Abiquiu on the Mesa/ Designer Adobe Deluxe Vacation Home.
Perfectly designed by a local architect, south of Abiquiu this large, airy pueblo style home is filled with desert light, and beautiful vistas from its many windows. Using southwestern elements and handcrafted furnishings the high ceilinged living room has a kiva fireplace, cozy down filled white sofas in an open floor plan with a dining area that seats 10. The gourmet kitchen boasts a Viking Range, Asko DW, concrete counters, and a complete pantry. A few steps up from the living room by mesquite stairs is a quiet den complete with TV and a day bed that sleeps 2. Two ample bedrooms (king and queen beds) have tiled ensuite baths. A large eastern portale facing the mountains is complete with outdoor fireplace. The house sits snugly on 30 + acres and borders the State Land with trails down to the Chama River. There is a separate bathhouse with sauna and serene resting room. Wonderfully landscaped with desert flowers, the home is a peaceful and beautiful retreat.
Indian ruins are within walking distance. Do not forget to hike along the ancient arroyo to the Chama River. Wildlife can be seen from the huge windows, which lend this home passive solar heat. Built on several levels this architectural home has beautiful fenestration which encompasses views from every angle.
Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos.
Not to be missed are Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keeffe had her studio, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Abiquiu Lake, the Piedra Lumbre basin.
Colorful mesas give way to high mountains with Alpine meadows.
From late March through November the Georgia O'Keeffe house in Abiquiu is open for guided tours. Santa Fe and Taos are nearby for day trips. So are Chaco Canyon, Chama, Pagosa Springs, CO, Los Alamos and the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.
You might want to come out when the cottonwood trees are yellow and orange during the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later for the El Rito Studio Tour.
All seasons in Northern New Mexico are sensational.

We often often tell our architect Mike that our favorite place in our home is the oversized eastern facing portale —- when even in the winter we can sit in the sun and sip our coffees gazing out over the black Mesa to the sangre de cristo mountains sometimes covered in snow
We installed a fan over the custom made table so we can enjoy the porch even in the heat of the summer sitting on the beautiful bench made by David our incredible wood worker
And our sauna is a dream of peace and meditation with David’s beautiful benches and chest.
We tried to think of everything to make our home beautiful because we also live in the house and appreciate and are grateful for this home in the Mesa !
Wonderful stay at Medanales. House is absolutely beautiful. Would definitely recommend!

The holidays are especially beautiful in Northern New Mexico. At Christmas the farolitos are lit, the posedas sung and the pueblos dance. At New Years the skies are filled with fireworks and stars
Easter hundreds of pilgrims walk to Chimayo to pray for miracles
It’s a land of celebration and enchantment and in our lovely mesa home we try to honor it all
A wonderfully serene and relaxing getaway in the expansive beauty of the high desert.

Our home is a haven for writers poets photographers and painters and all of them have enjoyed its serenity. We created a sweet little studio in the garage with paint and canvases to give it a try to capture some of the beauty. Good WiFi to download your novel paper pens and notebooks for your poetry. The sunsets alone will turn you into an artist' And if you are lucky enough for a moonrise over the Black Mesa then Mother Nature has smiled on you !!!
I don't know that words exist in the english language to describe how sublime this home is. It was spotless when I arrived and the host was beyond kind and extremly helpful. The property is gorgeous and quite literally breathtaking. I cant wait to visit again! Also, New Mexico is a lovely, kind, and beautiful state. I fell in love. Please visit!

We too love our Mesa home. We have spent years caring for it, and years enjoying it !!!
The view to the east is of the Sangre de Cristo mountains behind the black mesa has given us the most spectacular moon rises — the northern view of ‘snake hill’ is a must climb The western sunsets are in this tenants words ‘sublime’ and the sunny peace of the southern view is energizing.
Yes our home is surrounded by desert beauty. Come and experience it for yourself !
Everything was wonderful from the home, the views, the owner of the home and the people. I would highly recommend this vacation home.

Climate change hit our mesa this year as well--there was more snow than ever before (or at least since we've all been living on this beautiful mesa) It made our perfect kiva fireplace the perfect place to be reading or napping on our white down filled couches. And the mesa covered in snow is spectacular!
but we all long for spring when thanks to the snow little wild flowers appear and the cactus blooms and our trumpet vines and lavender do their fragrant arrival. We love our mesa home in any weather in any time of year. And we love to share it with others!
Very private and peaceful place if you really want to get away from it all.Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Kitchen was stocked with everything you need if you are fond of cooking. Loved that you can go hiking nearby, and bird watching right outside of the kitchen window. Loved this place!

We have watched our grateful birds for a long time. We even got to see the sand hill cranes this year migrating to the Bosque del Apache — the most incredible bird sanctuary in the Southwest —when 20,000 cranes return for the winter. (One of our guests left a beautiful photo of the cranes from the Bosque )
As many of our guests enjoy our birds our views our beautiful peaceful mesa in a home that we have been built with great care and feeling for nature and its wonders of our Mesa
Yes our home on this beautiful Mesa is very quiet —amazingly so. And we have tried to provide a very relaxed atmosphere with three down couches to nap, a serene sauna to ease your mind and body and plenty of pinon scented fresh air to assure you a deep sleep at night . Mother Nature and our clever architect has been very good to us in New Mexico !
This home has a Georgia O'Keefe vibe. Enjoyed all the personal, homey toyches.

Yes we’ve filled our home with items made lovingly by friends and local artists. The bird lady made by our gardener from the desert plants watches over the bedroom with the little horses dancing by the ceramics made by Pueblo peoples— our home is filled with drawings and art work of guests and local artists as well as art work from our old art gallery in Los Angeles which keeps the house cozy yet open to the magnificent Mesa light.
Our architect is also a local friend who understood the beauty of the Mesa and make sure it’s captured in every perfectly placed window
Georgia okeefe is an inspiration certainly to all of us on the Mesa but mostly it’s the incredible light playing on our hand plastered walls creating shadows from the trumpet vines and piñons as the shadows of the birds fly into the brilliant blue skies
Beautiful house and location…
Kitchen was fully appointed, comfy beds, wonderful sauna…can’t wait to return

It is strange that no one has yet mentioned the quiet of our mesa. It is one of my favorite things about being in our home--- the stillness which does indeed touch the soul. We have tried to create a sanctuary both for us and for our guests. Its time to turn off your laptop the tv and just lie on white soft sofas and put your mind at ease.
And if you are hikers there are hikes right outside our doors and more challenging ones further up the road. We have nick named our house Rancho Romantico (for the lovers who have gotten married there and for the lovers who have gotten together there) but perhaps 'a New Mexico paradise' suits it too. We think so as do many of our guests.

We love this part of our glorious country and sharing it with you all. Beautiful in every season and after 17 years in this house still new and astonishing things to see. Come and check it out!
We loved our stay in every way. Amazing, quiet, cozy house with everything. The house was beautiful and owners were so very helpful and accommodating. The perfect vacation in NM. THANKS!!!

They got their share of weather yet found plenty to do with their kids in our house and all around. New Mexico is said to be the sunniest state in the Union and thanks to snow and rain this season it might be the best place in the Union to see desert flowers. But rain or shine our home is ready to enjoy !
We spent a few glorious days at this property, and hope to return in future. Everything was as described: clean, comfortable, very well stocked and the location was perfect to explore the many attractions in the area. The owners communicated clearly and we appreciated their recommendations and suggestions.

These guests were wonderful. They totally took care of our beloved home on the Mesa. I know they appreciated the local art on our walls our well stocked library and our incredible views. It’s been a cold spring but they seemed to have warmed things up with the kiva fireplace — with the well stocked fragrant pinon pine on the portale.
I will welcome them back any time !
Home sat at the end of the road and had state land next to it, providing solitude and privacy. Enjoyed everything about our stay. Will be back

we are indeed very proud of our road---the neighbors turned it from a mud road to a nicely leveled gravel road---we've put rocks at the end by our home to keep four wheelers from wrecking the beautiful state land that provides us with incredible hikes down to the Chama river and the indian ruins.
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Lilyan and Chris’ home. We had much privacy yet the few times we encountered folks on the road they waved and we felt quite welcome. Great location to explore Abiquiu, Santa Fe and the hot springs at Ojo. It was so relaxing, open and spacious, yet cozy, we slept well and completely destressed.

We feel like we are in the center of Northern New Mexico —- gorgeous Georgia O’Keefe land. With beautiful vistas near our home : Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu Lake, Christ in the Desert. And yet close enough to Santa Fe and Taos if you want some city time or some exceptional culture like the Santa Fe opera the O’Keefe museum or the Harwood.
Or you can just stay home, lie on our down filled couches and gaze outside at the beauty of the high desert ?

Wonderful Abiqui Vacation Home
We look forward to each yearly return visit to the Medanales Mesa Retreat - a peaceful and lovely destination. It is an exceptionally well maintained property with a wonderful kiva fireplace (no smoke), open living area, and great kitchen amenities. The owner has recently made nice upgrades also. Never miss an opportunity to enjoy Bode's green chile cheeseburgers nearby!

This lovely couple comes back every year at the same time and they seem to enjoy our home on the mesa more and more. (I actually like to make new additions and upgrades to our home and see if they notice it!) They seem to love the chile cheeseburgers at Bodes but I have now discovered some delicious pinon pine Pancakes at the Abiquiu Inn that run a close second and of course not to forget Angelina's brother's Favio Special. Of course cooking at home on our fabulous Viking Stove and eating on our beautiful portale might finally win the Southwest foodie contest.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. vibe of the house is connected to nature. location allowed us to travel in a new direction daily as there’s much to see and experience . Lilyan is a perfect host. We will be back for sure!!!

Our home is bordering hundreds of acres of a state preserve—with beautiful views and beautiful hikes. But for those who just like to gaze at it all our portal to the east is spectacular at sunrise ( Either from bed or from the outdoor table and bench. ) For the more adventurous Ghost Ranch is not far nor the beauty of Abiquiu Lake. Northern New Mexico is a hiker or viewers delight !

We really enjoyed our time in Medanales! The house is clean and comfortable. The sunrise over the mesa in the morning with a cup of coffee can't be beat. We spent some of our time working and the WiFi worked well. The host is very responsive and the neighbors were even wonderfully helpful when we had car trouble. Highly recommend!

We live in a remarkable neighborhood. Yes the neighbors are friendly, helpful and their dogs are affectionate but most remarkable are the landscapes that surround our artful and cozy home. We’ve tried to think of everything to make your stay comfortable because sometimes we live there as well! Soft down filled couches beautiful hand made quilts local art music tv books a place to paint our and very serene sauna etc etc. as one tenant said ‘God has smiled on us’
Beautiful home with plenty of private acreage and joining enough public land that you can hike to your heart’s desire and even get to the Rio Chama by foot if you wake up early enough. Close enough to Taos, Santa Fe and Los Alamos you’ll not run out of things to do. Great food within 15 minutes any direction and great groceries a little further than that.

Our home sits on more than 25 acres next to hundred of acres of preserved state land
Our huge eastern portale is a great place to watch the sunrises and moon rises over that land with the Black Mesa and the sangre de cristo mountains. And a eat a quiet breakfast in the morning and watch the birds .
Outside of our large sauna the southern facing portale is a perfectly quiet place to suntan or cool off after a sauna which I think is one of the most zen like beautiful saunas that I have ever known —//and we go to lots of saunas !
Our home, which we finished building in 2000, is a fantastic array of light and shadow thanks to the expert fenestration done by our wonderful local architect. We are proud of the work we did to make our home special in every season with a view out of every window
I can’t wait to get back !!
We had an amazing stay! The house is beautifully sited and takes full advantage of the view, sunlight and offers great privacy. Lilyan is a great host, highly communicative and available for any needs. The house is very nicely appointed with great bedding and all the things you need at hand. And the fireplace - amazing. Can’t wait to return.

OH yes to be in front the kiva fireplace--the perfect place to be when napping on our soft sofas with a grand view to the south ---pour a glass of wine while dinner cooks on our Viking stove and play some music to perfectly relax after a nice long sauna or hike on the BLM land across the fence to the East. Im so glad Sarah enjoyed it she was one of many gracious and appreciative guests. She came to happily celebrate her birthday We have nick named our house 'Rancho Romantico' because guests have fallen in love there (to each other and to the mesa) and have even gotten married next to the kiva.
The house, the scenery, and the hospitality are all amazing. The attention to detail in the comfortable, soulful home makes for ease, convenience, and luxury. The views out every window are stunning. The stillness and quiet of the mesa create a sacred feel. Lilyan is a terrific host! I can't say enough good things about this property.

That bit of 'soulfulness' I well understand---there is such peace and tranquility on the mesa---or maybe its the cottonwoods going golden on the Chama in the fall or the Sangres des Christos mountains turning blood red on the snow in the winter or knowing that Native American publeo tribes lived on the land in the 11th Century ? the many reasons the land is enchanted and soulful. We've taken every effort to make this magic possible to share with as many folks as possible. We too love our mesa home and I know its many pleasures by those, like Candyce on her 60th birthday, appreciate its stark beauty in all the seasons and all the creature comforts we added to our home love the years.
About the host
Hosted by Lilyan Sievernich
We are independent feature film producers and have traveled the world making movies with the likes of Wim Wenders, John Huston, John Schlesinger. In our many travels we have never found a place as special as Northern New Mexico and we have fun sharing it with many visitors from around the world. It is especially exciting to painters and photographers. It has such an incredible light no wonder Hollywood is coming to Northern New Mexico in the last few years!
Why they chose this property
We bought our piece of paradise from our old friend and neighbor in 1998 and she convinced us to build a house with a local architect and builder. 'a casita' The process was wonderful if at times perplexing because the local artisans never quite understood what we were talking about! We ended up with a wonderfully eclectic and delightful mix of styles of the southwest. A house filled with light and spirit!
What makes this property unique
This property borders thousands of acres of state land and though it is rural and wonderful it is not remote. Our wonderful local architect Mike carefully picked out the best views from the window and angled the house perfectly to the sun. We had so much fun building it, picking the tiles and fixtures and inviting the local craftsmen to make our furniture and doors and plaster the walls and make our home unique, filled with light and yet cozy.
