Overview

About the property

9 Bedrooms, 3 Full Bathrooms, 3 half Bathrooms, Sleeps 25

The place to go to get away from it all....Situated in the renowned Methow Valley (foothills of the North Cascade Mountains), this private retreat is nestled in a secluded basin all its own, at the end of the road. The property's 160 acres is surrounded by thousands of acres of National Forest wildlands, with the nearest private property over a mile away. There is great hiking and skiing right from the door, and a wood-fired sauna to cleanse and rejuvenate you. The Lodge features a rustic, wood interior with a handsome rock fireplace. The cathedral ceiling and skylights in the 800 square foot living room provide an inspiring atmosphere for rest and renewal. There is ample space for family and friends, but it's also cozy enough for a quiet romantic getaway. The newly-constructed Bermhouse has hand-finished artisan interiors. It's a perfect place for family reunions, weddings, or a quiet break from the rest of the world! To guarantee privacy, we only rent to one group at a time.

Winter fun!: in the winter we have about 10km of professionally groomed ski trails winding through the property, with several slopes to choose from for back-county skiing, snowboarding or sledding. For the most part, the only people in this valley are our guests, so there's a good chance you'll get some freshy snow!

Spring, summer and fall: Spring, summer and fall have their own attractions -such as a blanket of wildflowers covering the land, or the joy of swimming in cool, clear mountain waters. There are a variety of hikes right from the door of the lodge, taking in views of the Methow Valley, old-growth ponderosa pine trees and snow capped peaks. Our favorite is a loop hike that takes about an hour, and circumnavigates the valley with views of the Sawtooth Range. You can also hike to the top of Lookout Mountain, with 360 degree views of both Sawtooths and North Cascade Ranges - takes about a half a day. Or sit by the seasonal creek, flowing down from Lookout Mountain into a pristine pool. There is fishing nearby, wildlife to watch, or just hang out in blissful peace and quiet!

There are modern media-amenities - TV, DVD player, wifi access, but we also have some good old-fashioned games, great to bring family and friends together.

Notes:: This property is solar powered! It operates just like normal for the most part, except that we can't handle crock pots, and we have non-electric means of making coffee, with thermoses to keep it warm through the day. We strive to be environmentally-friendly, by recycling and composting food waste, and ask our guests to do the same!

Caretakers live on the property, around the corner from the main house. They are well-practiced at being invisible, and their objective is that you have a very quiet and peaceful stay!

About Lindsey

I have always been a very nature-oriented person, I have degrees in both Geology and Geography. I travelled for many years, interested in experiencing lots of different landscapes.

Lindsey purchased this house in 1999

Why Lindsey chose Washington State

I lived in Seattle for numerous years and did lots of retreats in various places nearby. While the retreats were beautiful in their own way, they always felt somewhat suburban, with neighbors fairly close by. I was looking for somewhere where people could really feel they had left the world behind.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Three sisters, one sister-in-law and one lone husband spent five glorious

days at Skalitude. Wide open spaces, blue skies, fresh snow and superb

lodging made for a better trip than we could hope for!

Rush hour at Skalitude = x-county skiier, four deer, two dogs, a bald eagle

and a wild turkey.

Thank you for being such wonderful hosts and entrusting your little piece of

utopia to us! (our dogs thank you too!) Your hospitality and stewardship has

made this a truly unique and memorable trip.

Car: necessary

Our guests appreciate the silence this property has to offer. They

say that although many places say they offer seclusion, this is the only place that really delivers. We have also been told that the photos don't really capture the place, it usually exceeds peoples' expectations!

For small groups, you do get the whole place to yourself although we may not have all of the beds made up.

Other Activities: My favorite way to spend the day here is to wake up lazily, maybe read for a while, watch the birds and squirrels, have a yummy meal then go for an interesting hike for a couple of hours in the surrounding hills, checking out the mountain views and old-growth trees. Come back to a cleansing sauna and some wine with dinner, then maybe a movie on the TV or a game with friends. Simple, relaxing, enjoyable!

Ski: Right out the door are about 7 miles of private, corduroy-groomed ski trails, plus numerous slopes for backcountry skiing or boarding. The Loup Loup Downhill ski area is about 25 minutes away, with 1200 vertical feet of family-friendly runs, i think a daily pass is still less than $50! There are also great nordic trails up at the Loup, you just need a Sno-Park sticker to ski there, one of the best deals around. Further north in Winthrop are the famous MVSTA trails, more expensive but always excellent grooming.

It's a perfect place for a picturesque wedding, or a fun-filled family reunion. We now have wireless internet, so you can stay connected in the middle of nowhere! Quality Assurance: this is a full-time vacation rental house, professionally run since 2003.

Funky place for family reunion.

  • 4 of 5

Family gathered here from all over the country for a wedding. The living room is spacious and ideal for getting our whole crew together. Grounds are great for walks and alone time. Owner checked in with us and was helpful, and flexible with arrangements. The pricing, however, was not clear. More people came and we paid an extra $75 per person per night. Needs to be clear up front! Squeezed 11 around the table. Not sure how 25 could fit. (If there were leafs, we didn't find them.) The six berm house bedrooms are separated by curtains in groups of 2, giving 3 private units. Baths in the berm house=composting toilet. Nice, eco-friendly set-up, but again, could be clearer up front. Private bedrooms and bath in main house. Still, a fun place to stay that served our family well.

Owner's Response: HI Jean! thanks for your review, but I think your math is off. If you had paid $75 per person per night for the extra people, the total just for that would have been $1050 ($75x7x2), but you only paid $1300 total - which was $220 for the first four people for three nights ($660), plus $25/person for an extra 7 people for two of the nights ($350), plus tax ($100), cleaning ($75), service fee ($65, goes to homeaway) and late checkout ($50). There are loads of extra tables and chairs for when we have larger groups, they are all on the back porch. But no, you can't fit them all at one table! I will review our listing, I know somewhere it is mentioned that we have composting toilets, most people don't have an issue with them. Thanks again for your visit, best wishes for your family!

A wonderful place to escape to -- beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

This is our ninth visit to Skalitude. We love this place. Our family gathers here every year to find time to just be together. We share meals, play games, swim in the nearby lake, and share the beauty of the surrounding 160 acres. It is a very special place. We love the rustic nature of the lodge where we can all easily hang out together or apart. We love the berm house where some of us sleep in the silence of all that is around us. And we love that we are alone, but if we need anything, Lindsey and Will are nearby and ready to help us with whatever we need. I hate to say how wonderful this place is because I don't want to lose access to it, but... it is a very special off the grid place that is comfortable to stay in and wonderful to escape to.

Beautiful location but privacy not as advertised

  • 1 of 5

Based on the detailed property description and the web site, we thought we would be the only people renting the property during our stay. (From the property web site: "We only host one group at a time, to minimize disturbance or interference from other humans. This maintains the deep sense of peace and silence that is held here, and allows people to connect more profoundly with the energy of the land.") To be sure, we also confirmed this via e-mail before we booked. But during our stay, we discovered that a group of campers was on the property doing a "vision quest" while we were there. They actually arrived at the same time we did, making it difficult for the owner/caretaker to give us a proper welcome and introduction. We expected a secluded, private retreat (as advertised*) and instead we had to work around campers and walkers. We communicated our concerns to the property owner both during and after our stay. We do not feel our concerns were adequately addressed and she is no longer responding to our e-mails. In addition, the owner assured us via e-mail that the property is dog-friendly. (From the property website: "Dogs are welcome! They help connect us to the natural world.") We were told we could pay for our (multiple) dogs upon arrival. When we asked about the campers on the property, she started to take issue with our dogs rather than address the double booking of the property. It's a stunningly gorgeous place and has the potential to be really relaxing, but we did not have that experience. We specifically chose this property so that we could get away from it all for a few days and we were really disappointed.

Owner's Response: We have been in this business for over 10 years, and probably average close to 1000 guests per year. Ms Brothers was the most unhappy and uncommunicative guest we have ever had. She did not tell us she was coming with seven un-socialized and unfriendly dogs, and was then angry that her needs and expectations were not met. Most dog owners tell us in advance the number of dogs and their temperaments to make sure there isn't a problem. We do rent the lodging facility of nine bedrooms to only one group at a time. We learned at the beginning of our rental experience ten years ago not to tell people that they won't see anyone else during their stay, because even though the lodging is rented exclusively, it's a big property and we sometimes have helpers and workers here to help maintain it. For spiritual and meditative retreats we make a point of limiting other activities. On occasion we let non-profit educational groups camp on the property, usually in the woods at the north end, a half-mile, ten to fifteen minute walk away from the lodging. If we had known Ms Brothers was bringing seven dogs we could have managed things differently.

Fabulous place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend at Skalitude were delighted to find ourselves in such a nice place. The lodge is quiet, spacious, and comfortable, and the property is in a beautiful setting, with forest, open meadows, and nice vistas all around. It was late spring so lots of flowers were in bloom, and there were many birds to watch. As there are no other residences nearby, the property is also quiet, secluded, and peaceful. Lindsey is attentive and helpful, but also circumspect so that guests feel they have as much privacy as they'd like. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would happily plan another vacation there the next time we visit the Methow Valley area.
