Martinez Casita - Adobe on the Plaza

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-4)

In the spring of 2010 Martinez Casita opened also for short term rentals. Conveniently located next to Barranca Plaza Casita, a favorite of many Ghost Ranch visitors for the last 7 years!

Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is this very charming one bedroom, one bath vacation home.

The thick adobe walls have built-in banco's in the living area. Throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.

A large garden with fruit trees surrounds the casita.

In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. Badlands with goblin-like formations are nearby. The Chama River, along which are cattle ranches, is great for fishing.

The casita is just minutes from Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive from the Piedra Lumbre basin. Ghost Ranch is worth many visits and don't forget to drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike or visit the Benedictine Monastery. The Chama River Wilderness is paradise for explorers.

The acequia, the traditional Hispanic community water system, is still held in high regard in Barranca. The mayordomo decides who irrigates when. The casita’s garden can be irrigated on Saturdays.

Great day trips can be made to Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, Taos en Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chama (with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Bandelier National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Valle Grande, etc. etc.

Family gatherings and reunions:

Both Martinez Casita and Barranca Plaza Casita offer full privacy. Yet since the casitas are sitting together on one end of Barranca Plaza, they form an ideal gathering place for groups of eight family members or old school friends. BBQ facilities are provided and there are great shadowy spots to linger under the trees. Special rates are available when both casitas are rented.

Comfy accommodations in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a really enjoyable stay at this Abiqui casita. The Martinez family is most welcoming and the casita is very pleasant, well maintained, and right in the midst of some amazing hiking. We loved being so close to Phantom Ranch, Abiqui Lake and other outdoor recreation areas, and to see Georgia O'Keeffe's home was a real treat. At the end of each day, we returned home and watched the sun going down from our screened porch - and we appreciated the opportunity to pick tomatoes and peppers from the Martinez garden to accompany salad at dinner. Thank you for a delightful long weekend. We look forward to returning and continuing to explore the area.

Beautiful fall color and cozy comfort

  • 5 of 5

I took my daughter to celebrate her 50th birthday in our favorite place to stay in northern New Mexico, the Martinez Casita near Abiquiu. She was amazed at the beauty of the area; looking down from the casita over the Chama Valley with the cottonwoods in their fall golds was a special treat. The Martinez family are the best hosts you could want; we had a warm house when we arrived and firewood for the wood stove for the cool nights. The casita is very comfortable, with a very well equipped kitchen so that we could prepare the goodies we picked up in Santa Fe at the Farmers' Market. We hate to leave every time we visit. It's a special place.

Great place with beautiful vistas

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to stay at this property and the casita continues to relax and restore us. So nice to get away from the Texas summer heat and enjoy the cool evenings and mornings watching the sun set and rise over the Chama River Valley. The Martinez family were very kind and extremely knowledgeable of the area and we hope to return in the near future.

Comfortable, quiet casita with beautiful view over the hills.

  • 5 of 5

We just had our second visit with the Martinez family in their wonderful casitas. We stayed in the A side this time, and as much as we loved the B side on our first visit, I think we enjoyed this visit even more. The small screened porch at the front was such a nice spot for watching the rain over the hills and eating all our meals. The layout and furnishings make you feel right at home, and the ample kitchen is great when you are preparing meals. There is also a grill on the patio. We slept very well in the comfortable bed, with the window open to the cool night air. I love the peace and quiet of this place; we enjoy listening to the birds who congregate in the huge trees near the river. Either of the casitas provides us a quiet and comfortable place to stay with excellent access to many different types of activities. My husband loves the photographic opportunities in the neighborhood; there are mountainous areas just to the north; and when we want to go in to Santa Fe for a festival, it is only about a 40 minute drive to downtown. This a lovely part of New Mexico, and there is so much to see. The casitas give you a comfortable and cozy spot from which to explore all of central and northeastern New Mexico. I hope we will be able to visit soon in cooler weather to enjoy the fireplaces in the living room and bedroom; the sunroom just off the back patio is a bonus. It looks like a perfect spot for winter bird watching when the weather is too cold for the front porch, and it lets in lovely light from the east and south. The Martinez family are very helpful and do everything possible to make your stay comfortable. These two places are real gems, and we hope to be able to visit them often.

A Sweet Home

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely time at this quiet casita. Ninfa was super helpful with everything we needed. Our dogs liked it too. We had to watch them every second to make sure they stayed out of the gardens but they eventually understood. We'll happily come back the next time we're in the area. Thanks!
