Verona is one of the main tourist destinations in north-eastern Italy, thanks to its artistic heritage, several annual fairs (Vinitaly, Fieracavalli, Marmomacc and many others), shows and operas, such as the Opera Festival in the Arena, the ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans.

Because of the value and importance of its many historical buildings, mostly of Roman and Medieval ages, Verona has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, Verona is the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Verona's Natural history museum contains one of the most valuable collections of fossils and archaeological remains of Europe. Castelvecchio Museum features a collection of sculptures, statues and paintings in a magnificent castle built in 1354-1356.

About Tommaso Peruzzi

This villa was bought by my great-grandparents in 1929. Now it's my duty to preserve it in good shape and to share it with those who appreciate this kind of mansion and look for the charm and tranquility of the Italian countryside. I had great days staying here with my grandfather when I was a child, and I hope that you will be able to have such a good time too.

Tommaso Peruzzi purchased this villa in 1929

Why Tommaso Peruzzi chose San Martino Buon Albergo

The villa is located in the countryside in the eastern part of Verona. While the property is surrounded by vineyards of Valpolicella wine DOC production area, it has also easy connections to the motorway, to the airport, and to the cities of Verona, Venice, Padua, Mantua, and Vicenza. Lake Garda is also easily reachable in about 30 minutes, and with the new high speed railway lines also Florence and Milan are an easy destination for a daily trip. Guests come here to spend a vacation in a true piece of history, and also for many activities like food and wine tours, art history, museums, Opera, and so on.

What makes this villa unique

Are you tired of hotels that look pretty much all the same? Have you had enough of cold, impersonal courtesy? Do you appreciate historic houses furnished with original antiques? Are you in search of a 'home away from home' to spend time and relax with your family and friends, surrounded by lush countryside? Villa Sogara is the place to be!

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Fabulous---a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience that I would love to repeat every year!!”

Villa Sogara is a beautiful and unique property, a bit outside of the city, but that was just fine with us. Nestled among vineyards, olive trees and winding roads, it was a charming escape into the daily life of the Veneto. Tommaso and Ela are the most charming and down-to-earth inn-keepers/new friends one could ask for, and the view they offered into the villa's and their family's history in the area surpasses anything that could be gained from a history book. Combine Renaissance beauty and elegance with country home comfort and up-to-the minute, modern amenities and conveniences---and you have the ingredients for a perfect home-away-from-home. And then there are the cuckoos that call softly from the treetops all day long.....already plotting my return!

Beautiful countryside villa with fantastic owners!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Villa Sogara April 24th to May 1st and loved it. First, securing the reservation with the villa owner Tommaso Peruzzi was easy and he was very responsive to emails. This is important when booking over the Internet and really made me feel comfortable with the rental.

Upon arriving, Tommaso met us at the gate to this gorgeous property and gave us a nice tour of the villa and outdoor space. It's beautiful with views of vineyards and churches dotting the nearby hillsides. The villa itself is beautifully furnished with antiques and had everything we would want for a relaxing stay. There is also a nice pool, but the weather was a bit cool for us to take advantage of it.

Tommaso and his wife are studying to become sommeliers and therefore we had a lot in common right from the beginning because we love wine. He organized a great wine tasting at San Cassiano Winery where we tasted the amazing Valpolicella and Amarone wines. It was a great experience meeting with the winemaker and learning about his techniques and was made more special because Tommaso and Ella and his kids accompanied us. We were treated like family.

We spent a great deal of time outside admiring the views and cooked in every night, with the exception of our final night when Ella cooked for us. She prepared a delicious meal starting with a Zucchini flan, a Spring Pea Risotto, Smoked Ricotta Pasta, and a Beef stew cooked in Valpolicella wine. Dessert was a chocolate cake topped with fresh berries and cream. Of course, Tommaso paired each course with a great wine!

If you have dreamed for a stay in an Italian Villa in the countryside, this is it! We would love to return someday with more family to enjoy this very large villa!

Do you have this idea about spending a week in the Italian countryside? Here's your place.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a memorable week at Villa Sogara in September. The Villa had everything you’d want for a stay in the Italian countryside – charm, character, history, comfort, quiet, and lovely views. There were six of us, three couples, and the Villa offered a perfect balance of space – there were lots of big rooms to gather and hang out together, as well as plenty of privacy when needed.

The owners, Tommaso and Ela, are wonderful. We arranged to have Ela cook us a meal the night we arrived and it was one of the best meals we had during our Italian holiday. Tommaso was generous with advice and knowledge of the area, and he set up a private wine tasting for us at a local winery.

Although the Villa sits in a peaceful country setting, it is close to many great sites. We made easy day trips to Lake Garda, Sirmione, Verona, Vicenza, and Valeggio Sul Mincio (the home of tortellini). But each evening we were happy to be back at the Villa, sharing wine and stories from our day. I wish I was back there right now.

Magnificent villa in wonderful area near Verona.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a splendid week at the Villa Sogara in July. The villa really is very beautiful and extremely comfortable with the usual mod cons and wifi etc. The swimming pool is excellent. This was a wine tasting and buying holiday with my extended family totalling 10 and including three small children. The villa is very safe for children and there is a lift installed for luggage and any infirm guests. Tommaso our excellent host arranged three very varied and high quality tastings in valpolicella, Prosecco and Lambrusco. If you think that Lambrusco is a cheap fizzy red wine then think again, good Lambrusco is a joy.

Tommaso accompanied us on all trips and we also went to wineries close by.

Verona is a great area to holiday in, Verona itself is worth a visit and you can get to Padua and Vicenza very easily. On our way back from the Prosecco tasting we dropped into Venice for the afternoon.

The real stars of the holiday was Tommaso (and his wife), who would float in and out just when we needed him giving invaluable advice on just about everything. He was never intrusive.

You really must visit this wonderful establishment.

A wonderful place to stay

  • 4 of 5

Many thanks to Tommaso and his family who greeted our group of 11 upon arrival. The house is just wonderful...spacious, elegant, well equipped and in beautiful surroundings. The pool is a good size and the pool deck is a great addition. The loggia is perfect for family meals. Very good links to Verona, Lake Garda, Venice, Montova and beyond. A large commercial centre nearby is great for the weekly provisions. Tommaso is extremely helpful with providing any further information you might require. The only reason we did not give this a 5 star review was the mosquito problem we encountered whilst we were there. This is not the owners fault and we were assured by Tommaso that this is not the norm (please also note that none of the other reviewers have mentioned this, so it would appear that we were just unlucky). We would happily recommend this property to any friends or family.

Perfect stay in an ancient manor

  • 5 of 5

The perfect location for a relaxing week in the middle of the vineyards. A beautiful manor with large swimmingpool and covered patio, fully equipped kitchen and laundry room. You are close to Verona and Soave (about 20 minutes drive) and Vicenza (about 40 minutes). Tommaso is the perfect host, whenever you need something, just ask.

Gorgeous Villa in a Gorgeous Location

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 12 had the pleasure of staying at Villa Sogara for a week this June. The villa was spacious and comfortable, and accommodated our families perfectly. It was an amazing experience to stay in a home with so much history, yet every ammenity we could hope for. Tomasso and his wife made us feel so welcome and were always available to assist us, give recommendations, and/or answer questions when needed. We found Villa Sogara to be an ideal location as it afforded us proximity to the various cities (Verona, Venice, Lake Garda..). we wanted to visit, and was a perfect place to unwind and cool off when we were 'at home'! The pool was pristine and provided hours of fun for our children (& the adults too!)

We commissioned Tomasso's wife to cook us and authentic Italian meal on the night that we arrived & it was AMAZING!! Well worth it! We will never forget our experience at Villa Sogara, and hope to return someday!! Thank you again!
