderful - friendly, and responsive to our questions, and when they came to stay at their cabin on the lake, were respectful of our privacy and space. It was a great stay - highly recommended! (Note: The nearest store is in Pemberton so you need to bring all your supplies with you.)

Quiet and Private

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 5 enjoyed a comfortable and relaxing Labour Day long weekend getaway at Mike's Gates Lake Log Cabin. With so much private outdoor space there is lots to do; we enjoyed time at the private beach area, canoeing on the lake, swimming, hiking to a beautiful waterfall, and watching the family of deer come feed on the apples from the trees in the yard. The cabin is well equipped with all the cooking utensils you may need - the only thing we were missing was coffee filters, which Mike was kind enough to supply for us. A reusable basket filter for the coffee machine would be a good addition to the kitchen.
