About Ramsey White

I am a retired dentist and currently the Director of the College for Older Adults at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. My wife is a retired museum director and the author of two books on the material culture of our region - 'Great Road Style' (University of Virginia Press) and 'Back Country Makers' (University of Tennessee Press). We both love old houses and local art. This property reflects those interests.

Ramsey White purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Ramsey White chose Blue Ridge Highlands

Abingdon is a beautiful small town in Virginia's highlands. It has a large historic district with many restored 19th century homes and commerical structures. My wife and I live in the district and have restored several homes in it. When this adorable Queen Anne cottage came on the market 3 years ago, we could not resist. We have basically left the cottage as it was when built in 1906, but added modern amenities. We look forward to moving in it ourselves when we 'downsize' at some point in the future.

What makes this cottage unique

Located on the eastern edge of Abingdon's historic district, Summers Cottage is within easy walking distance of six restaurants, the Barter Theatre, the Virginia Creeper Trail (biking and walking)and other local attractions. One can take in Abingdon's historic district and Southwest Virgina's scenic beauty while staying in a home, and enjoying a small town, but cosmopolitan, atmosphere.

Nice place but needs some cleaning

  • 3 of 5

Pros:

-Couldn't ask for a better location. It's within walking distance of all major attractions. Only 50 yards to the closest restaurant(Rain).

-Very charming older home which is a good representation of the homes in town. I appreciated the history that came with the house and the 100 year old "barn" out back.

Cons:

-We didn't have to look hard to tell the house hasn't had a "deep cleaning" in a long time. The shower was just flat out not acceptable. There was mildew/dirt on the door to the shower and the floor was pretty bad as well.

-The downside to the great location is the fact that it's right on Main st. I never would have thought such a small town could produce so much traffic. Road noise at night made sleep difficult at times. I can't fault the owner for this though. I should have considered this before booking.

With some cleaning I think most people would be happy but I will say that we would not stay here again. We paid over $600 for 2 nights and really didn't feel we got our money's worth. I will stay at The Martha next time we visit.

Owner's Response: I have vacillated whether or not to reply to this review, but decided I needed to because it is a pretty damning review. First, Mr. Mathews and his party appeared to be slightly out of sorts/unfriendly upon their arrival and I think this affected their view for the rest of the weekend. To say that the "shower was just flat out not acceptable" is a gross hyperbole and a matter of opinion - there is a drip tray 1/4" wide at the inside-bottom of the shower door that did have some mildew in it, but one literally had to go looking for it to find it, which I think Mr. Mathews did. And, his party appeared to have used the shower the entire weekend with no problems. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned after each guest and I do not know what Mr. Mathews means by a "deep cleaning". The house is over 110 years old and cannot be made to look like a sterile motel room. My housekeeper is incensed!!! His comments on the noise is the first time anyone in over seven years has ever mentioned it. And, I wish to break down what Mr. Mathews paid. He really paid $292.00 per night, but that was for two couples - $146.00 per night per couple for a five room house with a complete kitchen is, I feel, certainly worth the money. When his party of four goes to Martha Washington Inn next time, he will pay about twice that for two nights, and will not be able to haul in numerous coolers laden with food and drink. I wish everyone would love my Victorian cottage, but alas that can not happen. The Martha Washington Inn is a lovely place and I hope Mr. Mathews enjoys his next stay there. Ramsey White, owner

Our week at Summers Cottage was wonderful. Location was perfect for Barter Theater & Creeper Trail!

  • 5 of 5

We love vintage properties and felt right at home. The cottage is very comfortable and well-equipped. We cooked in some meals, but took full-advantage of wonderful and nearby restaurants!! Don't miss the Barter Theater plays. Abingdon is a treasure and Summers Cottage is a comfy home away from home!

Experience Abingdon

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed in this house while participating in Bike Virginia. It was a terrific choice.

Within walking distance of everything in Abingdon, the house is a perfect base for exploring the area.

A very old home that has been lovingly restored and updated, it was spotless, tastefully decorated and well-appointed.

The kitchen featured all modern conveniences. We were able to prepare meals and comfortably entertain friends for cocktails.

The two bathrooms had likewise been redone with the latest fixtures.

A stacked washer/dryer in one of the bathrooms was also a great convenience.

We were able to securely store bicycles in the old horse and buggy building out back.

We had cycled the Virginia Creeper trail a number of times from Damascus and had always wanted to stay in Abingdon. This was the perfect place to do it. The Creeper Trail is several blocks away.

Ramsey was a most accommodating and helpful host as well as a charming guy.

His Coffee shop, Zazzy Z's is a short walk from the house and a funky little place that must be experienced while in Abingdon.

We enthusiastically recommend this property.

Relaxing Cottage

  • 4 of 5

My family enjoyed the Abingdon cottage after a long bike ride down the Virginia Creeper Trail. It is conveniently located to nice restaurants and other town attractions. You really feel the small town atmosphere with a vintage but comfortable surroundings. The cottage had all the amenities but without the need to check-in to a nice hotel.
