This beautifully restored Historic Log Ranch Headquarters sits on 7 acres and is located 9 miles south of Angel Fire just off the road to Ocate, NM in stunning and pastoral Black Lake. We enjoy unobstructed views across several ponds, wetlands, and extensive (thousands of acres) ranch lands which surround the home. Great for bird watching in the summer and during migrating seasons. Elk herds can be seen almost daily in the fields next to the home and in the front yard, as well as bald eagles, ospreys and many water birds visit our private ponds. It is 14 min. highway drive to the upper parking lot at the Angel Fire Ski Area. Secluded and quiet even though it is just off a well-maintained state highway. This is the area that helps give 'Land of Enchantment' its name. The views across the valleys are stunning. The Black Lake area is where the high country scenes from the movie "Lonesome Dove" were filmed. It is truly a pleasure to experience this historic and special property. All this backing up against massive public lands.

This two bedroom one bath 1400 sq. ft. red fur timber home sleeps 5 with one king bed and one queen. There is also one fold-out queen couch. The large combined kitchen and living room offers a wonderful setting for viewing nature and sharing time with family and friends. A new range and dishwasher have just been installed. With a wood stove and multiple bay windows it's bright and cheery in the day time and warm and cozy at night. The home also has high efficiency central heat.

Our guests have said that they cannot describe how wonderful their experience was while staying with us. This is a unique mountain property offering a truly mountain experience.

About Edward May

Hello, my name is Edward May and I purchased my home in 1991. The house was originally built around 1927. The original ranch that this home was part of was about 67,000 acres. At one time this area was very successful as a potato farming location. I currently live in Hawaii where I design and install tropical landscapes. I do come home to Black Lake a few times a year and anxiously await every visit. I am always happy to return and the beauty of the surrounding mountains surprises me and brings much pleasure still after all these years.

Thank you,

Ed May

Why Edward May chose New Mexico

This property was located in an amazing location. Considering that it was where the large ranch built, we knew there must have been a reason that they built this home where they did. Often, when it is cold and windy, sitting on the deck is still possible because we are so well protected on the west side by a large hill that breaks the wind so it is very calm here when the wind is blowing hard compared to other places just near by. Located next to and on Little Coyote Creek and we also have ponds just in front of the house. We get to enjoy water views as well. Just all around a wonderful location and a fine home built from the massive trees from the ranch. A sawmill was brought to the location to build the home from the old Douglas Fir trees growing on the ranch.

What makes this house unique

Our guests keep telling us that it was a unique experience to stay at our home and thanking me for sharing it with others. It is my pleasure to share this "Jewel" with my guests. It's unique historic quality coupled with an artistic remodel and restoration, makes staying here a truly one-of-a-kind experience. There is simply nothing like it in the valley and there are very few older homes in the area. The timber logs (squared off on three sides) cut from old-growth fir trees has developed a patina over the last 90 years that can not be found anywhere. This is the real deal, an authentic mountain home. All this, coupled with the remodel of the home including the electric, plumbing and heating system, has created a sense of age with modern beauty and style. Our guests, and I myself, can sit for hours gazing out of the windows at the incredible mountain views and viewing the wildlife. Our ponds give a beautiful foreground to the vast mountain vistas. It is just a pleasure to spend time in this special mountain location.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Wow what a beautiful place!

I have never seen so many humming birds! Wondrous views, great friends add up to a GREAT time. Angel Fire, Taos & Santa Fe are all fun places. Everyone should visit The Viet Nam Memorial and Enchanted Circle Pottery.

Thank you for sharing this little slice of “Heaven”!

Perfect Relaxing Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Ed's Ranch Headquarters is the perfect place to get away from it all and also be close enough to anything you may want to do. The Ranch is stocked with anything you need and then some! The wild life kept us very entertained, I could have just looked through the binoculars all day long . . . mule deer, elk, black cap night heron, golden eagles, cinnamon teal ducks just to name a few. If you are looking to get away from the city rat race this is the perfect place to relax and let it all go . . . the hiking in the area is beautiful. Cids organic groceries in Taos kept us nourished for our adventures.

NORTHERN NEW MEXICO AT ITS BEST!

  • 5 of 5

Ed, even after 3 stays at this amazing house, it remains our favorite getaway. Super-clean, well-maintained, the house is very well-appointed and well-stocked with all of the essentials needed for a comfortable stay - Lowe's in Angel Fire is the perfect little grocer for our "at home" food supply. The elk, prairie dogs, birds, rabbits, and coyotes all held our fascination and attention - much more than any tv show or electronic gadget ever could! The star-gazing this time around was an awe-inspiring experience - Carl Sagan's "bilions and billions of stars" are always twinkling over Black Lake. It's a good thing you have a stay limit here, as we know you would have a problem with many others who, like us, would never want to leave! Aloha, and we look forward to our next stay!

Secluded and quite. Short distance to Angel Fire and a little further to Taos but worth the quiet.

Just as described by owner!!

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful log cabin, everything you need. The 1st morning we woke up to 2 elk walking down the hill in the front yard, then looked in the pasture and no kidding there were like 50 more grazing!! Only 10 miles from the ski lifts, easy drive. We definitely will come again!!

Great Stay for Skiing

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent time at this cabin. Very convenient to skiing at Angel Fire, about 20 minutes from out the door to on the slopes. Cabin itself is beautiful, not hard to find but with plenty of space for privacy. Perfectly clean, owner was communicative and helpful. Lots of helpful supplies in the kitchen. Nice and warm, even on cold nights. Would absolutely stay here again.
