Set in fifteen acres, Baubesse nestles in the beautiful Alpilles hills close to Les Baux-de-Provence, an ancient village perched high on a crag, a short drive from St-Rémy-de-Provence. The area is a mecca for ramblers, joggers and cyclists.
The house is surrounded by pine and mulberry trees, cypresses and oaks with wonderful views on all sides. Behind is a fine olive grove and in front, the view stretches over unspoiled countryside to where the Mediterranean can be glimpsed on the horizon. It overlooks the brand new Domaine de Manville golf course. The garden around the secluded swimming pool on one side of La Bergerie, is planted with lavender and rosemary and surrounded by wild mountain landscape. The infinity pool is heated for swimming from April to October. In your deck chair you can see the cliffs of Les Baux, France’s Mount Rushmore, with a reasonable facsimile of George Washington.
Five minutes away by car you can pick up fresh croissant, and local fruit and veg in the village of Maussane. The vibrant village has a prize-winning greengrocer, fishmonger, butchers and bakers, as well as a bank, a post office and hairdressers. The main square is lined with shady plane trees and packed with restaurants, and café terraces to sip a pastis or eat a pizza. A local winery (Mas de la Dame) and an olive oil producer (Castelas) are just moments away.
Les Baux is right in the heart of Provence, ideally positioned for short excursions and day trips. It is a short distance and well worth a visit to see the magnificent ruins of the medieval château and the world-famous Carriere des Lumieres sound and light show. Its beautiful winding walk to the promontory will be hardly felt while you stand transfixed before the charming and tempting boutiques on the way. When Queen Elizabeth came to France she visited Paris---and Les Baux.
A recent addition to Les Baux is the new golf course, and the five star hotel where you can go for an aperitif before heading back to cook your barbecue at Baubesse.
A detached house alongside the main house is sometimes available during the month of August at a slight extra cost.

About Nissim Marshall
I'm a painter. I love this place for the peace...a famous fashion designer has booked twelve years running, for the same reason. No hassle, yet no feeling of isolation. Millions of things to do and to see, when you want to. A unique place in a unique setting.
Nissim Marshall purchased this House in 1966
Why Nissim Marshall chose Maussane-les-Alpilles
Baubesse has thick walls built of bleached local stone, which keep it wonderfully cool. The kitchen has all modern conveniences, including an extra-large refrigerator/freezer, a dishwasher and washing machine, ovens and all essential gadgets, plus a Nespresso machine with a variety of coffee capsules. There are three bedrooms with double beds and their own bathrooms and a small children's room with bunk beds. The living room/dining room is spacious and L-shaped with a large stone fireplace, television and dvd/cd player. There is a piano and lots of books to read. Linen and crockery are supplied, as well as six hours a week cleaning services. Outside is a small courtyard patio where you can eat under a mulberry tree, its branches spreading like a parasol to provide some shade, plus many terraces with awnings, for dining or just looking out at the view. If you arrive at the right time, you might be lucky enough to have your own delicious figs in season. It is truly a paradise for bikers, hikers and runners, as well as those who prefer a lazier lifestyle. The amazing level of privacy you will enjoy in Baubesse can be felt by the absence of any sounds other than those of nature.
What makes this House unique
When people come here, they are struck by the silence and the views, and wherever they've come from, they always say they could never have imagined such a setting. You will have no neighbours here, and you can walk as far as you wish and know it's still your property. There's a short hike in the hills to an ancient abandoned quarry where you'll be delighted to discover French political graffiti from the early 20th century (and some modern, but good-looking) additions.

Property with Soul
This property has soul, and Nissim is the perfect guardian. We have just left and our children (ages 6 and 11) are already asking when we will return. We all immediately felt right at home. Nissim went above and beyond to make sure that we were well taken care of, but also left with enough space and privacy to discover our own Provence. For our first night, he made us a dinner reservation at a wonderful small restaurant in town (Fleur de Thym) and took my husband into town for a quick overview of his favorite shops and restaurants. And on the last day, he came by the house with fresh croissants, a baguette for the road, and a New York Times. That was such a thoughtful gesture, and so welcomed. The kitchen and linen closets were fully stocked and there was not one thing that we wanted that the house didn't have. In fact, there were many family friendly surprises that the home came with that we didn't expect, including a ping pong table, pool toys, boules, and a piano. The beds were all very comfortable, especially those pillows! Note that while you can walk to town (a hearty walk) you will need a car to access anything beyond that. Also, while the weather in the summer is generally hot and dry, the Mistral wind can kick in and really cool things off. We were happy to make a fire and settle in with books. Highlights of our time here included:
- Castle at Les Baux
- Les Carrieres de Lumieres
- Evenings on the square in Maussane
- Hike in Les Alpilles
- Boat ride to Les Calanques in Cassis
- La Course Camarguaise in Arles
- Pool time and the VIEWS from the house!
The only thing that we regret is that we only stayed one week. We look forward to returning. Thank you, thank you Nissim!
August in the Alpilles
We booked the beautiful villa Baubesse near les Baux de Provence for a week's relaxing getaway and the pictures didn't do it justice. The setting is stunning, nestled in the foothills of the Alpilles with a view stretching to the Camargue. The owner Nissim couldn't have been more hospitable! So we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Every day we would walk in the Alpilles on tracks from the villa and relax by the pool in the afternoons. Nearby St Remy is worth a visit and can be reached on foot or by bus. There are lots of good restaurants nearby too but eating while enjoying the view was too good to pass up. All in all it was the highlight of our holiday and one of the nicest villas we have stayed in for some time. We would happily return.
The house is in a stunning location.
Nissim, the owner is a gracious, friendly, and most helpful host.
Our five children loved the pool and the space to roam.
It is a perfect location for exploring Provence.
We wish that we had more time to stay.
It is a very special place.
Third time lucky
We love this place the views and the countryside make this a very special area of outstanding beauty
Beautiful swimming pool and solitude means this place is very special
We have had the best of times here and hope to have many more
Our time at this wonderful house in Les Baux was fantastic. The bedrooms, the fireplace, the morning view from the patio as we ate croissants, the heated pool as the sun dropped over the hill side… all were just beyond belief. It made our time in the South of France the very best of a vacation. Another great part of this house was the genuine ..”right at home” feeling we got as we walked through the door We spent a week here and having a fully stocked kitchen at our disposal was a huge plus.
Nissim, the wonderful gentlemen who owns the house, was friendly, helpful, and gave us fantastic service on several occasions. He helped with directions… gave suggestions on places to dine… and even calling in a restaurant reservation for us. I work in a hotel as a food and beverage manager… and the customer service we received here was beyond perfect !!!
