Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

An environmentally minded house located at the top of Ajax Peak, overlooking Coral Bay and the BVI, High House offers a quiet home to come to after a long day of fun in the sun. Located above the quaint town of Coral Bay, and an easy five minutes from beautiful beaches, Ajax Peak is the perfect place to be; the tradewinds provide a pleasant cooling breeze all day and the morning sunrise is an incredible sight. The shade in the late afternoon encourages drinks on the deck for very colorful sunsets and incredible views. The gardens have many native plants, flowers, and fruit trees. Often, Hummingbirds and Bananaquits visit the bird feeders, and hawks can be seen soaring above.

Completely off the grid of water and power, the house uses solar energy to power everything inside, and it has done so since 1978. The water is collected via rainwater on the roof, and is stored below the house. Rest assured, there is no shortage of power and water, with a full size refrigerator and freezer, four burner stove, dishwasher, and many other modern appliances. In case of many shady days, a backup generator away from the house will come on and you won’t even hear it. High House allows you to take a Caribbean vacation and relax while making a lighter carbon footprint than at a busy resort.

Why Martha Hollander chose Upper Carolina

High House is an amazing house. Check out how comfortable life can be living off the grid. The house operates on 3 kilowatts of solar energy, a wind generator, and 24 deep cell storage batteries.

It is not difficult to use our natural resources like the sun and wind to live a comfortable environmentally friendly life.:)

High House offers a complete kitchen, a complete entertainment center, and a hot tub to enjoy after a long day at the beach or an evening under the stars.

What makes this villa unique

High House has a very open feel with incredible views. The whole front of the house is sliding glass doors opening out to a deck overlooking Coral Bay, East End of St. John, and all the British Virgin Islands. Facing Easterly, the tradewinds blow throughout the year providing a nice cool temperature all year round. High House is also located at the top of Ajax Peak at the end of the road on a 5 acre estate providing the utmost in privacy. Operating totally off the grid, High House never loses power even if the rest of the island is in the dark.

this property delivers St John

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 12 year old daughter and I stayed the week of Christmas. Hands down one of the best rentals on the island. This was our third time to the island and High House is just the best. If you don't love what this house has to offer, not only are you in the wrong type of house...you"re on the wrong island. Thank you Martha.

This place rules! Best views on Saint John. Seriously.

  • 5 of 5

On our third trip to St. John we were lucky enough to stay at High House. Perched all the way atop a mountain, the house is perfectly nestled into a dense tropical forest setting. The house itself gives the impression of being sturdy and built with care. It is cantilevered out over a steep bank and has a wrap around porch that provides endless views to the surrounding hillsides, bays and adjacent islands.

High House is outfitted with anything and everything you would need for your stay. Though the house is off the grid in every way, it is by no means primitive. The power was stable, the showers were hot, the toilets capable of whatever you can throw at em and there is even Wi-Fi! There is ample cookware, a dishwasher, washer/dryer, stereo, tv and cable, plenty of towels and even a hot tub with colored disco lights (highly recommended after a day at the beach and especially awesome during rain storms).

In summary, this place is the best. A great value. Do not hesitate. We will be back next year.

Stunning views, nice house

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I stayed a week at the end of May '13. Not once did we fail to be awestruck by the view. No picture comes close to capturing the panorama - easily 180 degrees. You can see from the West end of Tortola on the left to straight down Francis Drake Channel to the hills on the far side of Coral Bay on the far right. The deck is the best, but every room has a great view. There had been enough rain to keep all the hills bright green. Coffee on the deck in the morning - Wow! what a way to start the day. Couldn't help but relax and be in a good mood looking out at the islands.

The layout of the house is excellent. One bedroom and bath on either side of the central living area provided decent privacy. The main deck runs along the entire house. The kitchen is slightly awkward. Check out the picture. The prep area is a step down in an enclosed "horseshoe". The pantry, fridge, dishes & microwave are up and out of the enclosure. Just took a day or so to get used to it. Being "off the grid" resulted in our first island vacation where we never lost power once. The deck furniture lacks a table suitable for eating a meal (a minor flaw, as the main table inside has almost the same view). You can see houses down the hill, but you really have no neighbors - very private.

The house is very well maintained, very clean and fully equipped (both for living in the house and for the beach), but a little "tired". The flip side, is that if the furniture was new and the kitchen had granite & stainless the rental would easily be twice the price. Did I mention the view? That alone is worth the price. The owners are down the road if a problem pop up - none did.

You must rent a car. Way up the hill (paved roads right to the house, easily navigated at night) with nothing in walking distance. Coral Bay is a 5+ minute drive. Pretty good location for getting to any of the beaches. You will have to drive to Cruz Bay for any decent grocery shopping (Starfish Market was excellent).

Stunning location on the quiet side of the island. Very highly recommended.

Perfect Get Away

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I along with our children (7+9) have spent the last two winter vacations (10/12 days) here and could not have found a better place to relax and spend quality time with each other. The care takers are exceptional and have been very accommidating. We love spending the day at the many beaches STJ offers and at night time we use the BBQ and just enjoy the huge deck with the priceless view of Coral Bay and the BVI. It is a short ride to Donkey Junction and Coral Bay if you want to get something to eat and have a drink. Being at the top of the hill allows for cooler nighs and a nice breeze. The house is equipped with everything you need so pack light and just enjoy. Can't wait for Feb 13'!

We'll be back

  • 5 of 5

Our 5th year on the island, and we've stayed in a different place every year. The pictures on line do not begin to reflect the fabulous views. Private, but close to our favorite snorkeling places. We experienced an outage of the cable one evening and it was fixed the next am. Equipped with everything. We have just ordered a hot tub like the one at High House.

What a View!

  • 5 of 5

High House is a wonderful place to be when you are on St. John. The view is spectacular and the breezes are refreshing. Sitting on the wrap around front porch overlooking Coral Bay is a relaxing place to be at any time of the day. The house is clean, comfortable and since the bedrooms are on opposite sides of the main room, it offers plenty of privacy for 2 couples. Martha and Peter are exceptional hosts - meeting us at the dock and offering wonderful suggestions for things to do and see. We loved the eco-friendly environment and it is a very peaceful place to be. I would highly recommend this property to anyone especially if you want privacy, comfort and a view that is the best on the island.
