About Ramsey White
I am a retired dentist and currently the Director of the College for Older Adults at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. My wife is a retired museum director and the author of two books on the material culture of our region - 'Great Road Style' (University of Virginia Press) and 'Back Country Makers' (University of Tennessee Press). We both love old houses and local art. This property reflects those interests.
Ramsey White purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Ramsey White chose Abingdon
Abingdon is a beautiful small town in Virginia's highlands. It has a large historic district with many restored 19th century homes and commerical structures. My wife and I live in the district and have restored several homes in it. When this adorable Queen Anne cottage came on the market 3 years ago, we could not resist. We have basically left the cottage as it was when built in 1906, but added modern amenities. We look forward to moving in it ourselves when we 'downsize' at some point in the future.
What makes this Cottage unique
Located on the eastern edge of Abingdon's historic district, Summers Cottage is within easy walking distance of six restaurants, the Barter Theatre, the Virginia Creeper Trail (biking and walking)and other local attractions. One can take in Abingdon's historic district and Southwest Virgina's scenic beauty while staying in a home, and enjoying a small town, but cosmopolitan, atmosphere.

Wonderful location near restaurants and shopping. Charming home, well appointed.
Very nice property
The cottage is well appointed, comfortable, and well located. We enjoyed our stay very much and we hope to return.
This house is 100+ years old, but has been updated with modern amenities. It has old fireplaces in each room and some beautiful old windows. Old windows tend to be drafty windows (just FYI) but the central heating worked wonderfully. The beds were comfy and plenty of extra blankets & pillows were available. The 2 bathrooms were handy. If you are a light sleeper, this is probably not the property for you. It sits on a main thoroughfare with lots of traffic, including police, ambulaces, etc. There are also train tracks close by and the trains can be heard inside. It is close to several nice restaurants, groceries, and a Walmart within 10 minutes. Rain, just 2 doors down, was a perfect New Years Eve choice for dinner! (but we REALLY loved Bone Fire BBQ a few blocks away) The owner, Ramsey White, was fabulous! He was easy to communicate with and was very accommodating to us. We had a red eye flight in from California and he graciously allowed us into the property early to rest before we met up with our family. Thank you for a very comfortable, very enjoyable stay, Ramsey!
Cute cottage in a great walkable location to entertainment, restaurants and shops. Ride your bike a few blocks to the beginning of the Virginia Trail...don’t have a bike? Rent one on your way to the trail. Once you arrive, you do not have to get in your car until you leave. We have been to Abingdon several times, but this cottage was not available. This will be our first property to check on our next trip.
Weekend Getaway to Abingdon
We loved staying at Summers Cottage and hope it becomes part of our annual trips to Abingdon. It is cozy, cute, and convenient to everything downtown Abingdon has to offer. We loved being able to walk to restaurants, Barter theatre, and even the VA Creeper Trail.
Summers cottage is located three to four blocks from the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Barter Theatre and the Martha Washington Inn.
