Fly fish the fabulous Elk River and its back fork then come back to your stunning mountain cabin to crystal clean air and the best-tasting spring water on earth. Mountain-top views set within a gorgeous hardwood forest on 18 acres with no fencing. Lumber companies conveniently leave a great 1 mile hard-packed gravel road from the main highway 15 and the surrounding virgin forest creates utter privacy.
You may want to try the white water rafting about 30 minutes away or just stay on site for hiking or summer sightings that include deer and fawns, squirrels, birds and fields of butterflies. When our children were young they'd roof-watch the wildlife that didn't come into the clearing, and the on-site blueberries in summer and apples in the fall ensure bear and cub sightings nearby.
Only 45 minutes to Snow Shoe for high life, restaurants, skiing, or gambling. An hour away, Elkins is a college town with a black powder museum and lots of live music festivals. Wander the West Virginia-priced (inexpensive) antique shops with terrific craftsmanship that can only be taught down the generations. Each West Virginia town has a heritage weekend where relations near and far visit for a town family reunion -- newcomers welcome.
Remind yourself and the kids how life was ''back when.''
The cabin (called a ''camp'' in the mountains) was lovingly hand-crafted from 26 kinds of timber by a master carpenter/hippie. They had their first child in the only building a barn at a time when many city dwellers were fleeing suburbs. There is central air, radiant heating if you'd rather, a grill and smoker, a fire pit, unlimited hard line calls, a new television with satellite, a washer/dryer/microwave, a new shower-tub, games, and plenty of books for reading during your stay.
We bought the house in 1980 and the five kids love it, but as they started having families on their own and moved away we decided to rent the house out in 2008. I have a hotel management background so we have really enjoyed getting to know guests on a better basis than a one-night stay, especially the people who come year after year and the guest comments ... we made the right decision to share the family experience.
Donna purchased this house in 1984
We come for the great Elk River fly fishing and the grapes, blueberries, raspberries, rose bud roses (edible) and apple tress were already planted by the original builder, a carpenter.
We have rituals -- food is cheap, time stretches, the porch is huge and the television doesn't get turned on. We play Country & Western music, get up early for fly fishing or hunting, then just sit lazily and talk or play board games ... the pace is part of the fun. And sleep late!
We added a booster but the cell reception was ok in the kitchen ... tell your boss the service was non-existent or you would have called him back. I'd tell my Mother but she knows the hard line number from the summer she stayed and arranged everything for us, labeling all the sheets, cataloging the apple trees! What a help.
This was the perfect setting for our annual family fishing trip. We loved the lodge and I'll have Patsy Cline playing in my head now every time I tie a fly. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your little slice of heaven. Life Truly is Good!
We loved this house! The craftsmanship is fantastic. Also the property is so beautiful and so secluded. Just what we were looking for. The longer we were there, the longer we wanted to stay. The area is beautiful and we visited some familiar places once again. It's so nice to know that one can truly "get away". It's like being a pioneer with all the amenities! Thank you so much for opening your home to us. As an added bonus we got to meet you.

I’m finally getting around to my review for our stay in November! We absolutely loved our stay and hope to come back. The house was very homey and comfortable although the dogs aren’t fans of spiral steps! But many cottages have them as they save room, and we all managed fine. The front porch is wonderful, and I framed quite a few cool photos in those tulip cutouts. Awesome fall view too. The kitchen was very well stocked, and we had no problem at all with the composting toilet, what a great idea! My only suggestion would be some outdoor lighting – we looked everywhere for the switch that would light up the house like in the pic and never found one.
The very best part was being able to hike right out the door… even being able to hike to a fire tower - that just cannot be beat! The leaves were still quite colorful for the first weekend of November, and the trees were gorgeous. The dogs and I hiked on property every morning (we were enthralled with the cool cottage up the lane) and then after breakfast our entire gang ventured out to the surrounding countryside to explore. (Make sure you check out Holly River State Park – beautiful falls and trail to Potato Knob.) After hiking and exploring all day, we would head back to the house for some relaxation and good food. I sure do love West Virginia.
Peaceful. Detailed directions made this place easy to find. Spacious. We spent most of our time on the wonderful shady and large front porch. Clean. Eco-friendly composting toilet and truly no smell. Refreshing spring water! Truly a gem just a short distance (11 miles) from Webster Springs which has a grocery store and several restaurants. Make a point to eat at The Custard Stand (52 flavors of soft serve ice cream and a delicious hot dog chili sauce).
We have a great time in the RUSTIC retreat. The cabin is not luxurious, basic and had all the essentials. Kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc. Bath towels, etc also well stocked. We hiked the logging road every day and even star gazed at night. Wildlife viewing was terrifice. Apples and berries were not yet in season, but the promise was there.
Thank you Donna for your kind assistance and a great stay!

Another great trout outing in Webster county! My group of four have stayed at this cabin five times and enjoyed each trip. We are all WV natives and love the opportunity to be outdoors. This year started out with eight inches of snow the first day and ended with four days of weather in the 70s. The owners are always updating and that is appreciated. This year they replaced the bathtub, added a shower door and a new stereo. If you are looking for a place to stay with no neighbors, 17 acres, a comfortable cabin with full kitchen and multiple bedrooms this is the place for you. We obviously would not return yearly if we were not satisfied. Oh yes, Donna is the best!
check for the Elkins music festivals, ramp and town homecomings, they are all over West Virginia in the fall!
