Cozy Cottage in Coral Bay

  • 5 of 5

Close to everything. The north shore beaches are about a 10 minute ride. Quick ride to shores near Salt Pond Bay. Hansen bay is about 10 min. Never really needed to go to Cruz Bay. Coral Bay has a few good restaurants and you can walk to Aqua Bistro and the Dolphin Market from the cottage. We have a family of 4 and it was a good size for us. The kids stayed in the loft so we didn't even need the second bedroom. John took us out on the sail boat and the kids loved it! My son (7) was a bit nervous and John had him laughing the whole time! Thanks! The hot tub was a great every night under the stars. We had a great time once again in St. John.

Best vacation we have ever had

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and two of my girlfriends stayed in this cute little villa for a week and it could not have been better ! The rock house was just as nice as the pictures and had every thing we needed . Clean and soft linens and big beautiful beach towels . Beds were comfortable and air conditioners were perfectly cool. The second private bedroom suite with its private entrance was perfect for the girls and very private . We stayed at Cinnamon Bay last year and Frenchmans Reef and this was so much better. Coral Bay had wonderful restaurants if we didn't want to use our fully equipped kitchen and eat on the very private patio with a view of the bay and boats. The long trip from California was worth the sleepless night and we would go back as soon as I could.

We really enjoyed our time at Villa Calabreeze!

  • 4 of 5

Great location for us as we love the beaches near by. Restaurants and store very close. Villa well equipped with everything we needed. We loved the porch and spent most of our time there. Gazing at the stars from the hot tub was great. Need a 4 wheel drive for sure due to the steep driveway....but it's short! I found the owners to be very helpful and accommodating. Missing the beautiful palms, plants, birds and breezes already!

Not what we thought it would be like

  • 1 of 5

I stayed there with my husband and our daughters family and have to say I would not go back to this rental!! The views that are shown in the pictures of the rental are very deceiving to say the least. From the upper deck all you can see if overgrown vegetation and a small section of the bay and the lower deck looks over what may appear to be a salvage yard. We were shown around by the owners wife and when we got to the lower level where the second bedroom was along with the washer & dryer we noticed an "out of order" sign on the washer. When asked about it we were told that it just broke the day before we arrived and would be fixed as soon as possible. That did not happen we had to call the owner to repair it so we could wash our clothes seeing we tried to pack light. After we did 2 loads for 6 people the out of order sign went right back on it and was not fully repaired for several more days. In the review they also do not tell you that both the machines are coin operated requiring $1.50 for each load! It is not easy to find coins on a small island

The first morning when we woke we noticed that refrigerator was not cold and we were afraid all the food we bought would spoil We called the owner left a message with his wife and headed to the beach, when we returned it was still not cold. The owner did not show till later that night, when he saw it was not cold he told us we must have left it open too long when we were putting away the food. He then brought up another (older fridge) to see if it would get cold, which it did not but was on our deck for several days. He did end up getting a new one but by then the fridge was finally cold.

The third night there we decided to grill, well we were not half way done cooking when the gas ran out! Again another call to the owner who brought a new tank the next night, after we had to finish cooking our supper in the house oven. I would have thought these things would have been checked before our arrival.

There were several other small things that happened that we were able to overlook, but I would not ever go back to this villa!!

Owner's Response: I would like to respond to this review. As far as the "out of order" washer. The water would not shut off from filling the tub, and would continue to run and pour out on the floor. The machine needed a new sensor. John offered to help them because he could manually turn it on and off, which he did for the 2 loads mentioned, and he told them he would help again if they wanted to do more. He did put the sign up as a reminder that the machine was not working properly. As for the quarters needed to run the machine, I give them to anyone who needs them. This group filled the already cold refrigerator to the max with several cases of Warm beer along with their food. We did bring in a used one, but the one in the house did get cold again. When we inquired from maintenance people from other houses, we were told that it often happens when people put too much warm beer at once, it pulls all the coldness into trying to chill the beers.

Villa Calabreeze - Our Vacation Disaster!

  • 1 of 5

After reading the previous good review on this budget accommodation I had high hopes for it. Our stay at Villa Calabreeze lasted for 4 nights. We had booked it for 10 nights. First, a minor point, the view represented in the pictures does not exist. Directly in front of and onto the porch extremely large foliage is growing that totally obstructs any view or breeze there may be. Now for the big points. The a/c in the bedroom was broken and has been for some time. John, the owner told us to run it on "fan" because the noise it makes "bothers them" (their house is directly above Calabreeze). It literally rattled the window, did nothing to cool the room and so we just shut it down. There are fans, but really with the entire porch blocked allowing no air in, that bedroom was really hot. On the second evening we started noticing the cockroaches in the kitchen cupboard, drawers and then in the bedroom(our daughters downstairs bedroom too). On night 4 when my husband had something crawling on him during the night, we decided to leave. the next morning he went up to their house to talk to John and Cindy his wife came out of their house. He told her about the cockroaches and the a/c and said that we were leaving and she said that they had a death in their family and John was out making travel arrangements back to the States. She said to listen for Johns motorcycle and talk to him when he returns and then she said "I can't handle this and turned and left my husband standing in the driveway". Not knowing how long he was going to be and not wanting to sit and wait for him and intrude on them when they were dealing with a death, we packed up, left the keys with a note and left. We called once during the rest of our stay but got no answer so we waited until our return home to call again. One call to Cindy who screamed "No Refunds-stop harassing us!" and then slammed the phone on my husband and one call to John two days later who blamed us for leaving after he had "fixed" the problems. He said "No Refunds" and wouldn't even let my husband speak, sounding very perturbed that we had even bothered calling him. He took absolutely ZERO responsibility for the problems and also slammed the phone on my husband. We found alternate accommodations but lost quite a bit of money in the process. How can you rent your place to someone with cockroaches and then be surprised when they leave?

Owner's Response: In response to this review, the review written by the wife is a complete exaggeration of what the husband told me when he announced they had to leave the house. (This conversation happened less than an hour after learning that my husband's mother had passed away) His complaint to me was that his daughter saw a couple roaches, and the AC units were not cold enough. I did ask his to wait and talk to John who was due home shortly. When he came home, they were gone. He immediately worked on the AC units, sprayed for bugs. The exterminator also came and sprayed. (Upon clean-up afterward, there were 3 dead roaches found) Not the infestation claimed in the review. I answered a call from him which came immediately after I walked in the door from the funeral. Never did I scream at him, and never did I slam the phone (how can you slam a cell phone?) They left the house without giving us a chance to address their issues. As far as overgrown foliage, some people enjoy the greenery and flowers, and the privacy they create. We could have easily cut it back if they requested it, but that was never mentioned to us. At this time, there are new AC units in each bedroom (split-units instead of window units) Thank you for listening.

Wonderful Week

  • 4 of 5

Our party of two couples enjoyed our stay at Calabreeze. The quiet side of the island and the town of Coral Bay were great for us. The house was clean and comfortable, and the owners were friendly and unobtrusive, happy to answer questions. Our day sail with Pebbles/Killer with mangrove snorkeling at Hurricane Hole (starfish colony, colorful coral, anemone) was one of the highlights of the week. The bedroom AC units were a plus during a warm week; they were a bit loud but helped block the noise of the all-night roosters! Relaxing every evening on the deck after dinner was a delight. The first couple of driveway adventures were white-knuckle events, but our intrepid driver and 4-wheel drive jeep turned it into entertainment as the week progressed. We enjoyed snorkeling all over the island, but our best was a late afternoon snorkel at Maho Bay (eel, rays, and turtles). We recommend Pickles in Paradise for breakfast, lunch fixings, and wifi. Indigo Grill had good dinner, outdoor seating, and very good pizza. Overall, Calabreeze and Coral Bay are a winning pair on St. John.
